"Uncle Fun Guy" says your more of an upstanding man than most! The week will cast judgement on you, but remember they can't walk the same mile that you can. You did right by the bird, as unfortunate as it was, thankfully you were there to freely give the compassion that the bird deserved.

Respect brother, owls are my favorite animal, i respect your compassion for wildlife. That was not weekness, that was humanity. Screw the trolls.

Farmers have more interaction, appreciation, and love for nature than people realize. You have a compassionate heart.

That sucks bud... Last fall I took my ATV out to ride the fence rows, check on all the property lines on the fences. About halfway through I came across an owl that looked just like that one there. He was perched on a branch and I rode right up to him and he didn't spook or fly away. It was late in the evening so I stopped shut the four wheeler off and took a couple pictures of him with my phone. He still didn't fly away, so I got off and got a little bit closer and took a couple more pictures. He still didn't fly away, so I walked right up to him to make sure he was OK, put my hand out and he poked my hand a little bit.. from there, I start scratching the back of his head and he turns his head towards me like to let me scratch his head from a better position. Haha I stood there and scratched that little guys head for like 15 minutes. He seemed totally fine on the branch. I actually went back later that evening to make sure he was OK and he was gone. Just a friendly owl guess.. I had never seen anything like it. I've got a bunch of cool pictures from that

There is nothing wrong with caring about the animals on this planet. Although it was unfortunate, it did blend in with the ground very well. I had tears in my eyes and felt your pain. It was very strange for it to be out in the field at that time of day. I thought it was awesome of you to hold it until it passed. When you first thought it was a hawk, i figured there was something wrong with it to sit there. I feel even more so with it being an owl and being out then. It was an accident, and you showed pure emotion over it.

I feel your pain. I’ve had many similar experiences with wildlife while farming that completely take the wind out of your sails for the day. They can give you your best days watching them or your worst days when something goes wrong like yours today.

Ethan, I feel your pain, I ran a fawn through my haybine some years ago and I had the same reaction, you spoke on your last video of farmers being stewards of the land, this is a prime example of that

My kids hunted and i never could. The older i get the more i love wild animals. I grew up with no deer, fox, turkeys, and coyote. Nice to see so many return. I really felt your pain man. Fricking tears.

Small farmers rock i work for a large corporation farm and believe me there is a very different attitude towards everything

That’s a true farmer right there. Compassionate about animals especially the more rare ones. Unfortunately some people wouldn’t care at all. I remember one time I was doing tillage and I hit a big turtle probably 12 inches in diameter and I felt really bad but nothing I could do.

Great plains have ridging issues, at least in our area. We use a McFarland 5114 incite which is 14' and we pull it behind our 4630 Deere. I pull it bout 6 mph and i do it in fall on the corn stubble and it works great.

Probably no consolation, but I suspect the owl was sick and on it's way out anyhow. For it to be out in the field in broad daylight and not flying away at the sound of the tractor, there was definitely something wrong. Still doesn't soothe the hurt. Used to mow a lot of road ways, and one in a while would take out a killdeer nest. Made me feel sick every time. Real men aren't afraid to show their feelings.

That's true compassion there man. I can't say the amount of times I've been made sick when I was cutting hay and found a rabbit or a fawn that I didn't see in the tall grass. Reduced my self to tears many times because I didn't set out to hurt any animals, and they didn't do anything to deserve being hurt. As big of a pest as they are, I even hate it when it happens with squirrels too. They're funny little creatures to watch sometimes, and I hate to see them hurt.

That owl was on the ground for a reason well never know. It should have taken off. It's not like the Oliver could sneak up on anything. You are a true stewart of the land and animals. Your the guy borrowing the land for the next generation to use. Thanks for caring sir.

Sorry about the owl incident. Your reaction is totally understandable. While it was never an owl, I've accidently killed a number of unfortunate animals over the years, mostly mowing tall hay. I've hit fawns, snakes, groundhogs, and turkeys. Once I hit 2 turkeys in the same round in opposite ends of a hayfield. Never a good thing. Once I hit a turkey hen who was sitting on a nest of eggs. The hen was killed and all but 2 of the eggs were broken. I took the 2 remaining eggs immediately to my Uncle's house. He had an incubator and was able to incubate those 2 eggs and 2 wild turkeys hatched and lived. It was the best we could do. Unintentional accidents happen.

We have a turbomax we pull behind an MX200. Great for prepping cornstalk ground, really busts up the stalks and works that top layer of soil. Pretty expensive though, but I think it's been worth it.

I have a Summers super coulter with no angle and 8 wave blades, and a Landol “vt” disc. Each has there own use on my farm. The Landol is great for second pass on corn stalks, the summers is “ok” on bean residue. The problem I have with no blade angle in minimum till on the summers goes back to the chopper on the combine. I can tell you right where my Deere 9600 ran, versus the much, much better chopper of my Deere 9660 rotor. Half the time I run the supercoulter, I have the harrow pinned up so it doesn’t try and bunch up soy residue.

