I tried this and found it to be lacking firepower. After an initial waive of missiles, it felt really weak. Also the reinforcements is great in theory, but the other side just waddle it down to an injured sentinel and then moved on. He knew not to wipe it out and left it like a wounded dog

I will say screening and board control felt amazing as I was everywhere...but world eaters got into the sentinels and by round 3 it was pretty much over

The problem I had was that my oponent cut down the sentinel squadrons to 1 model. Then moved in a way so that he could kill 2 of them and left that for last and just started deleting infantery squads. If i reinforce the infantery he killed the sentinels. If I didn't I lost my infantery. It was realy frustrating since the sentinels need to see their targets so I didn't realy have a way hide them from the return fire when he positioned himself to shoot infantery on objectives and the sentinels if he could. One sentinel with a lascannon realy feels useless most of the times. Managed to only reinforce 2 units the entire game because if that mindgame situation I playd myself into.

You can always charge a lone sentinel into something. Then it will either get killed, or if it survives the enemy unit is now locked in combat with a freaking sentinel, and your opponent will have a difficult choice to make on their next turn.

@@shlinn Agreed, mordian makes a good point about orders as those were easier to get, but 2 lascannon shots hitting on 3s felt way less impacrful than an eradicator hitting on 4s which is now only a 10 point difference

I think that having Ursula Creed on her own inside a Chimera makes her very vulnerable. The opponent can focus fire on her Chimera and then take her out with ease. Leading a unit of CSI adds an extra layer of protection that may keep her around to grant orders for an extra turn.

I mean its 10 Guardsman they literally could not protect her from Lasguns. In fact due to the blast rules they could even be a bit of a liability. If your opponent is chewing through 12 x T9 wounds just to kill a 55 point character then they have committed a lot to it (maybe too much) and you should have an advantage elsewhere.

The same exact hole exists in the second list, the moment you go against a guard player or someone with indirect, Solar just dies turn 1.

Mordian - Thanks for your advice on a beginners list 1000 point - went 3-0 at a local GW event, finishing first with that list - three tanks and three infant blobs. Keep the great videos coming.

Thinking more on it, I found lumping my artillery on top of Lord Solar to be a vulnerability. Granted, I did this because I was new and didn't understand the master vox. So I parked him and his squad between my two Basilisk. What this did was create a space in my back field for my opponent to deep strike/ reserve move into. IDK how many 3" deep strikes there are now, maybe its irrelevant. I'm thinking its better to include the squad/command squad just to space out the backfield.

i started playing 40k round about 2007 playing Blood Angels, i will never forget my first time playing against Imperial Guard (5th Edition)! My opponen played 13 Chimeras with Veteran Sqauds with Heavy Weapons. The Firepower was so massivly overpowered i couldnt do a thing against, couple of years later i play Guard myself and really Enjoy it.

I do something like this in theme, but with death korps and crassus transports. You dont get a scout move even if you really want to because the crassus isnt a dedicated transcript, but you can fit what one objectives worth of tomfoolery into it. I put a 20 man blob of kreig with a marshall (considering instead a platoon command squad, but you can fit both) plus 3 bullgryn. The bullgryns job is to screen, or lock down anything thats too threatening. The crasus gets them there without blowing up with its fat pile of 18 wounds. You can also use lord solar to order the crassus to move, move, move on turn 1 and then advance it giving you a minimum of 14" of movement which is enough to, if not get on the objective, reasonably threaten it the following turn. I have considerably less scout sentinels, I like to take them in squads of 1 as my primary targets for reinforcements, because otherwise opponents will deliberately leave them alive and crippled. It is also an obtuse form of defense, as any weapon with multiple attack may only be allocated to single sentinel even if it overkills it.

I think its worth testing sentinels in squads of 2 as a variation on CanCanCan. You avoid "below half starting strength" triggers compared to solo and triple, at the cost of 1 less can per reinf of a triple.

