Too much ego is the hardest thing for a team to overcome. They should have learned from the Reds and especially Joey V. He left his ego at the door and humbled himself for the team. They all have on that team and it’s why they are crushing it.

The problem with both the Mets and padres is that talent and big names don’t exactly always solve your problems - they can in fact have the opposite effect and worsen your team with the expectations, the talent, and the ego operating around. At least the Mets are on a 5 game win streak and coming into San Diego with a lot of momentum. There’s still a half season left to play but time is running out.

Funniest thing about this padres team as a dodgers fan is how many years I’ve heard from padre fans about how the dodgers buy all their talent. Obviously the dodgers are a big market team and have a lot of money to keep players around long term but a good amount of their players are either guys they drafted or signed to minor league deals and developed in their system. While the padres have signed or traded for literally every single good player on their roster aside from tatis and cronenworth. Padres payroll is actually higher than dodgers this year and the dodgers have still been significantly better despite all the injuries they’ve had

As a White Sox fan, I can sympathize with the pain of going through a failed rebuild.

The problem with the Padres is that the roster think they are bound to win but don't actually make a real effort to do it. The clash of their egos made the roster a comomete disaster and they can't admit they aren't winning yet.

The padres are like the angels, they have to learn they can’t win because of star players. They’re most successful player (on the field) was brought up through the minor league system. That’s why teams like the orioles are so good now. The orioles have done a very successful rebuild.

The fact that Manny is trying to stabilize the clubhouse shows maturity. Hope they can fix things.

For reference: 2019 Washington Nationals at the All-Star Break: 47-42 - World Series Champions 2021 Atlanta Braves at the All-Star Break: 44-45 - World Series Champions 2022: Philadelphia Phillies at the All-Star Break: 49-43 - Won NL Pennant With San Diego currently at 42-47 leading into the All-Star break, they are right in that same realm so I would keep faith. The core of that lineup is undeniably talented and although they have underperformed up to this point, I wouldn't doubt it for a second if they found a way to claw themselves into a playoff spot.

It's always been the "mental", I would add that "player ego" makes failure mentally worse with every loss, the new season was too over hyped and the Pads were no longer the "underdogs" now they were expected to perform, all which added once again to the "mental" . 100% agree that it seems they were always being selfish trying to get bombs instead of getting the base hits needed to play team baseball.

I think the deal signing X was a mistake. Too much money locked up for too long. The friars had Manny, HSK, and Cronenworth - and probably should have added a really solid/star 1B and would have been much better, IMO.

At the 4:00 mark, you cite Machado's signing of his $300M contract in Feb 2019 as the largest contract in American sports. I'm certain this is incorrect. Stanton's $325M contract with Miami in 2014 supercedes Machado by $25M, and was signed approximately five (5) years earlier.

As a long-suffering Padre fan (while I got here in ‘91 when they were actually good for a couple years… And rejoiced during the really good mid 90s years, it’s been mostly VERY DARK DAYS since!)… we spent Decades hearing that will never succeed, because no owner will ever spend the money necessary to get that one or two good players/dominant lights out pitcher that would put us over the top… weird that they kept going cheap in hiring managers (which is how that 2021 team ended up with JAYCE TINGLER.. no big shock he had had absolutely no managerial experience before this and was such a disappointment he likely never will again)…. We finally assembled a team we could stand proud rooting for again (like we did back in that ancient Glorious 1998 year!) and..:they have proceeded to crap all over themselves! Folks, we have been swept… At home… By 2 Last Place … teams!! we did not sweep a single series this season until last week! I can’t come to any other conclusion, other than San Diego as a city is cursed when it comes to sports teams! More so than Cleveland… OK may be the equal of Cleveland… We both lost our football team. At least they got one back, but they’re stuck with the second version of the Browns.

I am still optimistic, as a former resident , of San Diego, in North Park, near the Mormon Church. I attended San Diego state, and greatly enjoyed the last of the orange groves in Mission Valley. I threw in a share of a box seat in the stadium for fried chicken and other catered foods during the Padres games. I am still connected to the team’s nostalgia

Reminds me of the 2011 Red Sox, spent 300 million in 2010 offseason just to win one game better than the previous season and finished 3rd. That team was loaded but under preformed.

