A Part of the Valley: Station Cafe

The Balestrazzi family opened Station Cafe next to Treorci train station in the 1930s. There was a big Italian community in South Wales due to Italians moving over between the 1800s and 1900s in search of work, while the mining industry was booming. This is why at one time you’d find many Italian-owned cafes dotted around the South Wales Valleys, some of which are still open today.
The Balestrazzi’s then spent 84 years serving food, coffee, ice cream, sweets and more to the local community, creating a social hub cherished by locals, many of which would visit every day. They decided to retire earlier this year.

Dom is a legend and we locals love him. Always smiling and when I was a kid me and my friends would love to play the arcade games and as long as we behaved he would let us be. Wonderful family and I grew up with many fond memories. Thank you so much Dom and family 😊❤

Spent many a rainy evening and weekend in Dom’s as a teenager. Some classic games in the arcade bit at the back, Wonder Boy etc 🕹

I remember that mate 😆. Wonder boy golden axe pacland. A pound would last hours if you were good enough. Good times. 👍

So sad its closed. Last met up with my cousins in there in 1990. One cousin came all the way from Switzerland and another from Pentre!

We moved to the Rhondda when my dad got his first teaching job in Treorchy Comp in 1970(ish) I can just about remember my mother taking me into this cafe and having a bottle of coke with a red and white paper straw. I'd guess this was between 1973 and 1975

Great memories from doms , always called in before school , get 3 singles and a quarter of sweets lol , then go there on dinner time for his steamed pies the best , sad to see it now closed