My brother just got a Great Plains turbo till and loves it does a great good at sizing up cotton and corn trash for strip tilling into he found a used one on tractor house

I totally felt the same way for that beautiful Owl. In most cases animals are better than most people.

You are a great man and I would have been very much the same. I used to get off the tractor and move bird nests I found in the fields. You need to think maybe it was sick or something being out like that and you helped it move on in life. God Bless you.

It speaks volumes of your character and how you handled that it’s not your fault just an accident, but stellar character is admirable. Where I grew up, we used to have a very, very strong pheasant population, and one summer while my father was cutting alfalfa. He accidentally ran over hen He was able to get everything stopped in order to miss the nest on the ground. I remember my parents trying to do everything they could to make sure those eggs would make it, but they didn’t. That’s the life of a farmer they care about animals, even if they’re not raising them, they love nature they don’t wanna harm it they want to preserve it that’s what people need to understand about farmers, but sadly don’t.

I thank we all are having the year you are having so far at least I know I have so far and I know how it is to get something by mistake. I’ve gat a fone a year or so back bush hog and gat some baby possum and some baby rabbits this spring mowing hay hope to never get another but it’s gust a part of life it all depends on what he has planned

We have a variety of tillage systems in my area. No till, strip till, vt and conventional. I no till beans and come back in the fall with a landoll vt shallow and plant corn into in the spring. That system usually works great. I agree landoll is not true vt but did not buy for vt purposes. I love all the adjustability on it. I have not done deep tillage in yrs. Its tough hurting our friendly critters. I cant count how many pheasants or deer i hit cutting hay. Take care

Always traumatic when something like that happens Farm Boy. Found an owl a couple years ago at a gate to one field . To late to do anything for it. Something beat me to it.

Most likely that bird was injured or sick and could not fly. I have seen owls many times sitting on tree limbs, roosting, deep in the woods during the daytime. The one and only time I have ever encounter an owl sitting on the ground during the daytime it had a broken wing and could not fly.

There was more going on, the owel was in trouble before the accident. Death had claimed it, it was not your fault. Your a good farmer.

Your reaction is very understandable. Shows compassion. Running the merger after the mowere every now and again youd find a fawn still alive that went through the discbine with its legs cut clean off. Poor things. I hated it. I hit a fawn with the speed till last year, it bothered me for a while. It sucks but it happens but it dosnt change the fact that it sucks. I dont understand farmers that have zero compassion for wildlife. One farmer around here used to hit kittens in the head with a wrench and toss them in the manure speeader. Id be in prison if i ever witnessed it myself.

That owl is a juvenile, probably could not fly was the reason it was in the field. Jumped out of nest and couldn't return. Bad deal.

I completely understand the way you feel. As many deer as we have here in Maryland almost every time I cut hay one year I ran a fawn over or threw the haybine. I would sit and ask myself why and get all messed up. I even ran a phasant over one time. It's part of life they tell me but I know it's hard on your mine.

I would have reacted the same way as you. Like others have said, I have to believe the owl was either sick or injured or it would have flew off or most likely not have been there in the middle of the day.

You're good with me I used to lease some ground that had a big turtle roaming around somebody painted it's shell we would stop and move it out of the way during tillage and planting and my sprayer guy would stop and eat lunch to let it pass through

I"ve smoked a few burrowing owls with header reels. Never a good feeling.

I have done the same thing with a fawn. Took off his front legs with the discbine. Had tears flowing when I put it down to save it the misery. People that haven’t had similar happen don’t understand the heartache that comes with that.

It seems in SW Michigan have limited days of sunshine and I'm trying to get 9 acres of soybeans in. My manure spreader broke spreading free composted horse manure last week and now trying to fix another I bought a month ago. Sucks about the owl I know the feeling. Last year I ran over a fawn with my 404 international loader in a friend's hayfield I felt so bad but there was nothing I can do. Sh*t happens.

Well, it's a shitty thing to see an owl bite the dust but I suspect there's more going on than you realize. It's a strange thing to see an owl out in broad daylight in the middle of a field no less & I have a hunch it was there for quite sometime before you noticed it. May have been ill or suffered a crash landing in the wee hours of the morning whilst hunting, or both. My dad nailed one one time with the old 76 Ford coming home from work. When he drove in our laneway it looked as if someone had mounted it perfectly dead center of the grill wings spread out. The circle of life can seem cruel sometimes.

Some large Ka-Boom! to scare off wildlife might help. They live in the same land as us and take their chances. It happens to such a beautiful creature.

Totally not your fault. A neighbor ran over a fawn with a disc mower. It was a shocking mess. Nothing he could have done either.

Damn that really sucks and is horrible and I would’ve reacted the same way. I’m a big-time animal lover and it kills me anytime. I run over anything and as far as the farming I agree it’s getting to be too much like a business and it’s so sad seeing it go that way.
