American country singer Merle Haggard left behind a legacy that forever changed country music. Merle Haggard was a devout Christian, stating “It’s almost embarrassing to know that the Lord cares that much for me, but I’m going to shout it to the world.” Much like his late friend Johnny Cash, Haggard was no saint.

Not in a million. I grew up on Haggard and a small part of me died with the day he parted this mortal plan. It’s odd how someone whom you’ve never met can have a direct affect on a persons life. Merles songs resonated with my soul

As a kid, I can remember listening to this on the radio when it first came out and I was so moved, almost to tears. And of course part of that was because of the way “The Hag” could almost transport you into a song for those 2-3 minutes in that absolutely masterful way. BUT ADDITIONALLY, The ONE AND ONLY Miss Janie Frickie, was(and still is) also an ABSOLUTE MASTER in the way she could add to songs, and to this day I don’t think she EVER got enough credit (outside the Nashville community) for how she helped so many songs SORE TO #1, because of the sound she helped create. And this song is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES!

To get thrown into San Quentin for non-violent convictions and prior escapes, and then to come out of prison and redeem himself to become an accomplished writer, singer, instrumentalist, and performer. Hag was a real country legend. It's hard getting used to Merle and the Strangers not coming around and doing a show every year.

Didn't we have some of the some of the best Country Singers? We have the cream of the crop right there. What a combination. I firmly believe that no other female singer, other than Janie Fricke, could do justice to that song like she does with Merle Haggard.

I can't tell you how many times I've watched and listened to this. I can so relate to the heartache of this song from a relationship long ago with a guy who throughout his life has been afraid of getting too close to those that love him. Every now and then he still contacts me - even after 37 years.
