Lovely inspiring video. Thank you. May I ask was Merton your college of choice or were you allocated to Merton? Asking as I am planning to apply for PPE at Oxford & am intrigued about Merton college after watching the virtual open day tour recently but intimidated to put it as my choice of college because of its reputation of taking the strongest candidates only.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I was actually pooled to Merton (I applied to St Johns). I would not worry too much about the reputation, as all colleges should be equally difficult to get into. Instead, focus on things like location, facilities, and culture to help you choose.

Is PPE math heavy? I am a student from India and have taken Arts stream which comprises of History, Political Science, Economics and Sociology as main subjects. What would be my chance of getting in and surviving PPE at Oxford? Also, I heard the intensity of math differs from college to college. Can you tell which are the colleges that doesn't have too much math?

For the Economics of PPE, a good level of maths can be helpful. However, there is additional support available for those whose maths skills are less strong. I do not believe that the intensity of maths differs from college to college meaningfully.

Doing PPE at Oxford would be my absolute dream, my a level predictions are good (aaa*) and I’m doing an EPQ in my 2nd year. If you don’t mind me asking how good where you’re GCSEs mine are okay but not that great and I could’ve done better if they weren’t teacher predicted, would this make me less likely to be accepted. Also I really appreciate this video as it’s really useful

Thanks so much Ewan, glad you enjoyed the video! Oxford does give quite a bit of importance to GCSEs (the more top grades the better), but good A level predictions (which you have) and a strong TSA score can make up for slightly weaker GCSE grades. Oxford will also take into account the unusual circumstances of this cohort’s GCSES.

Hi Cam, Oxford advise for PPE choosing Maths and History for two of your options. Economics is a popular choice for your third A Level because it will introduce you to the key concepts and models involved in first year economics at PPE. Alongside this, I’d select one other subject that you believe you would perform strongly at. Good options include natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology), geography and modern languages. Oxford care about your A level predictions so it’s important to perform well in Year 12.

Do you think I should apply next year ( currently in year 12)? For GCSEs I got 4,5,5,6-5,6,6,7,7 and my uni admissions teacher told me I shouldn’t bother even if I do get good enough predicted grades next year. I really want to do ppe at Oxford but I’ve always been a middle set student. I currently do Economics, Geography and Computer science

Hi! Though your GCSE grades might not be has high as other applicants, I would still give it a shot. Oxford take into account contextual information when looking at your grades (eg how good your grades are in comparison to other students at your school). Oxford also give high priority to predicted A level grades and your TSA score, so working really hard on these (and you have plenty of time!) could compensate as well. Best of luck with your application!

Hi, I want to study PPE at the Oxford University in the Future, do you have some recommendations about choosing what A-level subjects for study PPE in the university?
@unireachuk
@unireachuk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thought there are no compulsory subjects, Maths and History are typically recommended. History here could be swapped for another essay subject. For the third (and perhaps fourth), I’d pick subject(s) you enjoy and are confident that you’ll do well at.

@@unireachuk Hi, Thank you for your replies, how do you think about this choice for A level(math, politics, economics, physics)
@unireachuk
@unireachuk 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think this sounds like a sensible choice. Maths is a must. Economics is a very solid and common choice. In my view, History would be preferred over Politics as it is typically regarded as a more respected/difficult essay subject. History would prepare you very well for the kinds of essays you would do studying PPE at Oxford. Physics is a great choice, as long as you feel confident that you can do well at.

@@unireachuk Hi, thank you very much for your replies, I am wondering that is the A-level politics are related to the politics in the politics in PPE? are they similar, or do they have some remarkable differences?
@unireachuk
@unireachuk 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about A level politics to answer this. Looking briefly through the specification, there are similarities in content. However, you can pick up a lot of this knowledge from reading introductory texts. For Oxford, it is more important that you are able to think intelligently about a problem that you haven’t seen before than have a lot of existing knowledge. You can build up this ability from researching widely in PPE and (deeply in your areas of interests) independently, and practicing thinking critically about and discussing the ideas involved.
