「 The universe is the dark essence of the true starry sky, and the earth is the accumulated memories of time. This is where alchemy derives its name, and thus, it is the basis of all life; this was how the Prince of Chalk was brought into fruition...
The first step: Nigredo. In which transmutation is drawn from primordial forms. He was hardly much to be discerned as of yet, a nothingness within the unfathomable tapestries of life and birth. Later, they would say he was beautiful beyond reason despite the unusual circumstances of his synthetic existence. That his eyes were blue, pale blue, like opals. That his blood bled gold, that a star lay embedded at the base of his neck, ornamental proof of his extraordinary imperfection as a human. That he was young and lovely and inspired reverence in even his own creator.
The second step: Albedo. Where the process of change begins and the very term from which he would later be named. Perhaps it had ordained his path from the very beginning. Thus was he melted, molded, life bestowed with the gift of alchemy's touch. The first among his memories in this world was that of light, or rather, the refraction of it. Beakers and vials, aludels and crucibles, all wrought in mystery and gleaming among cluttered shelves, divining up wonders of their making; countless times they had composed and produced elixirs, potions, quintessences, salts, sulfers, vitriols, tinctures, elemental separationsーso many benefits to the service of humanity came from these vials. It was fitting, then, that he should be born among them, birthed to life within a glass belly: the Kreideprinzーthe Chalk Prince. And it was from behind and within such glass that heーa tiny thing, a thing so miniscule one might compare him to a thoughtless fetus within its mother's wombーobserved his maker. He knew nothing of anything and especially not the inner workings of what had now been rectified between his bones: a heart, so, most naturally, for however natural synthetic life could be considered, he knew the woman he quietly observed was not his mother. But there was no doubt that his life stemmed from her. And for that he could not help but be stirred.
Thus the third step: Rubedo. The refining of feeling. Not just a body, but the ember that burned within. There was, in him, such a simmer of emotions. Like chemicals distilled in an alembic. He dreamed in his sleep and imagined in his wakefulness, the hours of life running through him. It felt like...it felt like the turn of a page. A story just beginning.
Now, the final step: Citrinitas. Wherein transmutation is brought to light. Now he could touch the world, and the world could, most fascinatingly, touch him back. The cold and strict woman, whom he called master, spoke to him, fed him, clothed him, taught him. There was no need for him to contemplate anything thereafter. All was decided by her. She was the needle that he haled from, and so too did she stitch every fiber of what he knew life to be. Until, one day, she disappeared. The Chalk Prince's creator left him with but one final task.
