Wolf O0C dropped a bonafide poop magnet on this trail, and subsequent travelers, allured by the intoxicating magnetism, had to take a sniff! Now, we are not trying to be gross but there is no way around it: turds serve an important biological function-mainly as an information source and means of communication-for wolves and other canines.
Of course, all dog owners know that dogs have an affinity for sniffing poo. However, unlike dogs, wolves must remain vigilant to defend their territory from neighboring packs or intruding wolves. I.e., the presence of intruders in a wolf's territory can have real-world consequences for that wolf.
Thus, sniffing scats allows wolves to determine if a scat belongs to a pack member or intruder, and additional information could ascertained from scats as well. And conversely, dropping scats is an effective way for a wolf to announce their presence in an area.
As such, it is no surprise that scats almost do have a magnetism for wolves passing by. Wolves almost cannot resist stopping to have a sniff, and for good reason.
