Ethan Ramsey Unpaid?? The house exists coz one of the spouse is earning. Say if the husband is earning and the wife is a homemaker, does that make her unpaid? Her expenses are coming for the husband's money. And appreciating someone for doing their job is good but surely not necessary

@@ajaykarmakar4944 right there should nothing like unpaid doing you're own house work Like you're not servant to get paid for it Even children does house work it doesn't mean father mother them should pay money for housework In rich society mainly there is lot of servants to do stuff like we seen in movies In middle society either one of them work and other do housework to reduce time If both are working house work also manages If it's forced marriage than case is different Other than words like thankless unpaid doesn't exist I don't need any payment or thanks for doing my housework

@@ajaykarmakar4944 even if men are going for work ,then at the same time, not allowing his wife to work, even after getting job offer is the patriarchal system here.If in a house hold,2 bank officers (both husband and wife) are there ,due to great Indian patriarchal system, making breakfast for the children, all kitchen related things will fall on wife's shoulders than the husband. If both husband and wife are working,in majority of houses,if a guest comes to their home on a Sunday, the female gender will suddenly go to kitchen to get tea, coffee, snacks while the male gender enjoys the living room.

@@ajaykarmakar4944 Well... the monetary part is true to an extent but your take on appreciation is classic instance of patriarchal mind. Will you work in an organization for your life without being appreciated? Remember, appraisal is also a form of appreciation. You know, coming from a family who’s grandmother and mother used to give us occasional household chores to do every week when we were kids, washing the dishes of everyone who ate was one of those chores. I was never disgusted by it to be honest. It helped instil a sense of discipline in me. Hell, I think the only time I got a little disgusted were during the first few times when my grandma asked me to clean all the bathrooms in the house, but after awhile, I got used to that too. One major takeaway for me was that there is nothing wrong or degrading in serving your loved ones. Every member has an equally important job in maintaining a family’s well-being. Also, if I may go off on a tangent here, most of life is suffering, every one of us suffers through life....so, is there anything more noble than suffering for others so that they can have a better life? It’s the stuff that makes great leaders. Now, don't get me wrong, am not asking anyone to be a push over and let people walk all over you. You have to learn to take care of yourself first before you can take care of others.

I feel It's weird to be disgusted by touching leftovers of a romantic partner, irrespective of gender. The only reason touching other's leftovers are considered disgusting is contamination with their spit, else it's no different from our own leftovers. But if people consider even touching their partner's spit disgusting, how do they kiss ?

The irony is that in this movie husband character played by Suraj is a Sociology teacher Edit: `When u wake up laying in bed, looking into the kitchen, saying "coffee" to wife or mother and sitting there and asking "What's for breakfast?" Society sees its normal. A patriarchal society taught that all those works are women's jobs. That Patriarchal lesson being questioned is the beginning of the change. When I saw The Great Indian Kitchen and seeing some comments below supporting the lead male character by Suraj I felt relevant because it showed me how a male ego works. When the wife pointed out a mistake of her husband, it gets ego hurt apologizes to her, stabbing her later on the name of it..The film was made by the people who destroyed the whole country by declaring menstruation is pure. Wives are not the robots who paint the bolt with grease to make it up. to wash underwear, to take all the things they say, to lay down when a man wants to give it to them. A bird in the cage should be made to understand that it is in bondage. Putting that bird in the cage should be made to understand that the society which is looking very normal is wrong. If you want to unlearn something that has been going on for centuries a society should grow the thought that this program is wrong.

