It was only a matter of time before this came here. This album, and the preceding one, have been in my heavy rotation for 30-35 years. I bought Laughing Stock on release day because Spirit of Eden hit this 20-year-old music nerd so deeply. And truth be told, LS took the top spot on day one (no small feat) and remains there. It is the perfect album, in my opinion. Recording, mixing, sequencing, composition - it's all here. Any site that dissects Cardiacs AND Talk Talk AND Floating Points/Pharoah Sanders AND so much more also goes in heavy rotation. Big fan.

this is as other people have said an incredibly incisive reading of this song, and it really makes me want to hear your thoughts on the complete album (sorry). the peace and calm and reflection of this song is unmatched in music, for me

With the context of the album, I have to say your "eye of the tornado" interpretation is bang on. The first several songs are tinged with fear, sadness, and uneasiness, and this song is the turning point of the album. As I see it, thematically the album is about someone struggling with faith and sin. New Grass is about acceptance of doubt and previous failings outlined in previous songs, and growing/healing past them.

My favorite song of all time along with John Coltrane's psalm, I love the divinity that those songs transmit because they really make me feel connected to Christ, excellent video, greetings!

Yeah! Very jazzy drumming, utilised with a non jazz song without jazzy parts even. I do think it sets an atmosphere that no other style could pull off. Just perfect!

Just talking about jazzy drumming. In metal Iron Maiden's drummer, Nicko Mcbrain, has jazzy foundation. You can hear in many Maiden's song (you could remember from Infinite Dreams). Obviously being metal use bass kick, toms, but he uses very often snares and his style is jazzy influenced. He uses also drums set in a particular way, with toms and snares almost vertical

This song is blues. A form of English blues in the feel not so much the structure. i was impressed with its arrangement and artistry. Perhaps it is good 'break-up' music? But otherwise I don't want to feel 'down'. I want to feel alive, and so I will listen to something lively and bouncy!
