It is impossible not to feel overwhelmed by the ongoing war in Gaza - the death toll, the horrific footage, the world’s inability to bring it to an end.
That is compounded for Palestinians, many with family members directly impacted, who feel they’ve always been seen through a racist and islamophobic lens, and that speaking out is a political act with consequences.
So how do Palestinians and Muslims navigate their feelings of anger with their faith?
This week on The Big Picture, we sit down with Palestinian-American scholar and activist Dr Omar Suleiman, the founder of the Yaqeen Institute in Texas.
Dr Suleiman built a reputation as a religious voice who resonates with the growing Muslim diaspora searching for leaders, and as a millennial often on the frontlines of social issues and protest movements in the US.
He speaks to us about his own anger, his commitment to challenging his government and why this is a turning point for how he sees himself as an American.

I admire how you can stay so calm while explaining and talking about what’s been happening to the Palestinian people now and for over a century. I cannot stay so calm, but I will keep trying because a calm argument is more convincing than an irate one. I will save this link to send to others. I find it so hard to remain calm when speaking of Israel’s atrocities on Palestinians to others who just don’t want to accept it…I can’t understand how people can be so blindly trusting of western media…even educated, kind people, even people who know they can’t trust media believe it’s more accurate than independent media, as if independence in any way is something to be feared….and as if a genocide of any promotion could ever be acceptable in any circumstance….it makes my mind feel crazy. How do you do it?

"Don't be consumed by your anger- be driven by it, and make sure the anger has a righteous base. Examine and re-examine your intentions." Righteous anger, yes, and it was wonderful that Dr. Suleiman then elaborated that we need to channel that anger into prayer, into solidarity. " Channel anger into prayer" are the words of a true spiritual leader for all peoples.

OK here’s one question. Has Hamas disciplined anybody involved in October 7 who murdered, tortured, raped and took women children and the elderly hostage?” Is Hamas being disciplined for not giving the Red Cross access to hostages? What about the Hamas charter that clearly defines its goals to be the genocide of Jews ? With all of these things to consider, why hasn’t South Africa taken Hamas to the international court of Justice ? And if you’re only focused on Israel, and you don’t seem to be concerned with the more clear violations of human rights by Hamas, then your line of questioning is disingenuous and nefarious . I would even add evil that this journalist is protecting evil for ratings and for the 1.4 billion Muslim, eyeballs that tune into television . He has sold his soul for ratings not for the truth. Is there a bias against Israel because people are more concerned with revenues and clicks and eyeballs then the are with the truth? Why hasn’t anybody talked about the more than 1600 years of of Islam colonialism on Israel land? Why is nobody talking about 1600 years of Islamic attempts to ethnically cleanse the Jewish people culture in history?

This interview opened my eyes even more than anything else before, it spoke to me at my core. I hear nothing but love and compasion coming through in this interview, there is no hate or calls for revenge only calls for accountability and justice. I wish I had seen the insurmountable struggles of the Palestinian people long ago and fought harder for the rights of indigenous people in my country and around the world. There is no justification for the continued, long-term ethnic cleansing and oppression of ANY people. Thank you so much for your perfect articulation of the current struggle of Palestinians and many others around the world. 🇵🇸❤️🇵🇸 The unabashed hypocrisy always floors me. Yes, everyone should stop calling Palestinians “prisoners” and call them hostages, because that is what they are. (I switched my language on that awhile ago.) Right now people are outraged about the alleged rapes on Oct 7-for which there is zero evidence, and good reasons to disbelieve the allegations-but refuse to give a single moment of their attention to the years of sexual abuse by IDF (IOF) against Palestinians, for which there is so much evidence it’s sickening. Even the language of “soldiers” referring to IOF, but calling Al-Qassam and Al-Quds “fighters” is biased, discriminatory, dehumanizing. They deserve to be called soldiers, and frankly I think they are more deserving of that than IOF. I could go on… I watched the interview with Mia Shem-one that’s over 20 minutes-and it made be both angry and sad the way her indoctrinated perspective of Palestinians so radically skewed her interpretation of her experience and her refusal to allow herself to see them as just human the same as herself.

I appreciate the heart-felt testimony of this Imam, however I would argue that the resilience of the Palestinians has nothing to do with religion . The compassion you feel for the injustices perpetrated on innocents has nothing to do with any religious mind set. It is despite religion that our humanity perseveres. When these toxic ideas are put aside, humanity will be able to progress. Until then, I'm afraid it is more of the same.