The problem with this Padres team is the same problem the 2022 Dominican World Classic team had: way too many stars. They all were too important to take a walk, bunt or simply try to hit a sacrifice fly.

I think next year they'll be scary. Similar to how the ranger big adds didn't pan out last year but this year they are killing it.

Do one on the Mariners. They're at a point where they gotta right the ship, or ship out prospects that haven't worked out.

It's impossible to know for sure if the Pads will bounce back... As has been true all year, they have incredible talent and, on paper, are a championship-caliber team... but they just can't get the W's... I don't know why. There are plenty of great moments and wonderful plays and clutch hits - the team is a joy to watch... but baseball being a game of breaks, sometimes a key break or two goes against you, and it will cost you a game. Or in the Padres case, a large number of them. It's frustrating to see a team this good unable to win. The Braves are unstoppable for a fraction of the payroll... *shrug* I'll keep being a fan and hoping for the best, but at this point, there's not much I can recommend that far-smarter people than myself have already explored.

While I really enjoy the energy and confidence oozing out of those DR players and how they enjoy themselves in games, there are also many times when you just don't quite see them giving their all for the team. Many of them had big egos and at times when you need players to grind and fight they just don't seem to do that, some of the swings looked terrible like they didn't even care

Giving Manning Machado an extension on his contract was a really dumb move, considering you still had him locked up for the next 6-years.

Props to Bob Melvin for behaving professional, as he chooses to go work for the Padres enemy (the Giants) this next season, rather than stay and manage the Padres under his current contract. That says a lot about Padres disfunction. Is this the start of a Bruce Bochy repeat storyline?…As manager Bruce Bochy left the Padres to then go on to win 3 World Series with the Giants. Melvin proves Preller’s press conference two weeks ago, where Preller sought to con the listener (spouting Padres unity and cohesiveness) was nothing more than Preller’s echo chamber of regurgitated talking points! It’s a no brainer for the Giants to hire Melvin. Melvin brings keen baseball savvy and also a desire to stick it to Preller for micromanaging him. Melvin brings the Giants the bonus of all the Padres’ nuanced trade secrets/inner workings. Similar to when the Tampa Bay Bucs’ hired John Gruden, bringing with him insider knowledge of how to beat the Raiders in that very next SB, Gruden having just left as Raiders’ head coaching job the season prior. Expect the Padres to be more of the same next year, as Preller is a pro at hiring ineffective managers, cultivating bizarre rosters, speaking endless empty press conferences, and charging the fans high prices for ugly team performance. The Padres big window for a WS win was this just completed failed season, and the Tatis absent National League championship series against the Phillies the season prior. The Padres “elite hitters” spent much of this season sliding down their enormously bloated piles of money (like the Joker). Instead of hitting in clutch moments this season, the Padres “elite hitters” were so pedestrian that the team didn’t win an extra inning game till after game 150. Juan Soto turned on the after burners (of stat stacking) the last two weeks of the season when the team was already eliminated and playing the MLB’s worst competition. Thus guaranteeing Scott Boras will demand half the pink slip of Petco Park to keep Soto as a Padre. Manny Machado paused from hitting into double plays in critical situations just long enough to get his “feel good” 30 homers. Tatis’s season can be summed up in that he robbed one homer and then danced like a teenager after their first beer. Preller should be having Tatis watch career montage videos on Tony Gwynn, Derek Jeter, and Ichiro to see what leadership looks like. Instead Tatis is best known as the steroid third base skipidy-do-da guy. The Padres should have appreciated/cashed in on the high level of pitching the got this past season from bottom of the rotation Wacha and Lugo. At least 3-5 of their top pitchers are going to be gone next season (Snell, Hader, etc.). The Padres aren’t worth the price of admission for real baseball fans. Padres attendance is half for the party atmosphere of the Gas Lamp downtown scene and half bandwagon interest in the team. No thanks…