I run a similar list, though not x6 chimeras. I’m having fun and competing okay as a brand new player. I’ve had multiple opponents say that a recon list also floods the board with targets and if they don’t choose wisely and focus fire, it’s easy to secure objectives and score points.

I think this idea is brilliant. It reminds me of a US Cav Scout unit. Thought I think this kind of list would benefit from some sort of gunship or ground attack fighter to give this list some CAS. Maybe dropping an armored fist platoon or two to fit this in. I know you'd be losing out on OC, but you're still getting some heavy firepower to back it up. I also think a Couple Tauorus's would be great to fit the theme of this list

I’m actually workshoping a list with a similar set of ideas for an RTT on the 11th. Unfortunately I only own 2 Chimeras and 5 Sentinels so I can’t go as ‘all in’ as I’d like to. Instead I’m considering one or even two 5 man Rough Rider squads as well as two 5 man Scion Squads and a Scion Command Squad with Grand Strategist. Both the Rough Riders and Scions are very tasty at 60 and 50 points per 5 respectively.

I am playing Sentinel heavy armies since begining of 10th edition and Its good. They are tough enough against normal infantry weapons, to many in Numbers for heavy hitters and they benefit from Tank commanders and officers. For the mechanized Part, i am using Crassus instead of chimeras.

Yeah, I tried what was basically list #2 a few months back and it did well enough. The only issue I had with it was that the Basilisks are only damage 2, but having three of them being ordered and scouted for made up for it. I had fewer orders from fewer officers so I could squeeze in a squad of storm troopers (scions) for deep strike onto far flung objectives, but it is a solid list that works.

i wish this would work out, it would be THE armageddon steel legion list, but i think sentinels arent efficient enough in killing stuff. vanquisher cost less and are better in every way than a squad of sentinel, and we dont need to talk about the good russes. well, russes need the massively overcosted tank orders, or do they? i wouldnt cut the russes, just run them without orders was my idea. the difference between tank commanders and a regular russ isnt big enough to squeeze something viable in. so each tank commander can decide on russ or manticore to give his order. so i tinkered around alot, but the mech guard list is quite tight, thats why turnament lists only take as many infantry and transports as absolutely required or beneficial. with maxing out on mech squads we are maxing out on controle, we win of points with that strategy. to support this we dont have that much options. we need to be efficient there to get anything out. mine is two tank commanders, two russes and two manticore combined. a minimum amount of firepower is required, therefor not much space for utility is left. sentinels are good in general, but most efficient as single scout sentinels, and we need efficiency. running officers mostly to make sentinels better drops efficiency even more, sentinels are still better run as single model units, and the most annoying as. 6 sentinel units are better than 4, the extra models in the units dont do much difference. but, sentinels in this configuration fill mostly the same role as the mech squads, and to be honest, we only want them in, to have something to order by the officers, we really want to see in this list. we just dont like tank comanders, we want 9th tank aces and commanders back, or regular officers which are pretty nice in 10th. these tank commanders dont feel good sadly. i find that sentinels compare best with infantry squads, but infantry is better in what infantry does than sentinels, well sentinels can do infantry tasks if needed, but they arent good enough in their main purpose. we dont get anything of maxing on sentinels, especially on maxing both sentinels and mech squads. i still cant see sentinels doing leman russ and other firepower stuff. just look at the vanquisher, hes more efficient in bringing some heavy weapons on a tanky body, but even he isnt cheap enough to see play, because a 145pts unit is still not a great screener and objective holder in guard armies and the firepower doesnt qualify. the same for sentinels, they arent bad, but just not good enough.

