Poaching abalone off the coast of the Mother City is a dangerous business and poachers have to be supreme free divers with the ability to stay under water for long periods. It’s illegal but the proceeds from the crime are often so lucrative that the poachers are willing to risk it all. Now a national government policy to revamp fishing harbours in the Western Cape is turning some well-known poachers into certified divers and legitimate business owners.

Fantastic story! Under a more responsible, honest government, the new South Africa should have had many more such stories to tell. Sadly the ANC will leave behind a legacy of greed, corruption and destruction. Nothing more. Well done to these divers and the leaders behind the project. Very inspiring!

What an inspiring story. Just goes to show that if you recruit the right person in the right way you'll find them. Best of all they were lured from crime to becoming the best they can be. Well done to the men who made this possible

These are the kind of programs we need in South Africa. Crime would subside a lot more with avenues to trade and earn a living

Easy to find the poachers. They operate with impunity at houtbay harbour. Launching in the early evening in large rubber ducks. Most evenings. No lights on there boats or safety equipment. The poachers run the harbour.

Nice good story all good and well. But only poachers and criminals getting opportunities to change their life's for the better and live their dreams... You don't qualify if your a unemployed, law abiding citizen begging for work the legal ways and still paying the same taxes rates and living costs and also just as unfortunate as the next or maybe more in this country or too much a guilty conscious and/or good hearted to turn to crime to get a chance to make life better... And wonder why else you don't qualify.

The banality that education is the answer, would be very uneducated. But 'the answer'? and please correct me if I'm wrong... Start farming these salty crustaceans. Then grant full lobster, crayfish and abalone farming & fishing rights to the PEOPLE! Who's ancestors have been surviving on the ocean for eons? But hey, what do I know?🤷‍♂️
