Today we have a real rotary monster from the 80s. A true British exotic, a unique bike in every sense with a rich racing history. This is simply a real rotary heritage.

I can remember being at the TT the year Robert raced them. I was camped near the paddock only to be a wakened from my deep drunken slumber by a factory Norton having its balls revved clean off on the Micron dyno... Best alarm clock ever..Fantastic..

Thanks for reminding me of these. I saw two of the racers doing demonstration laps against a pair of Marlboro Yamaha 500s. The sound was incredible! 😱 The rotary racer lives on in a way as Brian Crighton still produces a modernised version, the CR700, which is available to buy, if you have deep enough pockets. I saw a video recently of Guy Martin testing one out on track and the exhaust note still gives you goosebumps.

Thank you. I saw one in the flesh, for the first time a few weeks ago. It was stunning. I badgered my dad to take me to brand's hatch to see Steve Spray and Trevor Nation do the demo. I have/had a picture of them both on the rear wheel, very grainy but an actual photo. Rocket Ron at Donnington was great to see it with the 500s Hizzy on the isle of man against Foggy was epic

Even the top manufacturers tried to have it classed as a 1200cc instead of a 600cc , which it was , because it blizted them all on the track

It is more complicated, the stated displacement in Wankel engines is not equivalent to that of a piston engine: each rotor has three sides and each side performs a separate cycle as if it were a cylinder in a conventional engine, so you could also say that the displacement is 294 x 3 sides x 2 rotors = 1764. Even this number is inadequate to compare Wankel and conventional engines because it does not take into account the rotor speed which is a third of that of the engine and penalises the Wankel. Taking into account the speed of the rotor and that therefore 3 revolutions of the engine are needed to make the 3 cycles (1 per side), we obtain that it should not be compared to a 1764cc 6-cylinder because the number of useful phases per revolution is the same as a 4-cylinder 4-stroke 1176cc or a 2-cylinder 2-stroke 588c

A friend had an ex-police version of this retro fitted with exhaust/intake scavenger and run rich a certain mr haslam remarked that is was just like the track bike if he ran it with the choke out................

@@trisrush9155 Indeed it was sweet but you would need to fill up every 40miles both oil and petrol mixy .... those were the days!

I seem to remember he cut away the intake tract till he got the carb up snug and thenit ran smooooth!

There was one that lived down the road from me. Massive fairing, big air cooling fins, and the top box and panniers, nothings like the F1 I adored…
@PikestntАй бұрын
I had one too. Amazingly, the “ejector” exhaust took power from ~85bhp up to ~115bhp without any other mods. Basically, it massively cooled the air going into the carbs. Yeah, 40mpg is about right but I didn’t get thru that much Shell Rotella oil.

Stupid ai, "588cc 2 cylinder rotary engine ". 🙄

Its somewhat confusion how racing officials could not come to terms to correctly work out the cubic capacity of the Norton hence banning it from a lot of races, was it because it was too successful? I remember years ago Owen Greenwood found a loophole in the rules for sidecars, and used the mini with its front wheel drive to 2 wheels and just one wheel at the back and won everything for ages till it was banned.
