Great episode. I have ADHD and wanted to be a psychiatrist so I could help out children who are like me. But this is an interesting path of being able to help our children with learning disabilities and autism

Me too! Its incredibly frustrating just how much ignorance there is around ADHD/ADD. If you have not already, check out the “ADHD Experts Podcast” on Spotify. The ones by Dr. William Dodson are especially good.

I'm currently in a master's program for Elementary Inclusive Education and I work as a 1:1 special education aide in an alternative elementary school with autistic kids. I have spent the past few months thinking about a career change into medicine, specifically into DBP, so hearing this information has been super helpful! I didn't want to give up my desire to teach if I were to pursue another path and it sounds like I wouldn't have to if I went down this route.

As a mother of 2 boys with Autism (20 and 10 year old) and Registered Behavior Technician , having personal and professional experience with Autism, l call autism a family condition because it does affect the whole family in some way. Spark institute has discovered 150 genes associated with Autism. Soon it will be possible to diagnose kids at birth. The ongoing research on autism is very promising. l have been following the studies for the past 17 years. When my first son was diagnosed with autism , the CDC statistics showed 1/255 children received diagnosis. As l followed this trend it was 1/188, 1/150, 1/110. Ten years ago when my youngest son was diagnosed, the CDC stats showed 1 out of 84 kids got diagnoses of autism. Currently, 1 out of 54 kids are autistic. Looking at this downward trend it is projected that by 2035 every second boy born to African American or Hispanic mother will be autistic. If you are not sure what you want to study in med school, Developmental Pediatrics is something to consider based on the need alone.
