This boondocking location takes some time to get there.....but oh boy, it sure is worth it! The views are SPECTATULAR!! I love areas that are along a creek or reservoir. We did not do any hikes this trip but I have been told there are some epic hikes in the area. This is one area that would be really enjoyable to explore via side-by-side, motorcycle, or 4X4.
These are the two hot spring books we have with us that we reference to find hot springs.

I love that you all rate the campsites at the end. So helpful that you cover cell signal, what size rig, safety for off leash, you all cover all the big ones. Thank you! Oh and your awning! Love it. We made a homemade one similar to yours for our van and it is so nice, not only for shade but for being able to cook outside during light rain, etc.

Thank you for mentioning how you like how we rate the campsites at the end. We have had only a little amount of feedback on that and we're wondering if we should keep that part up. 😎 I wonder how long the awning will hold up? I like that all the replacement parts are cheap. 😎

Ok, I do like the metal conduit idea. Great for rigidity! Never thought about using spike in dirt for pole. I had thought about that same general idea (pvc poles) a few years back. The pvc permits me more flexibility for length. But, the pvc strength also limits rigidity. I will probably get several lengths metal pipe and connectors from Homer’s and cut different lengths to suit my needs! One issue I have is that my pickup bed is only 5.5 feet long and the shell is cab high! I have a total of 4x 1/2 gal plastic buckets filled w/ sand for weight and duct taped and used as needed. I do use the bungi balls with 3” dowel rods at 1/2” thick on my tents when in wooded areas. I have 3x of the Homer buckets I clean out with a Clorox wipe. I fill them with potable water and use the screw on lids from Homer’s. I keep a fourth 5 gal bucket for waste water from cleaning dishes and dump it as far as I can carry from camp. My 2x 5 gal shower bags are placed on the driver side of the pickup shell (about mid way back) to gather warmth from the sun, and my portable potty tent is placed adjacent. That tent permits ample space for potty and fragrance free shower by one at a time! The potty is yet another Homer Bucket with applicable seat, paper, plastic bags, and chemicals. A clear necessity for me as I no longer have a large intestine. I place my Harbor Freight Predator 2000 about 50 feet opposite sleeping area and completely surround it with cut sound board to dampen noise. A small tarp set over a pvc homemade sawhorse provides protection from the elements and helps dissipate noise as well. The Predator runs all night for powering my CPAP. (Predator is Medically deductible). It also keeps my portable fridge running! Everything is actually dis/assembled and easily stored in the pickup shell with room left over. Cook fire is either camp stove or campfire using 4x of the 4x8” paving bricks placed on their sides for height and an old discarded oven rack. Pickup is 2019 F150 Sport, super-crew w/ 5.5 foot bed under a standard cab high shell! Finally, the best protection for the rug bug in pickup bed is provided by the abundance of Harbor Freight moving blankets, bought dirt cheap of course! Camp protection is courtesy of Glock model 40 with appropriate Underwood Xtreme Penetrator bear rounds! (Check local laws) Finally, checkout some of the National Forest Lands for some great FREE camping! Take some good books and stay awhile!

Dave, I think the brake fluid problems with water are really effected by higher elevations. That is why they come and go. I experienced this same problem in Silverton with my Harley. Pam and I had to ride to Ouray without brakes. The problem disappeared below 6000 ft. Brake flushed are a good PM every couple years.

@@oneadVANtureatatime it’s not hard at all. If the computer will let it go into gear it is safe and very effective. It is no different than punching it and it down shifts. First gear is the only one that is a pain on the Promaster, you have to come to an almost stop before it will go into first. I’ve been driving mine for a long long time with over 100k miles. I can get 60k out of brake pads doing this. Get in the habit and save your brakes and sanity! ;)

We are contemplating switching over to it; they installed it as close as 2 properties over from us. Thank you...you two have a great week, also! I hope you have some great additional CO travels!! We have an Outdoors RV 4 seasons travel trailer coming in September-ish. We'll use it primarily for boondocking in CO and the immediate surrounding states for the next 5 years while I still work. Then we'll push out to do 1-2 month trips to focus on specific regions of the country. It is pretty much like a national park in Ouray; so we'll come back home for a month or so in between trips. Love y’all’s videos! Even though this one is a couple years old now I have to ask a couple questions. Just two months ago at the end of August/first of September 2023 my wife and I were camping in Colorado for two weeks. We took the road to Owl Creek Pass and over to the Cimarron River. Ironically we camped in the EXACT spot y’all stayed next to that big cottonwood tree right beside the East Fork Cimarron River. Nice little stream side sitting area just a few feet outside our door. We love off-grid “boondock” style camping as we have a BIG truck camper. A Lance 1172 w/double slideouts and enough solar to stay off-grid as long as we want. I also love flyfishing whenever in Colorado as Texas has much fewer trout fishing opportunities! My question: in your video you walk/hike down to where the Cimarron enters Silver Jack Reservoir. This was where I wanted to spend some our time because where a river enters a lake is historically one of the best fishing areas. Because we had no cell service I couldn’t look at Google Maps and see how close we were to the upper end of Silver Jack. Did y’all walk down the road(858) to the lake or did y’all simply follow the stream down to the lake? How far of a walk was that? I ask because of all the undeveloped campgrounds we have stayed at this spot ranked as one of our favorites. We will be back! Thanks again for y’all’s great videos! Neil from Texas

