Photography is often a long and winding journey, and even though photos can be created in a fraction of a second, it's usually the case that it takes a lot of work and time with a camera in hand to get to that point. In this video I go back to a spot in Snowdonia that I visited three years ago for a photo opportunity, and thanks to my stupidity, it's taken me until now to get a picture.

Thanks for the honest reviews and great life lessons. I don't know why I felt it was important to mention.. Worst nightmare happened to me recently. On shoot with a couple (just before their baby is born) took about 1000 photos. Saved on both cards. Got to my studio, started transfering the photos, crashed on photo #14. Went to see what happened, both SD cards were clean. No files whatsoever ... a single tear dropped down my face, then ... massive anger! Had to reshoot the whole thing the following week... first time it happened to me in 10+ years of shooting every single week. Set both cards on fire. Bought new cards. They did the job fine.

Yeah, this is not SUCH a bad nightmare. You can usually find an SD card in any town. What's worse is a "no SD card" message when the SD card, full of your shots, IS in the camera. Just it's dead now, and you don't have a backup.

You should consider using a longer lens (70-200mm equivalent) for woodland. I saw at least 3 marvelous compositions in the first four minutes of this video that a longer lens would have captured brilliantly. They're great for isolating details, tree branch patterns, etc. in the woods. My last foliage shoot the other day, I used my long zoom almost exclusively. Anyway, congrats on the new house. I look forward to your upcoming Wales content.

Saw your title - and having just got back from a tramp/hike to Kapuni Lodge on Taranaki on which I'd discovered I had no SD card in my camera and nor did I have a spare stowed away somewhere even after taking great care to pack everything I needed the night before - I immediately thought, 'today it's no SD card in the camera!' And lo and behold, there you were - remedying a 'No SD card' from three years prior. Fortunately for me, I won't have to wait three years to get up to Kapuni Lodge again as it's a 40-minute drive from Te Hāwera to Te Rere o Kapuni followed by a 90-minute uphill trek. So enjoy your videos, James. Looking forward to the new location and the new office. Oh dear on the news that Wales is going into lockdown. Stay safe.

Yup, had this happening to me too, my girlfriend was EXCITED to drive back 15 mins while her friend waited at the lake.... Never close any port on your camera before putting the card or battery back in. Never ever close empty ports!
@raksh9
@raksh9 3 жыл бұрын
That's assuming you're putting cards or batteries back in very soon. Leaving card or battery doors open increases the risk of them being snapped off.
@PiTdeLyX
@PiTdeLyX 3 жыл бұрын
@@raksh9 There is absolutely no reason to ever leave the SD card out of the camera. Transfering the data is usually done in seconds and then its ejected and back in the camera. Batteries take some time to charge, that's true - even more of a reason to not close these doors, you WILL have forgotten that battery by the time it is charged. Get a second one, switch through them with charging. Also, while you empty your card and charge the battery you don't use that camera - put it somewhere safe.

Was curious, so Googled it. "Close to the disused 19th century, water-powered Machno Woollen Mill built in 1839, there is a drystone-built, packhorse bridge over the Machno river. This is known as the 'Roman Bridge' but it is actually 16th or 17th century. Penmachno is, however, near the section of the Sarn Helen Roman road from Betws-y-Coed to the Roman fort of Tomen y Mur."

Happened to me in Germany in March. Over several days I'd been balancing the load out I was taking for walking around the city of Nuremberg. Trying to work out what I needed for casual photography with my X-T1 and still have bag capacity for gifts, snacks etc. Third day enjoying a tour and realised I left the SD card in my laptop from transferring photos the night before. Gutted. So I was faced with a 2 hour mess around going back to the hotel or just enjoy as much as I could and use the phone. I keep spare SD cards in my camera bag but I didn't bring that on this day. Lesson learnt. Luckily my X-T3 now has 2 card slots. So I always keep a 32gb UHS-II card in the 2nd slot that I don't really use. To cover that in future.

I did that over the summer. Brought my brand new refurbished camera to my favorite forest specifically on a cool day to get some water photos. No card. Thankfully there was a store an hours drive away so I was able to buy a new one to use. Sure I could easily have just come back the next day, but I was so annoyed with myself that I insisted on going back and staying for a few hours to make up for the lost time.

Why am I talking uphill again? Haha. Sorry to hear about another lockdown there James, but great you're in a new home to keep you busy for a bit. The scenery there looks stunning. We had lockdown over autumn unfortunately so missed a lot of it this year. Really enjoyed the mix of drone & go pro footage.

