Hahaha, in my house we have around 2 per room living freely, they survive without us doing anything at all, probably they get water from the WC, since they moved in we no longer find any scorpions around, they live among us and are really friendly. I think they have migrated due to climate change, before they used to live closer to the coast, usually they leid their eggs inside power sockets, and make kissing sounds at night, I'm From Cuernavaca Mexico

Armando Occelli In many warmer areas of the world geckos of one sort or another will move in like that, they would lay eggs in our house when I lived in Hawaii. That may be the most entertaining way to keep them, and as you mentioned, they help control pests. Enjoy!

I keep dart frogs. Like 15 enclosures. I bought one mourning gecko to live with my alpha female cobalt that dominated her tank mates so gets to live alone now. After about a year I noticed she had replicated. Now I've been capturing and relocating the offspring to other enclosures. They only eat fruit flies or clean up crew. I have the crested gecko food but rarely use it because I'm worried about it rotting. No joke I bet the one lizard is now 30 it's always neat seeing a newly hatched babies.

@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 8 жыл бұрын
I have found it depends partly on numbers (the more you keep together, the more they are active during the day) and partly when you feed them. If you establish a routine of feeding them at a specific time during the day, they will learn to come out and feed at that time. Some individuals are also less shy than others.

Jared Gijoza i don’t have any problem finding homes for offspring, you could sell them, but if you can’t, though it sounds brutal, the parents will tend to take care of most of the offspring if you don’t remove them soon after hatching. Also, any eggs that are cracked will be eaten by the adults.

@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 5 жыл бұрын
Diane Lippiatt Good question! This may sound harsh, but if you do not actively remove the offspring from an enclosure, the population will tend to self-regulate. Some offspring will survive, but the adults will naturally prevent overpopulation through predation. I personally try to find and remove all hatchlings so that they all survive, as there is a ready market for the young.

Sadie Benter At that age, I would just skip a day of fruit flies and then offer the CGD. they may or may not go for it immediately, but once you have offered it a few times, they should. Really young hatchlings are often less interested in it, but 3-4 months old is old enough. 😊👍

Keri Samurai Great questions! There are several other micro geckos that could do well on a small vivarium like yours. Various Sphaerodactylus species would do well. If you do decide to get mourning geckos, I would suggest no more than 2 or 3 in a vivarium of that size. In this species, males are extremely difficult to find...I've never seen one. I have located a colony of geckos of this species for sale and I want to buy it. The owner keeps the young with the adults in a simple terrarium with minimalistic decor with no problems. My problems are fourfold: 1. How will I manage the temperature? Should I place the heat pad under the bottom or on one side for the winter? Also, what are the signs of heat stress in the summer? 2. What should I do when checking or cleaning the terrarium? Must I cool the whole tank to slow them down before opening it and collecting them? 3. How can I maximize reproduction and growth rates? Is there a magic temperature for that? 4. The most important, what I do if one dies in the tank and I am not able to find it?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 7 жыл бұрын
+stefanos tokatlidis All great questions! As long as the temperature is at least 65 F, I wouldn't supply any type of heating. If it goes below that, I would put a small heat panel on one side. Heat stress would likely be manifested by hiding more and perhaps drinking more. I wouldn't cool the tank to check on them or collect them, it would probably stress them out. Does your setup open on top or on the front? That will tend to change how you deal with opening it for maintenance.For best reproduction, I would recommend the high 70s or up to 80 F. The eggs might hatch even faster at higher temperatures, but would not necessarily be as healthy. With minimalistic decor, it shouldn't be too hard to detect if one were to die in time to remove it before it causes problems. I hope this helps!
@stefanostokatlidis4861
@stefanostokatlidis4861 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the answers. The tank opens from the front. Can I use a flashlight or something similar to scare them back? Or do they stay hidden during the day so no problem? Also, if I put a heat mat on a wall of the tank, what will happen to eggs stuck elsewhere? Currently the tank has minimalistic decore, but I am planning to put more items inside. Not too much, just another hollow cork bark branch because there is only one. I have read that hatchlings have high mortality rates. How common is for someone of the inhabitants to die and for no one to notice? Can invertebrates of the substrate deal with the problem? And talking of invertebrates, instead of using smallish springtails, what will happen if I throw a quantity of bufalo worms inside and wait for them to reproduce? Will the geckos be self-sufficient up to a degree?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 7 жыл бұрын
stefanos tokatlidis I haven't noticed the geckos trying to escape often when I open the door...but I do have to watch for tiny hatchlings hanging around the doorway when I close it. The eggs really don't need a lot of heat...they'll be fine anywhere in the enclosure, but those in cooler areas will just take longer to hatch. I think adding another hiding place is a good idea. In my experience, hatchlings don't have a high mortality rate per se, although the adults will sometimes go after them. Feeding them well will help. I notice that my mourning geckos will eat a,good amount of springtails, so a good layer of leaf litter will help preserve them. I haven't tried buffalo worms as a cleanup crew with them, but my impression is that they might be a bit too much (aggressive breeders and feeders, and they might go after eggs).
@stefanostokatlidis4861

If bufalo worms are terrestrial, how can they access the eggs that are glued on surfaces? Also, aren't springtails too small for the adults?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 7 жыл бұрын
stefanos tokatlidis the buffalo worm beetles, at least, are good climbers, and sometimes the eggs are laid on the undersides of wood and other objects. I initially thought the adults wouldn't go after springtails, but I've seen it happen. : )

Toasty Ghosty interesting question...they are probably too small to be much of a meal for something as large as a blue tongue skink, but i imagine smaller omnivorous reptiles might eat them. If they are ever cracked, the parents will eat them, and once they hatch, they eat the shells, so I imagine various other species would do the same.

There used to be a page with some good photos of the different types, but I can’t seem to find it anymore...
@FragilMind
@FragilMind 5 жыл бұрын
It's pretty easy to figure out. "Type A" are darker and have less defined black contrast spots. "Type B" are those of Hawaiian decent. They are lighter when not flared up and tend to trend towards yellow when not. Obviously each individual is different. If these girls were branded as such, then they are more than likely "Type B." The final type, "Type C" that you refer to are actually "Type B" with black contrast spots in a dual lateral pattern down their backs, where A and B only have a couple black contrast spots near the tops of the shoulder and hips (anywhere from 4 to 8 in total). Hope this helps!

I have 2 MGs and one is a big bully. She’s always chirping at the other one if it comes near her. Recently, she’s gone after the other one and heard them fighting (was scary!). Do you think I should separate them or would adding another MG change the dynamic? It’s a large tank with lots of hiding spots and visual barriers. I have 3 bamboo hides and they sleep in 2 of them during the day. I think the high humidity (PDF tank) and stress is making the bullied one turn a dark brown/purple color. The breeder I got them from said the bully might just be a mean gecko. I know they’re social so I’m leery of separating them since they’ll both be alone
