Paul is legend. I also credit him for introducing me to the greatest musician I’ve ever heard Allan Holdsworth. I remember reading a playlist of his favorite albums and nearly everything he put on that list was a Holdsworth album. Hearing that music opened my mind and ears to a universe I didn’t think existed. I will forever be grateful to him for that introduction…Atheist was also my introduction to prominent bass work. When I first heard Piece of Time back in the day Roger’s playing flipped my world upside down in terms of what was possible. His attack reminds me of Geddy and Doug (Watchtower). I also prefer his playing on the Unquestionable demos compared to the Tony Choy versions (no disrespect as Tony sounds amazing), that particular attack just wasn’t there. What a monumental loss for extreme music that was. I still listen to his playing to this day in complete awe and admiration, watching his live footage shows what a natural he was, just effortlessly ripping out those lines and not breaking a sweat. He may be gone but he’s not forgotten…

It's insane how much in common Kelly and Paul have, from pioneering and implementing the jazz fusion in death metal at its early stages to (tragically) losing two of the greatest bassists this genre graced.

Me and some friends got to meet the guys from Cynic after a show back in 2010. The energy was electrifying and they were all humble, down to earth dudes. Paul was so awesome, he signed our tickets and answered our questions candidly. Beautiful experience.

Absolutely get the people not actually listening making reviews being nonsense, Jupiter is a great album and held up to atheists reputation of making something new every album, same with cynic. Never the same album twice and that's even more impressive playing technical progressive stuff.

What is said about criticism in music podcasts or webzines is kinda complicated : even when we are not in this "journalist landscape", people judge really hard, especially with the rise of music streaming services. You launch a playlist, you don't like the song : you skip to another one. The album format is struggling against this logic of streaming : we've got so much releases with movies, shows, music, video games... So it happens that many people just "swallow" everything like maniacs in order to be "into the trend" of following the stream of new content everyday. That's why I love Prog music : you have to be commited to Prog, you can't envoy it loosely. You must have an active listening of a Prof record to understand the project and what artists wanted to share with it. I must admit I had difficulties to understand Jupiter at first. But, gosh, just "Faux King Christ" : with this track, you can understand the new sound, the project of briging Atheist to some extremes. I really love Jupiter. And Ascension Codes... I laughed so hard reading criticisms about "the atmospherical parts that ruined the flow of the record". Those codes between songs is specifically what links all the tracks together. It's part of the meditation process. If you don't understand what mindfulness meditation is, then it will be really difficult to embrace the complexity of Ascension Codes :'D It was a real pleasure to hear this podcast : cheers for you, prog legends ;)

That is so true about well crafted complex albums not being consumed and enjoyed in one sitting, that was definitely true for me with both Dimension Hatross and Nothingface by Voivod, I'm ashamed to say that I strongly disliked both when they first released. I love and adore them now, both are in my top 10 all time favourite albums. What an insightful interview between 2 warm hearted wonderful people.
