The great merit that the sutra speaks of repeatedly that can be gained from memorizing, propagating, etc. the sutra itself is most likely motivated by the desire to preserve the actual teaching of the sutra (which is clearly about transcendence) in an era before mass publication was possible. In that connection it is commonly believed that The Diamond Sutra was the first book to be printed in the history of the world (albeit by wood block printing).

Has the translation been finished and published? I don't see it listed as a publication currently for sale by either Stanford at the link provided, or at Amazon. It's 2021 November now, I'm curious about that version, as I've read Red Pine's and a couple others, and with something that old, the use of any term in the text that can be more clearly matched to it's original meaning, would be very interesting.

I definitely agree with the issues of some translations of the diamond sutra. I have one copy in on my shelf that is almost impossible to extrapolate any meaning at all. That being said you have to be a highly trained, highly educated priest to translate sutras from one language to another. Even though some translations are poor if one knows what one is doing the meaning of the diamond sutra is pretty clear.

Because of Paul I lived with an old Tibetan Abbot for 12 years [in New Zealand]. Paul is very able in many Asian languages & philosophies I want to teach my daughter [1/2 Mongolian] about her own culture. There are archaic dictionaries of Tibetan, Sanskrit, Mongolian….are there modern ones? With English & Russian? Will I have to put it together myself?

Dharmas and Sutras will be understood according to each persons innate wisdom and mind stream. Wisdom and knowledge are two "very" different things. A non-meditative mind will never be able to give the full meaning or nuances for this most sacred text. You already seem to be approaching this sacred sutra with the utmost arrogance. I hope I am wrong. My advice is for individuals to find an good Buddhist master to understand this sutra.

carolyn S That is very well said. I am watching on a monk called Venerable Guan Cheng on You tube expounding the Diamond Sutra. He is explaining in English but his source may be from the Chinese one.I do not know whether your knowledge on the Diamond Sutra is based on other sources or from the Chinese source.I guess , if u are knowledgeable in Diamond Sutra and if you don't mind, can u check out whether there is any discrepancies in the translation from your understanding to that of Venerable Guan Cheng's one.

The ego wants things to make sense and be logical. This sutra along with the heart sutra smashes logic and intellectual understanding. There is nothing quite like it. It IS transformational but not if you don't practice the dharma. There is nothing like practice. Intellectual pursuits mean nothing to spiritual progress.

That Seen In The Diamond There is that known to mind Not born of mind. Rather brought to mind, Having been known In a realm apart from space and time. That known in an unbounded paradigm, Which is no paradigm, And from an eternal perspective, Which is no perspective, When brought to mind, Thus limited by space and time, By perspective and paradigm, Casts but a shadow Of the dimensionless thing which is no thing, Of more dimensions than mind can conceive. The enlightened mind illuminates the shadow, Exposing and uncasting as illusory The diversions and paradoxes lurking within, Revealing the essence of that known in a higher realm. Yet word is contrived by unenlightened mind, Limited by the illusion of duality, Fettered by linear thought. Inapt to define that not thus confined. Hence when that unbound, by word is bound, Resurrected are the diversions and paradoxes Beheld in the shadow. Illusion created by illusion. Confoundingly real to the mind That does not know itself illusory. Thus, that the Bhagavan, the Sugata, The Tathagata, the Arhan, Limited by word, impart his knowing; He tells then untells. He speaks then unspeaks. He declares then undeclares That seen in the shadow. That the impartee put it to mind, Thence discern the essence.

A common mistake in the old translation, is the lack of specification regarding the word "Dharma".They do not make clear in the different Chapters when "Dharma" means "Law" or "Phenomena".
@ShakuShingan
@ShakuShingan 7 жыл бұрын
Harrison translates the former meaning as "teaching" rather than retaining the Sanskrit, and just uses the Sanskrit for phenomena. My own practice is to capitalize the word when it means teaching and keep it uncapitalized when it means phenomena. However, it should be kept in mind that the ambiguity is ALSO present in the Sanskrit text. So, I would be of the opinion that ambiguities that are present in the original text should also be represented in English. If we are trying to cover those up we are in the business of interpreting rather than translating.
@Flaytt744
@Flaytt744 7 жыл бұрын
thanks for your reply.your claim of ambiguity of terms , i have a problem with....in my 30+ years of practice when i heard the title of the lotus sutra - sad dharma pundarika..i immediately knew (as a novice in my early days) that it meant "the wonderful law"..now,, within the lotus sutra the word dharma appears often e.g. chapter 14..burton watson translated this passage "Look upon all phenomena as having no existence, like empty space, as without firmness or hardness, not born, not emerging, not moving, and regressing, constantly abiding in a single form".. by understanding the passages before, or after the word "Dharma" is mentioned ,it is easy to decipher in what context it is being used.
@ShakuShingan
@ShakuShingan 7 жыл бұрын
Satch Flight That is certainly true. For saddharma, I would translate True Dharma. Watson translates from Chinese, they use the term miao for sat, which can mean both wonderful and true. using Sanskrit you can see that True is the better term here.
