In today’s video essay, we are analyzing queer subtext in dead poets society. The film, especially Neil and Todd's relationship (anderperry!!) has long been speculated to be (at least a bit) gay.. We're discussing Mr Keating and the philosophical movements of transcendentalism and romanticism he teaches the boys, the conflict between conformity and identity, how the film redefines masculinity, and way more :)
I hope you enjoy my philosophically queer analysis of dead poets society!
Let's get into it!
PS: rewatching dead poets society made me even more excited for taylor swift's "the tortured poets department" album hahah!

The movie shows how straight men can benefit by the positive influence of a non-traditional male role model, and thrive in spaces free of toxic masculinity. Conversely it shows how the homophobic policing of gender harms all men, and the fear of "queerness" stifles individuality and freedom of expression for the whole group. But it's not an accident either that it's the implied queer characters who face the harshest consequences. I think it does a really good job of analysing masculinity through both a queer and straight lens.

For me Neil and Todd represent a true romantic connection, they just clicked somehow, and the way they acted with each other was beautiful and it is still one of the examples I hold of true love, connection, tenderness and vulnerability. I saw this movie as a teen before I knew people of the same sex could be together, but still I basically wished they were in a romantic relationship without me even noticing. I wanted them to be together forever, take care of each other, share a life and hug a lot. I was a bit dumb but I truly didn’t know at the time that people from the same sex could be together. I just thought they needed each other and should be together forever for that. The scene of Tod in the snow breaks my heart. :( This movie is one of the most beautiful representations of love , connections, friendship and vulnerability of straight and queer. An expression of masculinity in the most beautiful way. I am a woman and I approve. Sorry for my English

“O, Captain, my Captain” moment, in Death of Poets Society” is truly the scene that shaped the film into the classic it became. Robin Williams invoke a sense of purpose, and so much emotions that it will stay with you forever.... even when the film eventually fade in memory. AMAZING video, thank you :)

Ahah i dont wanna over share but this movie ment the WORLD to me as a closeted trans guy growing up. I saw myself so much in neil and todd in their own ways. Parents that dont care, parents that could never understand. It struck a deep cord in me and i'll always be thankful I had it growing up, it was actually the 2nd DVD i ever bought.

I‘m trans too, not a binary trans guy though but nonbinary/genderfluid and this movie makes me long for the male adolescence I didn’t have. It’s painful because it’s a reminder that I‘ll never have that and it’s also soothing because I get go live out this fantasy of being a young man or boy vicariously through the movie. There is more to this movie too, but this is probably one of the main reasons this movie speaks to me that much and I think the queer aspect of it is what helps me identify with it even more instead of just feeling like an outsider looking through the windows

I just watched three of your videos and your analysis are so good, all the efforts you put into writing your scripts is impressive ! I legit thought you had WAY more followers than that. Anyway, loved your breakdowns on these characters, Dead Poet Societies is such an inspiring piece of art, I adore it ! And I always thought of how much meaning Todd and Ned’s relation and evolution throughout the movie made more sense looking at them as queer characters :) I will follow what you post in the future !

Superbe video, I absolutely loved it! I agree, "Dead Poets Society" is truly a number one movie that includes a major societal shift, as well as the cycle of abuse by a culture of toxic masculinity. The teacher - Robin Williams (such an actor) - brings a perspective of hope... "Carpe Diem" , seize the day and make your life extraordinary ...
