Steve Jobs once told an interviewer that "if VisiCalc had been developed for another computer, you'd be interviewing somebody else." Dan Bricklin wanted to streamline his work at Harvard Business School, and he wound up changing the world of computing forever. Check out this talk to learn what led him to develop his revolutionary tool.
Dan Bricklin is best known for codeveloping VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet, while he was a student at the Harvard Business School. VisiCalc is widely credited for fueling the rapid growth of the personal computer industry. Dan Bricklin is CTO of Alpha Software Corporation. He is also president of Software Garden, Inc., a small consulting firm and developer of software applications that he founded in 1985.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

As someone who used to wear holes into those original green spreadsheets with frantic erasing, thank you Dan you took away the tedious time and replaced it with the creative, thinking time. Personally I think the spreadsheet is the greatest invention of the 20th Century. Congratulations and gratitude to what you did!

I was in the audience for this talk (you can see me and my family briefly at one point), it was an amazing speech. I'd met Mr. Bricklin in person many years before, when I was starting out in the computer industry in the mid 80s, but this was the first time I'd ever hear him speak. For those who just want the summary version - you're looking at the man who invented the entire idea of the spreadsheet app, literally from the ground up.

Thanks to this man when I first came to America from the Horn of Africa in 80's I hardly spoke English but I love the concept of spreadsheet and learned programing and the rest is history, I became very rich man. Thank you again.

SIX YEARS before "Visicalc" for the Apple II, I programmed a full screen interactive, WYSIWYG MAINFRAME spreadsheet on an IBM 370/145 at ICI in the UK. It was programmed in IBM Assembler language, executed under CICS and used double precision Floating point instructions. It was known as "The WORKS RECORDS" system. It used IBM 3270 terminals, had named cells and could be used by multiple users at the same time. It had an ADABAS Database backup and recovery and was used for 27 years (without a single bug) by Chemical Engineers and others - who knew nothing about programming. This was documented on Wikipedia but was later removed. There is a copy of one of the users manuals is held at the "Computer History Museum" in California (but has been filed under an obscure reference).

One thing for sure is this gentleman has a very talented mind. Most people would stop when they reach success of something as significant as VisiCalc, but I'm very impressed that he's continuing in the field he knows and loves. I've been following Alpha Anywhere (a remarkable HTML based Rapid Application Development software) for years now and it's clear Dan's continued involvement has contributed into making this award-winning software amazing. May you follow your dreams and I hope you find success in what you love to do