The wife never complained doing housework. She wasn’t appreciated and lost any motivation. Appreciation doesn’t always mean that you speak words like thanku. Your gestures speak aloud. The husband knows table manners when dining out but refuses to do the same at his home, “ I will do as per my own convenience at my home.” and also demands an apology from his wife for even pointing this out to him. Both men eat like animals on table, leaving mess, wasting food. But their own demands are fresh food, no pressure cooker or mixer grinder, no food from refrigerator. Husband won’t even call a plumber to fix the leaking pipe. He feels disrespected when wife says a foreplay before sex would help her with pain that she experiences. He actually couldn’t accept the fact that she too knows about foreplay as if she’s not supposed to being a woman. She is not allowed to do a job for the only reason that it’s not good for children who were not even born yet. The tradition regarding menstruation just added fuel to fire, and actually helping her to get out of the hell she has been living in. She can’t sleep on bed, enter kitchen, touch anything because she’s unlucky when menstruating. Don’t know what disgusted the men more her menstrual cycles or the dirty water leaking from pipe that she gives them instead of tea. Cooking and doing cleaning in home is not at all bad and can be very enjoyable but appreciation matters.

Perfect review and your review should encourage non-Malayalees to see this film. Unfortunately, the impact is going the wrong way as everybody including Malayalees are thinking such patriarchal life happens only in Kerala just because this film is made in Kerala, while the story is so very true in almost 90% of the household in India. Because just the other day, after seeing the trailer one of my North Indian known person was asking `Kya Kerala mein women ka ye haal hai, koi freedom ya respect nahi'. While I was laughing at his ignorance and wanted to tell that women in Kerala has more identity and get more respect than anywhere in India as compared to especially North, where women are treated just like pets with no voice and freedom even if it is a well educated household. But then I understood the basic mentality issue with Indians. We try to alienate each social issue with some places, community, religion, caste etc. while not accepting and appreciating that its a universal problem and together something need to be done and mindset to change. Kudos to the film maker and team in making such a beautiful film. It is films like these which should have 200 crore business. Yes, Malayalam film industry is churning out best movies and fortunately people of Kerala are accepting such films where neither the hero or heroines are glamorous or shown six packs or shirtless or biceps or ice cream looking faces, but true natural looking beauty whose talent speaks like here that of Nimisha and Suraj. What a performance? I am glad that the Director has not shown the heroine as feminist or the husband as cruel, but in a true way trapped in the upbringing of all of us with traditional circumstances while everybody is good at heart.

The point on the 3 course meal sparked a memory and a moment of hilarity. When I was newly married into a super traditional South Indian Brahmin household, I prepared lunch with Sambar, a spicy brinjal curry, Rasam and veggies and papadam, I was really proud of myself as I never really cooked much and usually it was a one pot meal. I was telling my father in law the menu for lunch, I think I expected some sort of Pat in the back praise. But he said, sure sure this is enough, we can adjust, no need to be fancy. I was speechless ! for a moment and I quickly said that this was the fancy bit of my repertoire and not to expect even this for subsequent meals. Luckily they turned out to be not very fussy 😂

Trivia: No characters in the movie, except the house help Usha and the girl Janaki, have names. Nimisha and Suraj are the actors who play the roles. Absence of names make the film much more universal in sense. Also by giving name and thereby identity to the dalit Usha, the director makes the politics of the film evident. It's very rare to see an empowered dalit woman character in the film whose identity inspires the female lead to take a stand in her life. Interestingly, the film doesn't portray the men as abusive and that's the beauty of the film too. It speaks about the subtle and nuanced characteristics of patriarchy and how it is deeply rooted in everyone. As mentioned in this video, the film is gonna stay for ages...

Nah, there are good artist everywhere. Its that people in many other states and culture doesn't want good movies that enables audience to think. They have lots of problem of their own and movies are just for celebration for them. Kerala is much more civilized and chilled out people because of the improved living conditions. They have more mental space to understand and appreciate these movies.

I don't know about other parts of our country, but in kerala this untouchability for women during the menstruation period is still being followed in many households. Coming from a brahmin family, I have seen my relatives sleeping in different rooms and abstain from doing any household chores during those days. They don't even show their faces to the men in their houses, who go for pooja in temples, during those days. I am lucky that I didn't have to do all that because my parents have always been against that idea. I would like to know if this tradition is followed in other states also...

