A painful conversation with an atheist student about morality: SUBJECTIVE or NOT!

For the consistent atheist life is devoid of all objective meaning, in other words, there's no end or goal to his or her life. Just like the song "Que sera sera" whatever meaning you give to your life is purely subjective... Like Ravi Zacharias used to say "you can put any label on an empty bottle, but it does not matter unless its contents match the label"... Also, you can see that Tony (the guy in this video) seems to be bothered by the mere thought of a being (GOD) he clearly believes does not exist 🤣

I wouldn’t equate a lack of God or god a lack of principle. Even if you make the argument that desiring principle is desiring God. If he had a time and the thought of mind to mention it, all of morality seems to be based off of health and help.

@@FaySwine Perhaps someone just erased his/her comment, and that's what you were responding to. But sure you can't equate those two. You can have principles and still make no reference to God. What you can't do is justify those principles beyond yourself. To do that, you need an objective standard. But what is such an objective ruler that can measure what is good and evil so you can justify your principles? What do we know, other than a mind, that can make sense of morality? It is pretty reasonable how this points to God. You could find a lot of objections, but in the end, you gotta evaluate what's at least more likely. Indeed, I'm undoubtedly convinced that God is the moral Standard.

@@renancunha4799 If a person thought of life as intrinsically valuable, considered happiness as a factor to good ethics but was concerned about fear and addiction being obstacles the could find morality. There is no objective morality. Morality is a man-made concept and entirely dependent on societal factors. Morality, while generally agreeable to the whole (most of us agree it is wrong to kill), is relative to a given context e.g. a home owner shoots and kills an intruder. Religion does not own truth or morality.
@johnboehmer6683
@johnboehmer6683 4 жыл бұрын
@@coffeeandbytes9854 hate to say this Coffee, but you are of no higher authority to declare "no objective morality" than religion is to claim there is, sorry. We all have a conscience that says otherwise. And where it's true that culture can have a variance on a person's morality, this is a severance of what each person knows to be true. and as God says, as a person continues to willfully override his conscience, eventually he will simply give this person up to what they desire, turn them over to a reprobate way of thinking. This can happen on a cultural level also. The Bible is chock full of examples of this. A severance brought about by the fall of man, those given over to sinful proclivities, and a natural rebellion towards God as a result. By the way, if you do a study on the commandment not to kill, you will quickly find the meaning to be, "thou shalt not commit murder." That is, not to kill unlawfully. This is of course substantiated by the many lawful killings depicted in the Bible. The Bible also speaks about the spirit of the law, which covers all of those nuanced and unusual circumstances of life.

And really great you mentioned homosexuality! What is your opinion on killing gay people? Because your God himself ordered ot after all ( Leviticus chapter 20 verse 13 ) (I'LL just put it right here if you are too bothered to look it up ) "If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. Premise 3: What is good is objective and note merely subjective Conclusion: Therefore, there is no need for a God to have objective good. Problem 1: Begs the question - Premises assume the conclusion. The argument basically is saying because everyone knows what is good there is objective good (morality). How do I know what I know is good? Because I know its good. How do I know if my acting evil is me acting against my own beliefs? Because I know what is good. Problem 2: Circular reasoning - self explanatory. Problem 3: Self contradictory - because people individually determine what is good therefore there is objective morality.

The first thing a child learns to do is lie. They cry when they are hungry. They cry when they need to be changed. They cry when they are in pain. After a time, they learn that if they cry they will get attention. They are effectively screaming "I'm hungry. I'm dirty. I'm hurting." when they are not. They act as if it's a physical emergency when it's not. Now this is done innocently because they are not being calculating or conniving. Regardless it's one of the first things, if not THE first thing, they actually learn because from birth our world revolves around us until someone or something beyond us, external to us teaches us that we have to look beyond ourselves.

The majority of people do "right" because of fear of punishment, this does not make people evil. "Evil" and "good" are just words. Actions that lean one way or the other are only morally decided by either the majority of the population or the leaders when a group becomes large enough. Having morals is just trying to reflect how you would like to be treated by others, this its self is a selfish act in part trying to influence others to act according to your wishes. The worst morals are those not your own. Those who take the morals of others and use them against others, like religious groups. Because then they are not your morals but a shield you use to justify your own bad behaviours.

I can appreciate people like this young man. He is not being obnoxious; you can tell he is a smart guy, and is genuinely struggling with this issue. The problem with intellect is it gets in the way of what is obvious. For a really crass example from our current (bizarre) era: if someone is into bdsm, does that make it ok and "in their nature" to then perform those same kind of acts on you? No of course not, but according to this young man that is logical. If you zoom in close enough, you can always find something to point at, however, by doing that you are handicapping your scope and limiting your ability to see things in an ultimate context.

"It's objectively true that you have subjective values". This reminds me of the title of the movie "True Lies". What the lie claims is not true, but the fact that it is a lie is true. So this person is exactly correct. We can objectively claim that everyone can have subjective values. But that doesn't make those subjective values objectively true. It's a mind warp.

"Only if god exists is there objective meaning" Well no there could be other ways for there to be an objective meaning. "Otherwise life is ultimately absurd" Actually no, that statement is absurd. You don't need a man in the clouds for your life to have meaning. If that man isn't in the clouds life doesn't become absurd. Morality decisions can be difficult but they are often difficult when you have your man in the clouds. It may make you feel less comfortable that there isn't an all powerful overseer but that's not an argument. In fact when we look around the universe, what we see then makes more sense to see that there isn't any god there.
