Let´s talk about Beethoven´s 7th Symphony, and how a simple theme based mostly on one note and one rythm can create one of the most wonderfull movements in classical music. We will have a look at Beethoven´s patreon system that allowed him to have freedom in his composition and see why less really IS more.

I'm not a musician, but I would tell you this. When I listened to the 7th first movement transition for the first time... had that same look in my face and as the new theme begun it suddenly made sense. What a stroke of genius. Listened to it at least 7 times in a row with the score as soon as I got my hands on it. It is one of my favorite passages of the entire symphony. I would say it is actually one of his bests, and underrated symphonies. You hear a lot about the 5th and 9th. Everyone knows those. Maybe even Pastoral. But THIS one. Not so much, I have no idea why.

Actually, the 7th has always been ranked with the 3rd, 5th and 9th as his best symphonies.

I love the Beethoven 7th and enjoyed your presentation. But I still don't understand why its simplicity hits the target, so appropriate, beautiful and dignified.

Not sure why, but the 2nd movement of the 7th is one of my favorites in all his symphonies. It’s my ringtone. I put off answering the call just so I can hear more of it, lol.

This is something really imporant and much needed. Not that It matters (but I'm a piano/guitar player/writer of 35ys) that just stumbled across your channel and I have to say(in my opinion) that your explanations of this music is unusually unique. What I mean is "a non musician with no knowledge at all of Beethovens music could EASILY understand and relate to everything you've explained but also smart enough to educate the most highest of scholars. I never post comments, maybe 2 or 3 per five years or so. But you are fantastic at quick to the point explanations that anyone can enjoy and learn from. I guess I could have just said Nice Work and thank you .. cheers

I stopped going to live classical music concerts for a while Then after Covid I decided it was time to get out and saw Beethoven’s 9th for the first time live. OMFG, I had rears in my eyes for most of the concert it was so indescribably beautiful. And the ending with the chorus and the beautiful poetry of the lyrics! Now I go often and anytime there is something by Beethoven I’m there! There is an anecdote about Goethe and Beethoven walking together passing nobility and how Goethe showed them the respect that was expected and Beethoven was like “out of my way scum” and got away with it because he was Beethoven. Don’t know if it’s true but if it isn’t it should be

Great video, thank you. I think Beethoven liked to quite often surprise with simplicity. Reminds me of the beginning 2nd movement of the first Razumovsky quartet, also with a prominent single-note minimalistic-rhythm theme. Though later things get more complex. I also remember notes in CD booklet for a recording the 6th symphony, which compared the endless repetitions of simple and little-changing motifs to Phillip Glass.

Hello, you are a very smart and interesting people. Just now I found this video and I apreciated it so much. Excelent exposition and explanation. The 7a Symphonie is my favorite of the Master Beethoven. Im amateur composer and I inspired on this marvelous work for the 1st movement of my 1st symphonie (if you want listen it I'd very honored). Speaking of his talent keeping it simple, Beethoven never scored redundant notes if overtones already produced that note.

I do have a question about Beethovens 5th. I probably should have posted this on your page on the 5th symphony which was awesome by the way. Anyway my question.... When you count the opening 4 notes are you counting (one one one two, three three three four ?)or one two three four, one two three four?