The carrer growth that malayalam films provide for actors can't be matched by any other industry. Suraj started as a sidekick playing comedy roles and now he is starring in films that requires you to show your emotions and he is not an exception. There were others before him and hope that many others follow and not shy away from accepting smaller roles in films.

A marvelous movie. A movie that seems to be a live broadcast from a few Indian kitchens. Though small portions of the movie did make me question about the realistic outlooks of the movie, the overall experience was pretty satisfactory. The acting and the direction was par excellence. The story is carried out in such a manner that you can feel the frustration, irritation and desperation of the character. Though there is hardly a light moment in the entire movie, and though the movie is serious to the point of leaving you feeling asphyxiated towards the end of it, you realize that is the very motive of the movie. To make you feel the life of a great many kitchens in India. However, there was an altogether different realization of mine that was reaffirmed when I watched this movie. It made me appreciate the men in my life a lot more. Be it having a father, who I have never ever seen make specific demands about what he wanted to eat, and always be satisfied with whatever was laid out on the dinner table. Or having a husband who can and does manage the entire household; from preparing the tastiest of pohas to knowing what grocery has been used up in the kitchen and ordering it up at the right time to cleaning our washrooms - an individual who has proven to be a 'partner' in every sense. Having a brother who understands and appreciates the Industry that is an Indian Kitchen and helps out from time to time. And having a brother-in-law who can hold his own in the kitchen and household as well as his brother does. But who I appreciate the most is probably my father-in-law, who in spite of being from a different generation, has a mindset miles ahead of his time when it comes to managing the kitchen/household. From knowing exactly where in the kitchen each vessel is kept, to being able to answer when his kids or daughter-in-laws approach with a question about where the latest packet of mustard is stored, his hold on the know-how of the kitchen amazes me. From being the best sou-chef, be it by keeping all the ingredients ready when his daughter-in-law is cooking or by chopping the onions in the exact shape and size she wants, to being the chef of a few of her favorite breakfasts and taking pride in it- his outlook and mindset in the field never fails to win my admiration. My father and brother are people I have lived with all my life and hence know well, but my in-laws are what life gave me when I chose my partner. So, I wouldn't have had a say in the way their mindset is shaped. Hence, admiration is well deserved, wouldn't you agree?

I had a love marraige but still being a female in a marraige is never a boon... Its what 5years of marraige so far had taught me... There came a point where i voiced my views and the lack of fairness, the finale of which was many women do it daily cooking ckeaning maintaining the house hold even along with going to work and providing consent for sex at night.. Why cant u? Why do u make such a big deal out of it? If u cant please leave i will find someone who will do it all just fine. It killed me... And it killed the whole vibe and happiness in me these days i hardly look in a mirror or dress up... I was criticised for that too i looked good before now am not good looking it seems... I have come to a point where i dont care anymore... I cried watching this film at msny places it touched my heart kudo to the makers and the cast and for jammy who gave his genuine view.

The beauty of the movie is in it extreme simplicity. It tries and, according to me, succeeds in giving a snapshot of a traditional family's daily life. For sure not all of India is like that! Many things are changing in urban areas and new generations are starting to question traditions such as arranged marriages and gender roles in the family. However, at the same time, the vast majority of the Indian population sticks too even harsher roles in their traditional rural environment. Indeed, about 70% of Indian population is still living in rural areas, often isolated and very much linked to ancient taboos and traditions. What is shown in this movie is not so much different from what was still alive in the '50s in Europe and in my own country, in Italy. What is really different is the cultural and religious background of these two hemispheres, as well as the economic development of these societies. In fact, one thing is the cultural tradition which allows and supports these hateful and ill mannered behavior toward women, as such present as well in Europe in a very recent past, one other thing is the presence of religious pillars to support and promote them. For this no reason for me to go much further on, if not for recalling Ambedkar's discourse on the widely spread acceptance of Manusmriti's laws, embodied, even if not directly known, by the vast majority of the population and their consequent mindset. Women's submission as well as casteism, with their harmful consequences, have a common root with which the Indian society is faced with.