Swap the armoured sentinels for a demolisher tank commander and you get self ordering anti vehicle fire + some adequate strength 7 fire from the side plasma cannons. Then, you have leftover points for swapping some catachans into krieg and get some plasma guns. Tank commander with grand strategist and demolisher cannon Creed Straken 3x catachans in chimera 2x krieg in chimera 1x cadians in chimera 2x3 scout sentinels 2x Basilisk 5 scions

Tried it, my opponent was smart and would always leave one sentinel alive meaning I couldn’t refresh the unit. One sentinel does jack crap

I do really like this idea you have presented. Having straken and creed is very important to get enough orders to the sentinel units. The first list i would certainly do but with my own changes. have just 2 units of scout sentinels and then 2 units of armored. The twin linked is very important to get through armor. Additionally i would consider half the troops to be infantry or cadians. For one you already have 5 other scouting units. Another bonus is that a few melta and plasma could do you some good for additional firepower here and there. There would be enough points left over for a cyclops as well.

We could use Salamander scout and command vehicles to return to make armored recon Guard. Maybe a new light-medium tank hunter model. Up-armored Chimera chassis with a heavy lascanon, HK missile, etc that can do a shoot and scoot type attack. That would be cool.

Had a similar idea for a list. I just swapped 2 squads Chimera infantry for 2 squads of Scout Sentinels. Use either double Dorn with a tank commander or 4 Leman Russ 3 with Battle Cannons and 1 Exterminator.

Recon Guard is a great idea and I'm glad its getting thrown around. This list type would work but it would have a different game plan than typical guard. You lack firepower from tanks and what not but you make up for it in speed and quantity. It would only work as a hyper pressure list where 2/3 squads of sentinels and 3/4 Chimeras are charging the opponent turn 1 and locking them up in combat/deployment zone. While small tactical units take mid field objectives and maybe somewhere in there you design a fixed secondary?? Like the custodes game he mentioned. Sly Marbo would be perfect for deploy teleport homer. People are mentioning how sentinel reinforcements gets micro'd around now, but if you're in combat with a single sentinel you could desperate breakout and destroy your own model essentially and proc reinforcements. Ursula Creed alone in a transport and Lord Solo are the exact problem with the first list, instead of two Leman Russ hulls now you're orders are protected by a chimera hull and LoS blocking terrain. Put yourself in the shoes of someone facing this list, you'd know exactly where to target and how to disable the list. That's where I think sacrificing some firepower for defensive capabilities for your command structure is worth looking into. I know its crazy talk but I would do something like an Ursula Command blob: Creed, 20 Infantry, Platoon command Squad, Ogryn Body Guard, Regimental Attaches, Grand Strategist. Babysitting a trio of Mortars, FoBs, Medusas, etc. In Cover + Take cover + Go to Ground + FNP = +3/++6/+++6 Protects you against counter battery, Ogryn protects against precision, and Astro path protects against deeps trike.

I'M new to warhammer tabletop, only played 1 game of armageddon, now I want to build my army. just bought my patrol, want to make an army of 1 shadowsword and 2 lemon russ vanquisher as anti ultra heavy armor platoon to take out enemy heavy hitters early, with another platoon with 2 lemon russ or sg where I can do blitzing

Here’s something I thought of. Sentinels + Scions + Scoutmeras. I put Creed into a classic command blob with an infantry squad and command squad. I think she is too vulnerable advancing in a chimera. That’s still 3 regiment orders to 24” with the master vox. Creed Command Squad 175 6 x Scoutmeras 750 3 x 3 Scout Sentinels 540 3 x Scion giga blobs 510 1 Cyclops 25 2000 on the nose

I'm building up a "slight" variation on your list#1, opting for the "pseudo-indirect" fire you mentioned when talking about the assassins. I replace the 2x basilisks with : Gaunts Ghosts Callidus assassin Vindicare Assassin Sly Marbo Sargeant Harker ("Payback" from the back of a Chimera looks great) 1995 points of whackamole shenanigans.

