To defend Andy Weir: He was a software developer (engineer), not having any real background in physics or space engineering. He was well aware that storm that can move a rocket can never happen on Mars. Per many of his interviews, he contemplated use different story causing Mark being stranded, such as rocket malfunction during a test. Then he decided for a storm because the story of Martian is fight between a man and the nature and Andy wanted nature to give the first punch. The iron man flight idea was mentioned by Mark in the book, but never realized, as it could never work. If you enjoyed the movie, your are going to love the book (as it always is).

"Melt the Martian Ice Caps"? Wasn't that already Fictionalized in the Original Total Recall movie?! 😏
@taiwanjohn4 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. The polar caps of Mars are made (mostly) of dry ice, so when you melt/vaporize them you get CO2, not breathable air, as depicted in the movie. The 'atmosphere generator' in the movie was some kind of ancient alien technology that could do that sort of thing. (Note: I've only seen the original, not the remake, so maybe they did something different in the new version.) EDIT: BTW, there are other ways to do it. For example, one idea is to find a hardy species of lichen that grows in extremely cold, dry conditions like mountaintops. Then you'd inoculate Mars with these spores, and as the lichens grow, their dark color would lower the albedo of Mars, causing it to absorb more heat from the sun. As the temperature gradually rises, the polar caps will melt naturally. (And as the CO2 concentration rises, you get more greenhouse effect, so it becomes a self-reinforcing cycle of warming and melting.) The down-side however is that this "natural" process would take hundreds of years.
@jebes9090904 жыл бұрын
there was actually a movie from ...the 70s???? where they nuked mars to heat it up and a few astronauts were trapped there running out of air. I have NOOOOO idea what the name of it is. i saw it once when i was like 7 or 8 in the 80's . i believe the idea is you nuke the ice caps, increase the atmospheric co2, that causes a green house effect which raises its temperature and melts all the water under the surface. Also having a thicker atmosphere on mars would help with radiation, and landing space vehicals. And yes mars isnt big enough to retain its atmosphere, but it would last like a 1000 years or so, so for any practical purpose it wouldnt matter.

Since Mars has such a weak magnetic field, we'd have to figure out how to shield ourselves from the increased solar and other cosmic radiation.
@jedaaa3 жыл бұрын
Having half the structure underground would take care of most of it and the domes can be made to filter out the rest letting normal levels of light through, also water is excellent for shielding radiation.
@maddkiller4 жыл бұрын
The problem that no one talks about when talking about terraforming is you have to have a magnetic field around the planet for it to work. the only way to do that would be to create similar conditions from inside the planet to come close to our planets, otherwise the ozone your trying to create would eventually escape, and u would have no protections from radiation. you would need to jump start the core of the planet, hoping it is made of material that can create a magnetic field
@maddkiller4 жыл бұрын
no, he talked about using nukes to melt the ice caps at the poles of mars. nukes can't jump start the core of a planet, well maybe, but it would take more nukes than we could ever produce and chances are it would only destroy the planet or make it even more hostile to human life or life in general. you would have to heat an entire planets core, hoping that it is iron or of a mineral capable of creating a magnetic field, once you heated the core, you would need the core to rotate. if you nuked the surface, it would be like cooking it like a hot pocket, hot as fuck on the surface with an ice cold center. plus that would mean a lot of that energy from the nukes would disperse out into space instead of towards the core like is needed.

The only unrealistic thing in the movie is I believe America would let an astronaut die because it’s too expensive to save him. There’d be a cover up to keep it a secret that he’s alive. I’m surprised that didn’t happen in the movie now that I think about it. 😆

I think it was "hard" sci-fi writer Larry Niven who said something to the effect that we're going to let climate change and pollution go so far that this planet becomes almost unliveable. Then we'll fix it. And the good part of that is we'll know how to "fix" or terraform other planets.

For those wondering, fully terraforming a planet would take a 1000+ years, even if we worked as fast as possible. Also, since terraforming a planet to be as earth-like as possible is inherently destructive, we couldn't live on the planet for those 1000+ of years.
@TheCoatHangers4 жыл бұрын
No shit. You can't put a logical number on it so you therfor say >1000 years when it can even be >10,000 years or >100,000 years. Hence why he said there's no logical number.

@SSky063 жыл бұрын
To be fair, the "Ironman suit" thing was a joke the Damon character makes in the book when it looks like the original plan might not work, but then does end up working. I guess they had to have a more 'Hollywood' ending for the movie instead of "Oh okay, their plan worked, everything is okay" though.

The thing about martian atmosphere is that gravity isn't the problem, it's the lack of an electromagnetic [lapsus] because Mars' core cooled down.

@Dream0Asylum3 жыл бұрын
If Mars could support a substantial atmosphere, it'd have one already. The gravity is too low and the lack of a robust magnetosphere means that even if we did add gas to the climate, that gas would get stripped away just like whatever may have been there before.
