My mouth is watering thinking of beets that large. I love beets. Sounds as though you've had some fun. Everything you do is worthy. The paper is absolutely lovely. I need to attempt something like that. Our old bbq had a side burner, the one currently doesn't have one. Not sure if you can do it on a regular stove. I would imagine it would be okay. What I need to do is find something to use other than beet juice. LOL Those leaves are gorgeous. Your leaf-cutter ants are quite talented. Have loved seeing some of your current work. The leaves are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! 💚 TIP: I have added a little white vinegar to my beat solution and the color was brighter. I just thought about when you dye Easter Eggs. My Mom always added a little vinegar to the drops of food coloring and I remember her telling me it would set the colors and make them brighter. 💖🤗💖

Hi LorriMarie🙋‍♀. The leaves are so amazing, what talented artists the leaf cutter ants are. Reminded me of stained glass windows. I sometimes spray a solution of vinegar and water 5O/5O on paper when I dye with leaves, rust should help in setting the color , lovely video thank-you. Go well...💚

Hello, LorriMarie! I used canned beets/juice that I placed in a cookie sheet and added three papers at a time, making sure the juice covered all. The paper is a rich pink. The photo doesn't really reveal the true shade. I added coffee crystals to some papers while drying. I love those lacy leaves!

Baking soda can also help to make the colour more intense.

Wow Girl! What an awesome move, it’s been too long!! Years back I tried making wool dyes, one out of prickly pear fruit and one out of beet fruit. The waters were such beautiful colors but became muted the longer I simmered. I never went back to try alum or salt but I’ve always thought, maybe if I didn’t simmer so long. I’m interested to see how that goes for you! Funny story, our prickly pear plant developed an infestation that I couldn’t get rid of so my hubby cut back most of the plant. That worked and we’ve never had that happen again. I was young in my fiber play and had no idea the infestation was cochineal bugs...everywhere! Ha...old, yet young and foolish! red cabbage might give you a stronger color. i've only done it on muslin fabric. i boiled it in white vinegar & water for 40 minutes.

Wow, I love how you have adapted and used whatever is available to create beautiful things. My favorite dye is turmeric, it is always so vibrant, my beet dye was always too pale for my taste, ended up 'redying' them, maybe I will try again sometime. Love your pages.

Hi LorriMarie! Just a thought.... did you leave the greens on when you cooked the beets? That would dull down the color for sure. Those ants are amazing artists! Are they considered invasive or just part if the process of mulching there? Speaking of mulching. We watched a really interesting video on KZfaq about how they experimented with using the cast offs from the orange juice companies in a depleted part of the forest there in CR and within like 10 years they succeeded in naturally regrouping rainforest at a phenomenal rate. I will go find the title in case you and Rob want to watch it and maybe investigate it for yourselves 😊 The video title is : They threw 12,000 tons of orange peelsin a forest. The KZfaq creator I watched was Be Amazed. And I was!!! 😂

Lorrimarie I love to see your art videos!!! Sister remember to try with indigo fabric dye (something like uhm.. for example ''Rit denim blue powder): do you remember the dramatic and exceptional effect I had? (to be added to the water after it has boiled for 1 hour with the paper, leaves, vinegar, rusty iron etc immersed.. after 1 hour add the dye, 1 tbsp.. but you decide how dark you like, look at the color in the water and then boil for 1 hour and a half, wash it and tadàà: done! Love youuuuuuuuu ♥

I saved and used broccoli water to try and dye paper...always hoping for a lovely green colour. It didn't really work and so the next day I added more green vegetable leftover water (mix of spinach, kale, cabbage...) and left it for the day. It still didn't really work, the paper is a very pale. So disappointing for the amount of process. Any tips for getting a good natural green??

Gorgeous leaf pages, LMJ! I saw someone recently use black bean 'juice' to dye paper, and it came out beautifully. You must be able to find black beans in CR, right? Mx