If the crassus had more weapon options I’d advocate for it’s use but with it’s lacking weapon options and poor tactical flexibility I don’t know if it can keep up with long range tough targets like knights or custodians

Mordian, have you considered putting Bullgryn in some of the Chimeras to give the list some melee follow up to physically take back objectives that get overrun? If you are finding 1 or 2 of your chimeras generally aren't taking advantage of the catachan scout move, a 3 man Bullgryn in chimera instead or simply a 6 man Bullgryn unit might be worth considering.

I know this totally goes counter to the point of the video, but this is the kind of moment where I just wish GW would let the Vanquisher be good, again. Imagine if a Vanquisher Tank Commander could hang back,actually using the long range of the Vanquisher Cannon, but also doling out orders to some artillery pieces out of sight? Sure, it takes the cheapest Leman Russ, and bumps it up to the most expensive (Commander), and that's before Grand Strategist, but the thing I always hate most about the Demolisher, even when they make it the best option, is that damn short range. I know they want engagement, and just like many people don't like indirect fire because they can't easily engage the source of it, they might not like the Vanquisher being too far away, and still popping tanks, but I wish this worked. I also wish "Tank Commander" was an upgrade, like Grand Strategist is, so "lesser" Russes could still be good picks, as leaders, but that will probably have to wait till the new codex, two years from now, and still probably won't happen. I think this idea sounds fine. My only hiccup is, if you will, the continued focus on artillery, which we have reason to think GW will continue to repeatedly knee cap. Sure, we can't know what they'll do in the future, so we might as well play in the moment, with what is currently competitive, but if the Basilisk, and Manticore, continue to get shortchanged into mediocrity, until Guard finally get another Detachment, that doesn't just overly favor stationary artillery, it seems odd to keep squeezing them in, knowing it won't keep working, and then having to TOTALLY change the list, once you remove them, and the plethora of tank orders they need. As one who isn't really a fan of current Tank Commanders, I do like the Sentinels, and the fact that infantry Officers can order them, since Creed, Straken, their Comm Squads, a Castellan, or a Marshall, will probably already be there, if not Leontus.

I've been playing a mechanized recon force for years. Chimeras, Hellhounds/Devildogs, and a tank commander or two. What it needs to be playable, is for Chimdons to make a comeback to replace the tanks. And add Gryphons, Sentinels, and a Hydra to support the infantry. Then, this type of army list is viable. The trick would be getting GW to bring back the full range of Chimera varients. I can also see a place for the Command Vehicle and Scout versions as well. Give them the scout and forward observer capabilites of the Sentinel and replace the Sentinels. The whole force would be based on the Chimera hull and thus square with the Guard lore for unit types. It wouldn't cost GW anything, as they already have the vehicle molds.

I love recon guard, however you just lack firepower after your initial alpha strike, though I will keep playing them just because they're fun and being my army is based around Urban combat, Sentinels as walking heavy weapons platforms followed up by APC's where MBT's can't go is way it works. Though I also bring a Valkyrie for fun as well.

The big con to this style of list is the cost, in dollars. Sentinel spam is expensive.

I spammed sentinels back when they were cheaper. Nowadays I don't think the sentinels cut the mustard. Scout sentinels are fantastic for recon, and they aren't bad units to use reinforcements on... but getting the timing right on keeping that OC for when they're going down is hard. The real issue though is that paying 60 points for a lascannon and a missile just isn't enough bang-for-buck to field them in bulk. They screen alright, but they're not strong enough to spam. Armored sentinels are pretty average durability for their points, which is to say it's not anything special, and again their firepower is seriously lacking. tldr, take scouts as individuals to recon, not as blobs to shoot with. Don't take armored sentinels at all if you can help it.

