More wooden boatyards please, my first memories are of visiting my fathers amateur boat club building shed in an old quay warehouse in Carrick on Suir over sixty years ago and I have been boat crazy ever since! SkipRay.

Very enjoyable to watch this after attending one of their week long courses on building traditional wooden boats in April this year, when Matthew was our tutor for the week. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

The memories you drag up in my life. Doing my A-Levels in 1973 to 75 I asked if I could could continue woodwork as a project. What I wanted to do was build a new Int Moth out of 4mm and 2 mm ply. I had forgotten that I bunked off study class Timetable set between Phys, Maths and Chem A level . I was running lengths of 8x4 through the bench and band saw to make bulkheads and tortured ply Hull and deck assisted by junior class woodworking students who the master thought might benefit by trimming and stick and glue techniques.

Did the course in 2010/11 it was a fabulous experience. Not just the learning but the people and camaraderie were amazing. 😊

Brilliant video... I come from a traditional fishing background 18ft punt type typically... the loss of the traditional fisheries has had a awful knock on impact on many types of traditional boats ..as once you lose the traditional fisheries the need for the particular type of boat to suit the local conditions is gone.. many many designs and typs of boats are being lost all around these islands.... well done Tom

I attended The Totnes School of Guitar Making nearly 30 years ago, The Academy reminded me of that. A very intensive course that inspires a very motivated group of people. Great vid Tom, have you signed up yet? Lol.

Very interesting Tom. Out in Australia where trades folks are paid a respectable wage, guys that can do this are very thin on the ground and we are surrounded by classic timber bay cruisers. I think you have to have a referral and to join a waiting list to have them work on your boat. Then there's the bill afterwards.

I was thinking the same thing and googled this Boat Building Academy just last night. Then this video from the Legend Tom Cunliffe was recommended to me. Really exciting to see various ages all passionate about boat building. Thanks for your comment as it really made me feel not so alone in my thinking. Cheers