I kinda hate the notion that the padres had a "fail rebuild" cause even if you just look at 2019-2022 they made the playoffs twice and won 3 playoff series. Like thats alot more than alot of teams can say in that same time span. Like yeah they aren't doing that well RN but after the win today they look real good going into the all star break

I am a big Braves fan. We are good. There’s no disputing it. However, for some reason, I don’t want my team playing the Padres in the post season. They are still extremely talented. I don’t think they will rebound this year, but look out if they do. The NL West is still up for grabs.

really frustrating seeing how good this team can be but just underperforming. been a pads fan my whole life so i’m used to disappointment but this is unparalleled. it’s one thing to flat out suck but to have the talent there and just not play to your potential is exhausting to watch. the fan in me is saying they’ll turn it around in the 2nd half but i would be genuinely surprised if we make the postseason. really hope this is a wake up call for them and 2024 will be a full 180° difference

The reason why Padres is being Madres is simple. Nobody wants to play for San Diego. They’re there for money like Correa is in Minnesota for two years. Uniform, franchise - I mean there is just nothing at all baseball about San Diego Padres. I would take money to play there but honestly would feel lack of motivation. Juan Soto never wanted to be there. He’s eager to go elsewhere after this season.

This team is following the same path as the team that had Kimbrel, Kemp, and the Upton's. That blew up causing Bud Black to lose his job.

Melvin is a great manager. You can see the team starting to turn the corner a little bit. If not this year I think the team will mesh by next year to have an amazing season.

As an O's fan who seen Machado play everyday I was bummed to see such a great talent be developed and then sign elsewhere but was happy to see the ego of his go.

It’s frustrating for us Nats fans to see most of our star power being traded away 😢, like Soto of the Padres and Scherzer to the Mets. Seeing how bad the Padres and the Mets are doing, only reinforces the idea that they should have stayed in Washington as their performance for their new clubs has been terrible and second the reality is that they could have if stayed turned Washington into one of the next premier teams in the League up there with the likes of the Washington Capitals in the NHL 🏒 with Backstrom, Wilson and Ovie. They had to go chasing after money 💵 and now look at you.

The good thing about this debacle is it's very easy to understand. The offense is 100% to blame. Pitching and defense has been great (minus the last 2 weeks for the bullpen). The stars need to be stars and the other needs to fill their roles. Haven't done that yet.

Yea thier team culture is just off to me and has been for 3 years. Too cocky. Too assumptive. The Memphis Grizzlies of baseball kind of. Cant prove it but theres just something about this "hey lets have like 7 number 3 hitters in our lineup" thing just doesnt work well. It never really allows each star player to all reach their potential. Something about taking a guy who is a cleanup hitter and making them hit 2nd or 6th subconcsciohsly over time morphs them into that and they dont produce like a number 4 hitter anymore they just turn into a glorified role player.

They've got a 48-40 pythagorean and have had health issues. They've only won like 20% of 1-run games. Peripherals suggest this is mostly bad luck and they'll be alright.

Big thing to take note of is that two franchises doing major reworks at the time (Phillies and Padres) both ran into the same issue with their rebuilds, that being that the 2016-2017 drafts were just blech at the high end of the the first round. This really almost destroyed the Phillies plan to contend until they basically said “screw it” and just threw money at the problem until they made the playoffs.

You failed to mention the two best pitchers getting hurt at the end of 2020. I believe that spurred some moves that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Again, 2021 had pitching injuries. Leaving that out doesn’t make any sense.

The manager has needs to have a Mike Singletary type press conference. You know "Cannot play with them! Cannot win with them! Cannot coach with them! Can't do it! I want WINNERS! I want people that WANT to win!" I mean I would rip my players a new one in press conference for this.

To have a true world series run you need 2-3 WAR seasons from role players, bottom line. Every team has between 2 and 5 stars like the Padres but that is still only ~60% of your at bats going to your best players. Every WS team of the past decade got there on top of overperforming role players.
