Here's a quick rough-cut video going over APRS. I'll start with some of the high-level technical bits of "WHAT" APRS is, and then I'll dive into the more practical "WHY" you might want to use it.
I start off with the technical stuff, so if you want to skip that and go right to the practical stuff, use these timestamps to jump around:
INTRO: 01:18
Technical Overview: 01:51
Practical APRS: 05:26

I'm an aspiring overlander and I want to get a mobile and a handheld. Pretty sure I want the TM-710GA too. Keep up the good work! VA7CBI.

Hey Brien, nice video of practical uses for ham radio and APRS. I use APRS and the SMSGTE gateway frequently to communicate with non ham family and friends when we are out of cell signal, to let them know where we are and that all is ok. I have found as you mentioned being able to still find a repeater/digipeater even in areas where I have no cell signal. 73 Warren - N3DLU

Well here’s some pedantry: Wrong way round. APRS originally stood for APacketRS. When it came out there was no position reporting. It’s only after GPS became popular, and was integrated into the protocol that it was mistakenly called APositionRS. This is because it was then used for tracking more than anything else. Even the Protocol manual title is an error. It was not authored by it’s inventor, but Bob did later accept the new acronym. He can be found on KZfaq stating such even after his passing, so now we could say either are correct.

Can somebody elaborate more on the digipeater function? Can you send a specific somebody a text message addressed to their APRS node (not sure if that is the right term) (let's say, it's going to a ham friend in another state)? Would your text message then use other APRS digipeaters (provided there are digipeaters along the path to your friend) to travel all the way from your rig to your ham buddy?

I have another radio that supports fusion, and there are a few fusion repeaters here in Tucson, but I've never used any of them. The Kenwood TM-D710 (and previous generations) are the most APRS feature rich, but the Yaesu FTM-400XD is a good close second and will usually be a hundred bucks more affordable. There are also handheld options like the Kenwood TH-72A/74A but I don't have much experience with them. Radioddity also makes some low cost APRS handhelds that I'd love to pick up and play around with some day

I am curious about responding to a APRS text message. You mentioned that your wife is a ham, however if someone(non ham) receives a text and that person wants to respond do they have to be a licensed ham?
@SonoranSpaceProgram
@SonoranSpaceProgram 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, i'll be putting together another video specifically about messaging and using the sms/email gateways. In short, yes, you need to have a license in order to respond to the text message or email. The text messages are sent from a gateway phone number, there's a mechanism for proving your license to the gateway and registering your own phone number. If the gateway receives a message from a non-registered phone number (for example, an unlicensed person) it ignores the message and does not relay it over the radio network
@bradleyjohnson452
@bradleyjohnson452 4 жыл бұрын
Brien Wankel I would have assumed it was more like a auto patch phone conversation where only the person operating the radio need be licensed.
@SonoranSpaceProgram
@SonoranSpaceProgram 4 жыл бұрын
@@bradleyjohnson452 it kind of is in the sense that the outbound text initiated by a ham can be delivered to anybody whether or not they are licensed. with autopatch, the ham is always initiating and controlling the call. The license only comes into play when the recipient wants to respond back with another SMS. With autopatch, the recipient has no way to call back from phone to radio
@va7dgp
@va7dgp 3 жыл бұрын
@@SonoranSpaceProgram Here in Canada, The text message is going out by Internet to the SMSGTE gateway being Transmitted by a ham license gateway. As you mentioned Autopatch. It's the same idea except it's digital. The control radio operator is a licensed operator. AS long as the text message doesn't break (3) party rules, like ordering a pizza at a pizza shop and sending your visa/master charge number, etc. APRS and Winlink use the same rules. I can text my wife ( not a ham) and ask her to order a pizza. She can make the call and reply saying Pizza ordered on it's way to your location. The returning message is sent by SMSGTE which has a license call attach to it. I see nothing wrong.
