Welcome to Station Rigs! In this special episode of Heroes Next Door, we're taking you behind the scenes to explore a Mass Casualty Bus that has never been showcased on our channel before. This remarkable rig is an integral part of the Chester County Task Force and is maintained and staffed by the dedicated TowerDirect EMS providers.
What sets this bus apart is its incredible versatility. With the ability to be configured in multiple ways, it's not just your ordinary bus with 18 seats. The Chester County Mass Casualty Bus can swiftly adapt to accommodate wheelchairs or cots suspended from the roof to the floor. This flexibility ensures that it can effectively respond to a variety of emergency situations.
The genesis of this impressive rig traces back to a significant incident in West Chester, Chester County. Following a devastating fire that engulfed a nursing home, the community faced a critical situation where hundreds of residents urgently needed safe transportation. The Mass Casualty Bus was brought into reality to address this pressing need, providing a reliable and efficient means to transport those in need of immediate care and safety.
In this episode, we are honored to have Deputy Chief Stuart Dixon as our guide, taking us on an exclusive tour inside the bus. As Deputy Chief Dixon walks us through, you'll get an up-close look at the various features and capabilities of this remarkable rig. From a ramp designed for hospital stretchers to a lift specifically designed for wheelchairs, this bus leaves no stone unturned in ensuring seamless accessibility. And of course, it also maintains the traditional entryway for those who can walk onto the bus.
Furthermore, we're excited to share that this extraordinary bus is in the process of becoming a QRS (Quick Response Service) unit within the guidelines set by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. This development further enhances its ability to provide prompt and efficient emergency medical services to the community.

Very nice build. Love the thoughtful features to load any type of patient no matter what they are restricted to. Very good!

That is an amazing vehicle. Can certainly see its utility in an MCI situation. I'm just thinking, if there's an incident with dozens of wounded patients, while the ambulances could transport the most critical cases, this could move the 'walking wounded' who might still need hospital attention. Very cool vehicle.

Town by me had a MCI yesterday. In stead of calling a bus, they called for 10 medics

The Barclay fire was an absolute masterclass in scene management by all involved. Middle of winter, pitch dark, and cold... The evacuation that they referenced which was more recent required this unit to travel a good 40min just across the Lancaster County line.

I have never heard of a "mass casualty" bus in North American ever being this tiny!

Cool unit, I’m not in any 1st responder stuff but a last year my town had a lot of rain and the dog shelter flooded and they didn’t have a way to get the dogs out so that had to either walk or carry each dog across the street to the storage locker facilities bc they were nice enough to let them store dogs in there, but because that happened they dog shelter purchased a bus and outfitted it with tie downs for kennels as like a mci for dogs

A great addition to any service, as mass incidents do occur quite often. And the rehab, or welfare as we call it now, only properly starting in 2023.

A great addition. I am surprised that the vehicle is not a low floor vehicle as that would be more accessible to mobility impaired users without over reliance in tail lifts. The reduced height also would resolve a number of the height challenges. For incidents like the nursing home fire having an agreement with local accessible bus operators is another way to ensure that costs are manageable. I would however recommend that should anyone consider this type of vehicle that it should be designed for event use to also help with funding the unit. I like the fact the ramps allow the doors to close however with a lower floor they would be a lot shorter and could fit in a small compartment inside the unit.

This rig reminds me of the County Ambulance Bus that used to be housed around the corner from where I grew up. Very cool unit!

Something similar exists here in Germany as well. We call them "large-capacity ambulances", usually on bus chassis. However, a large-capacity ambulance can also be used very well as a first seat and assembly point for the uninjured (e.g. for residents of a burning house).

Those are not the same, German MCI-Trucks work as completely functioning MICU and are made for treatment. This bus is primarily for transportation and not critically ill patients. In Germany we utilize local bus companies if we need to move people otherwise we call a different MCI category and thus resulting in IFT (BLS) and ALS units. This unit is far below German standard and not even equal this is a glorified "KTW" at best

We sure could have used one of these here in my neck of the woods the other day. Had a bus w/ 30 people rollover on a forestry service road. They had Ambulances from 3 different towns (Closest being 45 minutes or so away) With this, they wouldn't have had to pretty much strip the 3 towns of ambulances....

This type of unit can be invaluable, unfortunately in the UK we barely have any, we tend to set up a emergency field hospital or a series of medical posts to treat casualties pending transport or discharge instead!
