I'll be devoting quite a bit of time talking about the latest issues surrounding Flash star Ezra Miller. There's a lot to unpack, and much of it is pretty unpleasant. But one thing I won't be doing is misgendering them, and I want to make it clear why before I even get to that video.

Two quick notes: 1) This was a precursor to a full video now out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otGjpN2l2dDGdJs.html. I address the pronoun issue here so I didn’t have to do it in the full video and everyone would be on the same page. It doesn’t mean I care more about pronouns than allegations. For context, I spent 1 minute here on pronouns and I’m about to spend about 40 minutes on the rest of it. 2) Yes, Miller has said in the past they accept all pronouns. HOWEVER in more recent statements and interviews they’ve made it clear that is no longer the case.

I'm LGBT myself and I've seen Ezra do nothing for the community but use it as a get out of jail free card. As far as I'm concerned they may as well pick a gender because after the shit they've been doing over the last few months, I don't feel like they deserve the luxury of specialty pronouns that have existed publicly less than 10 years. My partner is Trans, and I'm gay, and this behavior is unacceptable and I will not share a community with that monster. SOME gender better accept this bitch because I know I won't. Stop giving everyone a free pass just because they participated in the capital letter club with us. It's not fair to the rest of us in the community who never hurt anyone. You wanna talk about damage? Here's damage. By accepting them in spite of all the problems, we now look as bad AS Ezra. I've already been told this to my face and it's embarrassing. There's misgendering, then there's excommunication. As far as I'M concerned, Ezra is excommunicated.

@@annoyingmish if you actually watch the video, it explains how misgendering Ezra opens the door to misgendering other trans people for basically any reason, which is not only inherently transphobic but can also be dangerous to a minority group that is already being treated like shit by a great portion of society. Pronouns are very relevant for this reason. Because now transphobes think they have an excuse to dismiss someone's identity that they don't agree with. This is not more important than the girl Ezra has abducted (which is why it's a short and not the entire 40 minute video) but it's still a very real issue that affects the transgender community as a whole.

I don’t think it’s about how Ezra feels at all, I think it’s the principle that someone can decide based on their own opinions whether or not to respect someone’s pronouns. It’s not about him it’s about the trans/non-binary community in general. There shouldn’t be certain guidelines a trans person or non-binary person has to pass in order for their identity to be respected. Like this person said, it’s opening a door for people to disrespect others pronouns even if they did nothing wrong. Idgaf about how Ezra feels about this or people misgendering them, it’s about protecting the trans/non-binary community as a whole.

@CouncilofGeeks
@CouncilofGeeks Жыл бұрын
Gendering cannot be a matter of respect, because respect is earned, revoke-able, and deeply subjective. You may decide to misgender them for their actions and feel justified, but that sends the signal to others that they can revoke their respect at any time as long as they feel justified. And given how many people already hate trans folks of all kinds, allowing for "I'll misgender you if I don't respect you" does nothing but hurt the trans community as a whole. I get the frustration. I have no respect for Miller (and am actively annoyed by them being both probably the most famous non-binary person in the world and a resident in my state), nor do I have even an ounce of respect for Caitlyn Jenner. But I don't need to misgender either of them to display that. It's like saying it's ok to be misogynistic to a woman you don't like, or racist to a person of color you don't respect. And it's not. It's just not ok.

Considering that Ezra uses their non-binary status as somewhat of a shield to accuse anyone of hate-criming them whenever they do something terrible. For instance, when they were getting kicked out of a woman's home for their actions, and then Ezra started calling her a transphobe. It really doesn't feel like Ezra feels sincere about their identity, but more interested in what comes with it. I can't speak for them, but I dont believe they should be some kind of example for non-binary people. I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow Ezra says they identify as non-human. Which they came close to doing when they said, "I barely identify as human." I'll respect their pronouns, but I personally believe Ezra is just using non-binary status for their own self-interest and not true sincerity.

I won't even argue against that position. Honestly with all the complexities behind pronouns now. I just wanna put it out there that if anyone wants to enlighten others on the subject, all power to them. But don’t get offended if I or anyone initially uses a pronoun that offends you upon first interactions bc you don’t identify with it. Like if I say “sup bro” but then you’re like “not bro and screw you”. That’s kinda messed up, instead just let others know politely after and move on with it. Literally no need for a whole fit, it’s not that deep.

No one here is doing that. That's not the issue we are talking about. The issue is intentionally misgendering someone for potentially any reason you want. Your comment is just showing that you don't want to respect anyone's identity or be held accountable when you get it wrong, which says more about you. Showing basic respect to a minority group that is literally murdered and beaten nearly every day absolutely is "that deep". I, and many older people like me, have a difficult time referring to a singular person in the plural. In my ear and in my mind it breaks the English language and often brings more confusion to communication than it fixes. I can understand the concept of someone not wanting to be referred to as "he" or "she", but that calls for the creation of a new distinct word to be defined, not the reusing of another extremely common word that already has a defined meaning. Just listening to people talk about what's going on in a case where there are two people and each of them is being referred to as "they", so the person listening (me) can't tell the difference when the person speaking is referring to a singular person or the group of two people because there's no distinction in how each is being addressed makes understanding parts of it near impossible.
@CouncilofGeeks
@CouncilofGeeks 2 жыл бұрын
I do understand that. And there are attempts to make use of a new(ish) gender neutral singular or noun. The most common being xi/xir or zi/zir. The problem is when you need a term to gain mass acceptance you can’t really force it, language evolution and slow and not easily controllable. And as an annoying bonus neo-pronouns tend to cause even greater levels of targeting and ridicule for those who use them.
@someoneoncesaid6978
@someoneoncesaid6978 2 жыл бұрын
@@CouncilofGeeks - I'd much rather use one of those terms to refer to an individual. I think much of the mass media would also. Unless their being purposeful asshats, most at least _try_ to get it right and be respectful. But, even when trying their best by using "they", it makes reporting a story involving multiple people doing things where sometimes it's one person and sometimes it's multiple people doing things, but using the same descriptor "they" for both, it becomes difficult to convey meaning. Using a unique indicator would make reporting (and my comprehension) of stories such as this much easier.

