I am Ugandan who lives in the UK. .. I have loved this interview so much. About languages... many of us can't speak most languages in Uganda. The few words you have spoken are in Luganda and you have done so well. There are Baganda who have never left Uganda who cant even say the few words you tried. You are both so well spoken.

The dressing is modest. What you saw is a new breed of young people who are influenced by social media. But when you move to rural areas, it is a more modest way of life.

At times, some fools come online to speak any how. If you say, some Nigerians. Does it means in Uganda, no one does scam. When you talk of America, do you refer them, to murderers, and an invaders. My brother, was defrauded in your country, he did not label, your country men, as fraudsters. If someone defraud, please call the persons by name. Any body could defraud, you and claim to be a Nigerian. I knew of a Ghanaian, who claimed to be a Nigerian, until we unmask him.

Actually Uganda is not a swahili speaking country dear...we do English and our local languages...esp Luganda
@apolokaggwa6521
@apolokaggwa6521 9 ай бұрын
Welcome to Uganda. I think you will never be disappointed. Uganda is not a Swahili-speaking country at all, as is Kenya and Tanzania our neighbours. It has been rejected in Uganda for over 100 years! Hence, it will never be the national language, as is the case across our borders. You are right that Luganda, the indigenous language of the Baganda, who are the majority ethnic group of Uganda, has organically become the lingua franca of the country. It is the language of commerce and entertainment, which is spoken by an estimated 75% to 80% of the population of the country. Therefore, the regime in power has conceded to the inevitable, by elevating Luganda to national status, allowing it to be taught in our schools and universities. English will remain the official language for some time to come, but now so will Luganda, most likely replacing the former eventually. Of course, you are right again, that "the other tribes" who disagreed with you when you said the obvious, resent the new status the Luganda language has achieved, since their indigenous languages will never be as popular.

Uganda will inevitably adopt Swahili language to catch up with the expanded East African Community countries as well as the African Union policy. Because Swahili is the official language of BOTH the EAC and the AU. The Baganda nationalists who rejected the Swahili language at the time of independence have been thoroughly defeated politically over the last 50 years. Their separatism political agenda collapsed a long time ago. For Uganda 🇺🇬 to communicate and be economically competitive in the East African Community, Swahili is the ONLY way to go. Luganda language will continue to play an important role locally, especially in commerce, but only within our borders. The future ultimately belongs to Swahili not Luganda.
@apolokaggwa6521
@apolokaggwa6521 7 ай бұрын
According to your surname, you are from western Uganda, even though I am not certain whether you are a Munyankole, Munyoro, Mukiga or a Mutooro. It is not surprising to me that you hate the Baganda and the Luganda language. The "Luganda language will continue to play an important role locally, especially in commerce," entertainment, education and so on, I may add. I wonder why it is not the case with the indigenous languages from the rest of Uganda, including yours in western Uganda? The answer is that they don't have a chance against Luganda. You get on social media as many others have done before, to propagate your lies that "Swahili is the official language of BOTH the EAC and AU," and that "Uganda will inevitably adopt Swahili to catch up with the expanded East African Community countries as well as the African Union policy." I wonder who you have been talking to. Uganda does not have to "catch up with" anyone in this world linguistically. We have a rich diversity of more than 40 indigenous languages in the country, with Luganda in the lead. For your information, a language can only be popular if the people speaking it decide that it should. That is why to your chagrin, Luganda has organically become the lingua franca of Uganda, with 75% to 80% speakers throughout the country. There is not a chance that your indigenous western Uganda language will ever achieve the same status. Moreover, the regime in power has been forced to concede to the inevitable, by allowing the Luganda language to be taught in all our schools and universities. Do you think that Swahili will ever be as popular? All indications are that Luganda will be elevated further by becoming one of the official languages of Uganda in addition to English. I can even go further by predicting that it will eventually replace English as the only official language of Uganda. The words Uganda, Buganda, Baganda and Luganda are here to stay, whether you like it or not. Swahili does not have a chance, simply because it is too late. It was rejected as you have pointed out more than 100 years ago, and so, hardly anyone speaks the language in Uganda up until today.@@gerrytushh

I think you are overestimating the reach of Luganda. Go to Arua , Gulu, Lira , Karamoja, Teso, Tororo and you will find that Swahili is the default business language. . Swahili is the official language of the Uganda military so how can you say Swahili isn’t big in Uganda?