While photographing the Golden Gate bridge more than 30 years ago from a cliff on the Sausalito side, I started to slide down. It was a 750-foot drop. I was wearing street shoes, and there was nothing but dirt on the way down, so I had no easy way to put on the brakes. There was a small rock sticking up, which I grabbed. I gingerly removed the Hasselblad from my neck, figuring I could come up with $3000 to replace it, but I couldn't replace me. Luckily, I was able to scramble back to safety (very carefully!). Trust me, there are worse things than getting out there without a card. BTW, wouldn't it be smart to carry a spare card in your pocket? Then It wouldn't matter whether or not the camera had dual slots.

Hey James @13:05 you mentioned "windscreen wipers" for the lens of a camera on a drone. Brilliant idea! :) Wishing I had the windscreen wipers for my Gopro, on my motorcycle helmet, vlogging here in the Lake district over the past few weeks. Thanks to you, your hints and tips and travelling to places to get that "perfect shot" you inspired me to bring three of my passions together: Motorcycles, Photography and beautiful scenery. Thanks again. Keep up the good work. :)

I've also gone out without an SD card in my camera. Bloody annoying. But what's even more annoying is that had I taken my bag with me, I have a heap of spares in there! On that day, I had just taken the camera and the long lens as I was intending to take photos of a local wild barn owl. Saw the barn owl. Couldn't take the photos. Didn't see the barn owl again on future trips out with the camera complete with SD card.

Might be the best walkthrough of the process so far. Except I couldn't focus on that when the "don't mention the rope" game was on.

I also forgot my sd card once. Me and some friends went to do a BASE jump from a powerplant in use. So we had to jump over fences, run from dogs, avoid the guards and climb a long smokestack only to realize I forgot the memory card. I didn't cry and climb back down, so in a way it was still a success. But still.... Anyways from that day on I always leave the door open if there is no memory card in. And if there is any room for it (as there usually is on action cameras) I add a spare memory card with tape on it. I have not yet found a good spot for my DSLR since they use larger memory cards.

Yeah it's like to see your process for these pics. Especially as they look completely different from the video footage - which is usually much more saturated with deepest darks. The final shots have a milky blue assistance by comparison. I was waiting for you to drop the camera throughout the video #heartinmouth😲

Get over yourselves guys. Every shot of water is blurred unless you have the luxury of a bright day and 1/1000 sec shutter speed. James shot at 1/13 sec will show some movement. It's just a case how much or how little is appropriate for the scene and how you want the image to look. James was just being narrow minded and so are you.

@@CornishMotorcycleDiaries Enjoy your boring molten wax pictures, I guess. A small amount of unavoidable movement is fine, but intentionally using long exposures on water just looks disgusting to me.

Painmaker as I said, just get over your narrow minded view of life and you'll learn lots. Sometimes fast is good, sometimes it's not. Disgusting is a term of abuse not necessary here. We can disagree politely? Can't we 😏

I feel your pain. I recently went for a hike in Edale to shoot some Autumnal shizzle and as I got out of the car realised the sodding memory card was still stuck in the back of the Mac! Grrr! In a huff I left the camera in the car. A third of the way around I realised I still had all my lenses in my rucky... lugging all that extra weight up hill and down dale! Grrr! Then half of the way round I blummin realised I didn't have one, but two spare memory cards with the lenses! FFS! 🤬 I'll never make that mistake again!

Cheers, James, just put my extra SD cards in my bag; I’ve been keeping them on my office desk all this time like a dumdum. We won’t even get into whether or not to use an ND filter for making water look pretty. (Love the pics, though)

That is a very interesting bridge and amazing drone shot! I agree with your worst nightmare especially when it happens with a client and you have to go buy some sd cards at a gas station! The good thing about them, they are cheap for 2GB! This didn't happen to me, a friend told me that story!!

Your photography is really inspiring James, I even rented a G9 this fall to try downsizing. By the way, I also try to minimize tripod use and find if I want to blur water (if it fits the story) stacking several handheld shots in Photoshop has the exact same results. Also let’s you fine tune the amount of blur

@Tim Smith If your setup lets you handhold 1/20 acceptably sharp, take 20 of those images and you can blend (align>stack>mean) them in Photoshop for the equivalent of a 1 second exposure. With IBS you could easily handhold much slower than 1/20 resulting in fewer images needed for a total of 1 sec.
