Lauren, I have mentioned before that I am disabled but I need you and Mark and the boys to know that you are an inspiration to me. I am more then determined to push myself in rehab and be able to get up our of this wheel chair so that I too can enjoy an adventure, like your cruise. Thank you for allowing me to share in your cruise adventure. I hope you had as much fun as I did.

I'm not entirely sure of all the places my Finnish great grandfather visited, but he went to Alaska and Yukon during the gold rush as a 15yo with only a note in English in his pocket saying he's hungry and will work for food. He managed to make enough money to return to Finland and open his own carpentry business (AND he won a violin at a raffle!) Thanks to these events I was born, it wasn't very common that people from these parts ever returned to their home countries. I do have tons of other very distant blood relatives all over the US, as of course a lot of people migrated there over a long period. I've always had a fascination for Alaska thanks to this, I really hope to visit one day!! So happy I get to experience a lot of Alaska through your videos 😊

I made a video to share with all the tourists that have spent 1 day or are going to spend 1 day in Skagway. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g612fMdolta8qoE.html I’m sure you discovered one day is not enough to really understand Skagway’s rich history and all things to see or do. When I created this video about Skagway I realized I only experienced tiny fraction of its unique history and all the fun/free things to do. Outstanding in-depth history of Skagway/Dyea and the mountain passes to Yukon Gold Rush of 1887-89 - “as good as any Ken Burns Video This video is created by someone who spent a day in Skagway and wanted to give everyone a deeper understanding of Skagway’s rich history. Took me about month to create. Enjoy, and thanks for sharing. I make educational videos for fun, non-profit, with over 300 videos. Google: “mike wick minnesota videos”

I am loving this series and watching you guys enjoy Alaska through the tourists eyes. Cruises get a bad rep, ppl assume it’s going to feel like a factory farm animal surrounded by globalized corporations, but cruises know ppl want their space and authenticity and they generally do a good job of providing the perfect balance of privacy and entertainment on the ship, while respecting the local culture and landscape at the ports. We cruised to Alaska in 2010 and it’s amazing to see the amount of small business growth that has developed in these ports over the past decade.

The White Pass mountain train ride is a perfectly ordinary, slow train ride that goes up a mountain. Eventually you'll find snow around and about, and then you'll reverse, and go right back down. If you look to one side you'll see motor vehicles zooming up a mountain road, then you'll realize how slow you're really moving. Quite frankly it's not nearly as great as these tourist videos make it sound, and it's quite a time consuming exercise too.

Hi guys, thanks for your cruise videos, good to see Skagway again. I did the trip from Skagway to Seattle on the ferry MV Columbia back in late August 1989 after spending a month in the Yukon and Alaska. The trip took about 4 days. Seeing whales cruising pass the ship, so cool. Our day in Skagway was beautiful weather too, with 3 cruise ships in port and people lined up all day to take helicopter flights out to the glaciers. Saw the northern lights on our first night leaving Skagway, so amazing! You live in a great part of the world cheers.

Good Afternoon Hamm Family ❤️ It's been a rainy few weeks here in Virginia with a few sunshiny days or moments sprinkled about. Today it's a mix of rain and sunshine. Temps in mid to upper 70s with 80s sneaking in here and there 🌦️ It's also been a hectic, neverending to dos, visits, etc. To say I'm exhausted is an understatement, but life is good so I can't complain 📝 I'm getting caught up on your videos a little at a time... so, here I go... Skagway. I am absolutely mesmerized by the beautiful scenery of Alaska and Skagway has not disappointed 🏞️ Rock slides are scary, and can be devastating... the "footprint" left in its wake surely scared the pants off of many. I pray no one was hurt. We had to detour once through the mountains after a storm caused a few smaller rock slides 🪨 I'm not an early bird, but I guess if I ever make it onto a cruise, I'll become one, if just briefly, because long lines and extended wait times are even worse 🐦 I love the old time architecture and history of towns like Skagway and the surrounding areas. You and Mark are wonderful storytellers. It makes learning new things or old forgotten things more fun and interesting. I love the statue of the man and his dog. So sad about the avalanche, the lives lost, and the other hardships faced by the people who came to find gold or help build-up the area 🏘️ I know it may sound odd, but I love old cemeteries. It's peaceful and interesting to see the names of the people who passed years ago, and perhaps learn from a marker or snippet on or among the tombstones. Of course I pay my respects and perhaps pull some weeds and/or leave some flowers, a coin or rock/stone 🪦 Trains. My Mark absolutely loves them - the older, the better. Thank you for sharing your adventure (beautiful... and, that tunnel... 😲); and for sharing the railroad history of the area. We've been on several day trips through the beautiful mountains and countryside of VA, WV, PA and NH. The dining car and sightseeing trips are the best, especially when the menu represents the time period or local cuisine. We love the train museums and have visited several. We've considered taking a 7- or 14-day trip by train. Makes me want to leave tomorrow... I better pack 🚂 Speaking of packing... that's a lot of luggage to lug around the wilderness of Alaska and Canada, especially up a mountain. And, my Mark thinks I over pack. I need to show him this list... mine could be worse 🧳 Fry bread... yum. I make it occasionally... it's easy and delicious: butter and honey, cinnamon, powdered sugar, Nutella with bananas or strawberries, apples and caramel; or, if you prefer, something savory like Indian Tacos... all the fixings loaded up on top of the fry bread. My favorite recipes are below... you can add extract, like vanilla, citrus or almond if you wish. I'm partial to the Cherokee version... it's in my blood 🧇 Grocery prices in Alaska still haunt my dreams 😳 And here is where I had to hit pause. Dakota decided he wanted Momma hugs, cuddles, head scratches and belly rubs... my sweet lil tiger 🐯 20 miles... on a bike... Oy - but, it does sound like fun. I'm so happy y'all had a great time 🚴‍♀️ Floating on the river and/or horseback riding sound fun too... I'm game, sign me up... I truly miss horseback riding 🏇 If a pilot ever tried to land a 747 at that airport, he'd have to be either heroic or totally insane 🛩️ Mark's helmet head and your lack of a butt cushion made me laugh... sorry 😂 Again, thank you for sharing your adventure, your thoughts and your recommendations. Take care. Yah's Blessings 🤗 www.norinesnest.com/traditional-indian-fry-bread/ www.sspowwow.com/post/frybread-recipes

