I remember the A&P stores in the 60s and 70s. The smell of freshly ground Eight O' Clock was heavenly. I could stand by the grinder and breathe in the delicious aroma for a long time. One thing my mother and her sister agreed on was A&P quality. Seldom did they ever agree on anything else.

I know, right? And 8 o'clock coffee had a very smooth taste to it. That's the only coffee I can remember Mom buying when I was a kid. And I remember the coffee pot she used. It had a silver covering and, the main attraction, was the nose of the coffee pot. I would stand right there until it was done. " Sigh" I miss those days❤❤❤

In the mid 60s on Saturdays my mom would load the 5 kids in the station wagon for the weekly shopping trip to A&P. Thank you for this well done presentation! Growing up in the 1950s-60s, A&P was a staple of my childhood. My beloved Mom never said she was going to the supermarket, it was always "I'm going to the A&P." I fondly remember their 'house' brands; Jane Parker and Ann Page. And who remembers Yukon Club sodas, another of their own branded line? Three cans of for a mere twenty-five cents. I was fascinated by the coffee grinders at every checkout where they would grind their brand of coffee beans right in front of you. Eight O'Clock coffee was my family's favorite and it smelled delicious. If you bought ice cream they would give you a metallic insulated bag at the checkout to avoid having the ice cream melt on it's way home. Going to the A&P was a fun experience, one that I sorely miss!

Great video. Born in 1949, A&P supermarkets were all we knew until the early 1960's when other grocery stores started to pop up. Who could have thought that kids at in the 1950's would actually get excited to hear "we're going to the grocery store". We couldn't wait to get in the cereal aisle to see all the colorful boxes. Television commercials had a big influence on what cereals we liked to eat, and we always hoped we'd get one that contained some sort of toy or cut out on the box to play with. Having brothers and sisters, it usually ended up with someone crying because they didn't get what they wanted. The cry didn't last long as mom or dad would order us to stop crying or we'd "get something to really cry about" ! I wouldn't change those memories and great times for anything.

August, 1959 at A&P with a mile-long shopping list. We had just moved from Detroit to the suburbs. We had to stock the kitchen and prepare our first dinner in the new house. My father and I loaded up two shopping carts. For the dinner festivity my father got a beef tenderloin and some lobster tails. These two loaded carts rang up just over $60.00! What a haul! My Dad's knees buckled! A dollar sure went further back then.

In the mid to late 1960's/early 1970's we had a large A & P store in Natchitoches, LA (where the movie Steel Magnolia was filmed) that dominated the grocery market in that small town for years. Soon, once other supermarkets opened up (like Brookshire and Kroger - where I got my first paycheck job in 1973), their business declined rapidly until they were no more. What I remember most about A & P was their catchy theme song advertisement that was played often on the local radio station. The school bus that picked us up for going to/from school had speakers hooked up to the AM/FM radio stations and we'd hear that A & P commercial often.

A & P, and Safeway: Easily my two favorite Grogery Stores-EVER!!! I was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1962. We had an A & P in the Cloverleaf Shopping Center, as well as other Businesses as Joe The Motorist's Friend, and Town And Country. On East Gay Street, about a Mile to the North-northwest of where I lived, was the Safeway Grocery Store. I absolutely fell in love with the atmosphere, and the very scent and essence of that Store! Thank you for having this Video Clip on KZfaq. It certainly brings back a lot of memories.

My mom worked at the A&P in Noblesville Indiana for her entire career as a cashier. She retired from the company in the late 80's when the store was closed. She knew almost everyone in our town because of her time working there. The first location in town was a very small store by today's standards, about a half block from my grandparent's home, and I can remember walking the isles and seeing the displays, open refrigerators and freezers and even talking to the department workers regularly. The pictures in my mind are still vivid 55 years later and mom regularly talks about her experiences with the company. Great video that stirred up fond memories.

I''m 68 and and remember the A&P store down the street. It was a walk as a kid but I enjoyed it, when mom or grand mom would go for groceries they would take me, I always like it. They gave green stamps and we had bags of them. I remember mom letting me stick the stamps into the books and when she had enough she would trade them in for something. You could get some really good items with them, the more groceries you purchased the more stamps you got. Woolworths was another great store back then, had a counter for people to get a meal, ice cream soda, etc, had all kinds of things for everyone. I used to buy my model air planes for them with my allowance.

@@Solitaryman70 - I don't recall ever licking the stamps because we had so many. When it was time to put the stamps in the books mom would bring out a small plate with a flat sponge and pour water on the sponge. I would lightly press the stamps on the sponge then into the book. Most of the time I would do a whole page at once. Howard Johnson's was big back then so maybe once a month our grand parents would take the family there for a dinner I always like that.

So MANY grocery stores I am familiar with here in Southern California from the late 1970's and on. After the military, I worked for 18 years with Vons/Pavilions, however, my early childhood years was in the Youngstown/Girard, OH area and so A&P was one of the stores my grandmother would shop at. I just remembered how the employees would know REGULAR CUSTOMERS and she was addressed as Mrs. Morgan. I would like to believe that this was a precursor to me LEARNING PROPERLY to address customers as it shows respect and appreciation for shoppers shopping with the store.

I grew up in Aurora Ontario just north of Toronto. The subdivision I grew up in was built in the early 60's and A&P had a store in the shopping center. I remember going there with my parents when I was very young. I was born in 65. The A&P was closed by the early or mid 70's. I only went to an A&P once, in Illinois, when visiting relatives. This would be late 60s, early 70s. The one near their house had the first of the "high basket" grocery carts that later in the 70s became a standard before the deep carts came back. Not only were the baskets shallow and high, each one had a set of rollers and a belt in them. When you went to check out, you pushed the cart up against the conveyor at the checkout booth, and the cart locked in against it, engaging a sprocket on the cart. The groceries would move forward as the belt in the cart turned, moving the items onto the checkout belt. It worked pretty well. I never saw that technology again.