@kuromushi3464 2 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you use they as a singular person more than you think. Whenever someone else is talking about another person and hasn't revealed their gender, the person listening would use they/them pronouns naturally in response. Example, "my cousin is coming from out of state" "cool, where are they from". I'm too tired to explain in more detail lol, but we already use they as a singular pronoun in everyday language, even when we already know a person's pronouns.
@MorbidGod391

They can be used to describe a person not just plural. You yourself probably have done this without thinking about it. An example is: I’m looking for a new manager for my company, and they should have some experience in their resume before we interview them. In this case, because I didn’t know the genders of whoever will apply, I used they. It might just be one person who applies or million, I don’t know. That’s why they was used. There are tons of other examples that’s just one on the top of my brain. But as previously stated, there is an attempt to make a néw pronoun but that takes time.
@someoneoncesaid6978
@someoneoncesaid6978 Жыл бұрын
@@MorbidGod391 - I get what you're saying, and I agree that people that don't feel either of the two current gender specific pronouns work for them should have one that they do feel comfortable with. I just don't think "they" / "them" works very well in the real world. I have and do use "they" when referring to an individual of unknown gender, but I don't (because it's almost impossible) use "they" to describe both an individual and a group of people within the same narrative. There are signals within writing that the reader can pick up on when using that word to know if you're talking about an individual or a group, but when the same term is used to reference both at the same time than those signals no longer work and the reader becomes confused on if it's the individual or the group that is being referenced. I've seen several different viable options that could be used, especially from the field of sci-fi novels, where writers have been dealing with having to tell stories about races that have more than two genders for well over seventy years. Here's a scenario: Tell me a descriptive narrative about three individuals that all use "they" as their pronoun. Tell me what they did together, what they did individually, and what different groupings of two of the three did that the third didn't do. It becomes extremely convoluted very quickly unless you use their actual names over and over again for almost every occurrence within the narrative, which sounds like an awkward 1st-grade Jack and Jill learning to read book.

It is not a "request". It is their personal identity that you have no say in. It is not your place to try to take away their identity whenever you want. Pronouns are not conditional, and they are not your decision. You don't use a black person's race to punish them just because you don't respect them. Doing it to trans people is not okay either. Ok so here’s the problem, what constitutes as “deserving respect” is INCREDIBLY subjective. So when you put things like proper pronouns, names, or identities on the table to be revoked, you’re saying these things are not automatic and send the message that anyone can revoke them from anyone else based on a purely subjective measure of “do I respect this person?” Because no, I don’t have respect for Ezra Miller. I also don’t have respect for Caitlin Jenner, Blaire White, or Buck Angel. But I’ll still use correct pronouns because if we can’t properly gender each other then there will never be any reason that those outside the community will. When you carve out exceptions for basic humanity, that allows people to set their own carve outs as well. The things that Miller is doing are infuriating and awful. But they should not have humanity stripped from them. We can condemn their actions and words without showing that “sometimes it’s ok to rob people of their identity.” To pull my favorite Doctor Who quote: “It doesn’t matter to whom the cruelty is directed, the cruelty itself is wrong.”

Yes, and not because of Ezra or for no reason, but because I've seen the bloody comment sections on videos about him where people are just using they pronouns for Ezra without making any comment about it and people are literally calling for them to be misgendered! Because they still think referring to someone by their pronouns is special treatment when it's not. But people are using it to justify their already nasty thoughts about non binary people so it needs addressing, not for Ezra but for nonbinary people as a whole! She's just saying she doesn't think Ezra doing bad things is an excuse to throw nonbinary people under the bus.

Who knew Ezra Miller is trans? Didn't even know the name before all of the legal trouble. It's increasingly annoying that I have to hunt and search for a pronoun of someone I'm have no personal affiliation with. I've stopped using pronouns at all with people I meet. No she/he, him/her etc. I am open to accept other peoples lives as they live them...just tired of being attacked for not knowing that they identify differently than they present. Go off if you want to....just my experience

If we as a community are considering being correctly gendered a right, then that right means nothing unless given to the worst of us. It doesn't matter what people do- even if they refuse to acknowledge and respect my gender, I'll respect theirs. You don't hear me saying the J in JK Rowling stands for Jonathan just because she wouldn't respect my identity. We can say they don't speak for our community, but we can't banish them by way of invalidation.

Honestly, I feel like Ezra just does it for attention. ( Along with a lot of other actors ) And yes , I say this from observation of Ezra . I have zero beef with your community, nor do I have any stake in it . It's merely my opinion . I really don't think Ezra is sincere . I also give zero sh1t that Ezra is breaking laws . That has no bearing on Ezra's abilities as an actor .... There's a question in a statement... What do you call a poly actor ? Actors ??? I have some thoughts about what I believe whole heartedly is an agenda to demonize your community. I'm glad you all are proud of who you are , good for you , I am too . But you really need to take a hard look at the ( why) of things . There's nothing in the court of public opinion in this world that's not there for no reason. Do not twist my words please . I've been arrested standing up for someone who decided to dress in drag when I was young , and I'd do it again . No , that doesn't make me some kind of hero . It makes me human . Treat me so , and I will treat you in kind .