Speaking of whacky lists, I thought of one that I do want to use at some point. It's not gud, but I love the idea of it. 2000 pts Characters: 2 tank commanders, both demolisher cannons, with a las cannon and 2 multi-meltas in the hull, the orders won't really be too useful for this list but they do give it a little bit of flexibility if I need a tad more dakka or movement - 410 pts total Battleline and dedi-transport: 2 catachan jungle bois in chimeras, not a lot but the idea is, depending on when I feel the OC is needed, either move out and block or sit back a turn and let the expendable vehicles die first - 250 pts total Infantry: 1x10 man scion squad, main role is to drop down, nuke something, then die 2x5 man scions, to do objectives and a little bit of tomfoolery - 200 pts total Vehicles - 1x2 armour sentinel squad, plasma cannons as they re-roll wound rolls which negates the plasma's low strength vs other vehicles and I want the higher AP while not making them take one shot las cannons. The idea is to lure something valuable out and die every round as I can bring them back. If they don't bring something out to deal with them, I charge them in there so they have to deal with them 1 scout sentinel, las cannon. Would have more as they're better than the armoured variant but I wanted at least one squad of 2 armoured sentinels and I ran out of points 3 hellhounds with inferno cannon and heavy flamer, this is for their rule to completely nullify cover, as the vast majority of the list's firepower is autocannons at ap-1 which gets fucked by cover 3 hydras, they may be AA vehicles, but at 85 points, a very durable body for the cost and 4 anti-fly 2+, twin-linked autocannon shots, in my eyes they're a no brainer as even though flying units aren't common, a lot of units have the fly keyword for some reason so these spike in power VS then. 2 leman russ exterminators, main reason for them is for their ability to give other units +1 AP, meaning that, as long as stuff goes well, I'll be able to have two high value enemy units where I ignore cover on them and I'm lighting them up with a fuck load of AP-2 autocannons that re-roll their wound roll - 1140 pts total At the end of this, I have 15 vehicles, the majority being around toughness 9 and 10, 11 wounds and either 2+ or 3+ armour saves with the main firepower being a fuck load of autocannons which, although they aren't that great at actually getting wounds through, they'll be getting help from the ignore covers and +1 APs. Shit, but overall it's silly and I love it

I'm fine with these lists, but I urge people to attach Solar to a squad of Rough Riders and lead them on a charge across the board, its the most fun I've had playing 10th ed. FIX BAYONETS!

I hit on a similar idea after I mentioned the Bullgryn during the Nigel stream. Grew out of wanting more Bullgryn. Tough to do when I'm combining this with double dorn. My concept is a bit different, using Manticore instead of Basilisk. I'll post it up in stream tonight. Chimera ordering sentinels was the central theme, however.

Reporting for Duty Sir o7 As an Infantry / Artillery type commander that's wysiwyg I like that 2nd list a lot I would use the "regular guards men" to get a Hy Wpn squad to shoot out the top of Chimera rather than Catachen flamers 1st list ❓ I am surprised you don't have mortar pits to help screen out basilisk's with extra points { I won't spend $55 for Daddy's 300 lb princess Ursula }

@@SteelStorm33 I didn't like Creed for same reason . 300+lbs of lard .. The group / area is a little strict on wysiwyg in RTS play .. Fun games ? nobody cares Female Space Marines Male Sister of Silence Male Sisters of Battle Most have gotten our wives g/f'd into the hobby .. Pin up / hyper sexual female IG leaders & troops ( I'm guilty of this ) Sex changes in the Lore has set the group off , especially the ladies . Them being told they are not want in the hobby because of disagreement with Games Workshop lore changes I got a 3D printer because of it . I am learning to make models rather than buy GW anything

These are terrible lists lmao. Simply binning the armoured sentinels and one squad of scout sentinels can get you two tank commanders adding some much needed lethality to the army

If you are playing it repeatedly someone could Game against it. I build all my factions to enable all combinations of play based on game perimeters and opponents. I’m older started playing in 1st edition and am tired of keeping up with the chaotic random detrimental changes for profit that is GW I quit playing in 9th. I now just slay my grey play a modified one page rules game. Been a bit, but I love this strategy in thought. Need a play by play battle report to watch on it.