The line up the mountain for the Gold Rush was not just a line of men, it was also women where anyone going up the pass. Each person was required to have 200 pounds of supplies before being allowed to continue. My great, great, great-grandmother was one of the women. She started a laundry service and later baking bread besides owning two claims before she got sick and had to return home.

Our Alaska Cruise was a favourite over and above Carribean or Mediterrain Cruises ..............but our most memorable cruise was a Carribean Cruise on The Jolly Roger Pirate Ship Cruise . On this cruise for 10 days every ' Pirate ' ( passenger ) became part of the crew and we all took turns cleaning the rooms . swabbing the desks , cooking and serving , etc. and there was a rule ; you couldn't work with your spouse . The reward after the work was done was ' grog ' which was a rum punch swizzle and the rule was you must have a drink in both hands . It was amazing and with only 24 passengers we got to know everyone really well besides the 10 regular crew and Captain. This was back in the very early 80's and I haven't been able to find any information on this particular cruise in the last 3 years ( it's now 2024 ) . We recommened this cruise to all our friends but only 3 other couples decided to try it - and they all said it was the best cruise they every went on .

Skagway reminds me of Silverton Colorado and that train ride reminds me of the Durango-Silverton train.

That was a fun day.... and thank you for including all the background history for us. Imagine having to carry all those items up that mountain for the gold rush...I'm surprised they even owned all those things that long ago. At the halfway point on your bike ride, can you imagine all the stars you could see on a dark night? Must be so beautiful. Also, my sister and I rode a bike on our town's bike trail, seemed like it would be a fun time. Did I mention we had not been on bikes for years? The trail was 18 miles round trip...back before people took water bottles everywhere!! I thought I would die before we arrived back at the trailhead....brutal! We made it back with about 15 minutes to spare, to turn the bikes back in. I was sore for days! The train ride was so cool, I've never had the pleasure of doing that. Thanks for another fantastic video!! 😁

This has to be the best video I have seen of Skagway. What an amazing day you had and the weather seemed perfect. I have done the gold rush train to white pass and it was amazing. I am so so jealous of the biking you did. I am putting it on my to do list for my next trip to Alaska. I will check out your other videos.

Very cool. My husband and I will be doing a Princess Cruise Tour (cruise and land) on 9/9/23. We are sooooooooooo looking forward! We are doing the morning White Pass train, then we will explore Skagway including the Red Onion Saloon and “The Days of ‘98” show. Very excited!

Another brilliant video - so interesting! I was shocked at Dyea and how everything was just gone …,that massive hotel! So sad it’s all gone 😢 I wish I flew because I would definitely be doing that Alaskan cruise!

Glad you enjoyed it through our videos. Dyea was a boom and busy town for sure, just couldn’t be sustained without a good port.

I only know of Skagway from Mecc's The Yukon Trail, and in that game it's a hangout for hooligans and con artists.

Have really enjoyed your videos. Lauren you do a great commentary…. Giving us lots of practical info along with historical and artistic insights. Just wondering what kind of business you are in, since in one video you mentioned you were there to do some business.. Looking forward to our first trip to Alaska this June/ July.

Mark is The Iron Man. E-bike is brilliant. Train in White Pass was magic. Understand your bum, been there. Great touring and exercise for being on a cruise. Hellfire, Skagway now on the list also. I am going to need to move or spend two months in Alaska. Thank you! 🥰

Another great video!! We have been on numerous other cruises as well as Alaska. I agree that the Alaska cruise is the best. We are currently working on booking a group cruise to Alaska for next May. We can’t wait to get back there.

On our first Alaskan cruise in June, 2005 it was 80 the day we were in Skagway. It was sooooo hot on the train that day. If you go again, the Street car tour is also amazing. All of the drivers are women who dress in 1920's attire and are funny as heck. At the cemetery, they act out the murder of Soapy Smith. Our tour guide told us that hardly any locals shop at that store. Most of them pull take their car on the Ferry to Juneau to stock up at Costco, go bowling and do other things they don't have in Skagway.

16:02 Haines is connected to Skagway by road, it’s a gorgeous six hour drive going into and out of Canada. The eagles are NOT on the Chilkat River, they only gather in the thousands in the fall/winter. Didn’t see a single eagle there a week ago.