You guys have an admirable and unique approach: low-key, unpretentious, straight forward, and real. "No chairs after 3-years..." Love it! We went out in our RV a few weeks ago, showed-up at the camp ground, took out our Coleman only to find we had no matches and no pots or pans with us. Yikes! We're newbies, also in a Promaster (159") and will be setting out in October from Maine. Buen Camino to you guys.

So many wonderful and cool things in this video!! Not the brake problems of course. Just glad you weren't stranded. Vehicle problems are so stressful. The awning looked pretty cool. What were your thoughts? Was it a good addition? The scenery is amazing!! I will watch this video many times. The elk herd....What?? Amazing!! We hope we can travel to Colorado some day. Our summer is way to busy this year, so no summer time travel for us:( We will be putting these locations on our future bucket list. I loved watching Dave and Roodle fish!! So fun!! I am not sure I understand why you would keep fishing with no hooks left on the lure...oh well, as long as Dave is having fun:) Can't wait for next weeks video. Safe travels!!

Ok, I hate to say this, but I think the brake shop pulled a fast one on you. The brake system is a closed loop system. Water can’t get in the master cyl. If the water had been in there over time, it would have foamed and turned milky instead of swirling.

Once the brake fluid was changed out our problems stopped. You had severe rotor heat, 2 times. Hope your rotors did not warp. Might also need to have your front wheel bearings inspected/repacked? Steep/long downhill, always put automatic transmission in low. Sure it will be slower, what is the hurry in that environment? Thanks for sharing another mountain place.
@oneadVANtureatatime
@oneadVANtureatatime 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips, Clark! The brake fluid flush and replacement did the job. I was wonder about the rotors handling all that heat myself. We have been manually shifting into lower gears a lot more recently. Out of curiosity, how high do you let the RMP’s get before you start breaking? I usually apply the brakes around 4.5 because of the sound.
@clarkleakins879
@clarkleakins879 3 жыл бұрын
I would try to keep the low gear RPMs definitely below the redline. I don't know if you have an RPM indicator on the dash display. Your owners manual should state maximum speed for manual downshift when going uphill. That might be the highest rpm for the particular gear.
@clarkleakins879
@clarkleakins879 3 жыл бұрын
Regarding maximum RPM going downhill. Search internet says your van is 6500 max. You probably want to try to stay below 4500rpm. I also understand that your gearshift has plus symbol for upshift, minus for downshift. This is how you should be dealing with the downhill (minus will lower gear each time you "click" the minus direction). Also, your tow/haul mode being "on" usually helps to keep the transmission in a particular gear longer and higher rpm before upshift. Likewise, hold that particular gear to higher rpm when being "pushed" downhill by a trailer. New vehicles have computers, more gears/speeds (4 to 6) and frequently much lower first gear. My older vehicles, 4 speed automatic, I can push a button to immediately get 3rd gear. If necessary for steep downhill, I will manually shift down after braking to below 1500rpm. For short extreme steep downhill, under 3 miles long, I will manually shift to first. The engine usually revs high, apply brakes firmly to 5mph if more than 1 minute of engine "screaming" and not gaining speed. Watch your temperature gauge, low downhill speed, less air through the radiator, engine can overheat! If you plan to do lots of mountain driving, I suggest that you invest in a transmission temp gauge. Perhaps an aftermarket additional transmission cooler. Heat is the number one enemy of the transmission.

Great advice on suspicious brake caliper sticking & not fully retracting. We went through same area twice doing Durango to Ouray stretch up and back. We thought our 10,000 mi - yr old Promaster smelled hot too. Tough grades. As Dave pointed out the Promaster BRAKE warning lite automatically comes on if you brake at all on steep grade due to a sensor in brake fluid reservoir. Ours came on both directions. But a stop by side of road and turning vehicle off and back on results in warning lite going off.
