I though Rob said something really powerful in this video. At around 16:39 he says "The guys are giving it their all. It's not enough time to be honest. They're new to managing a project because I'm finally just not doing it. They're realizing that they have to prioritize certain things." In the past he has talked about how hard he and the team is working and how little sleep he gets, but he always left finished the statement in a positive light. Whether the positivity was in the form of praising the work of his team or showing off some new top of the line part they are going to use, he always made it seem like they are doing just as good of a job as if they had more time. It seems to me though that they really aren't. The first case I really noticed was when they had to fill in the those massive gaps on the mounting rails for the smooth bottom. This seemed to be just a mistake from cutting quickly and trying to save time. The lack of time really came to a head thought when building up the engine. Rob was down to the wire on time and couldn't find the rest of the dowels for the third rotor, so he just put in the two that he had and ran with it. This significantly reduces the durability and power-making-potential of the engine. These actions show how the team is rushed on time and really is cutting corners to get it done. I think that it has been obvious to all that have been following the build that this has been the case, but up until now Rob hasn't said anything about it. Today, though, Rob actually said aloud that they are running low on time and the car could be done better. I thought that this was super brave as it breaks the character of "Rob Dahm". That character never really admits something could be done better until there is something new and exciting to replace it with. Until then he doesn't mention it or only has praise for it. The other part that I though was brave was admitting that the team could be better and also saying that Rob isn't doing it all. It's not exact what it means in this case, but it could mean all the work or managing on smaller items, not just setting the larger vison. Both of possibilities reflect well on Rob. They mean that he is delegating work to others and letting go of some control on his projects which on projects, like this one, that mean a lot is very hard to do and admirable. Completely unrelated, but also super cool was Isaiah talking about the struggles of going from the sole maker to being a manager of many other makes and how it is hard to communicate a good idea in your head to all the other people. He also talked about how when that communication breaks down the project doesn't get done the way that you were envisioning and that it feels like it would be easier to do it yourself.

I mean that’s not why the Mercedes flipped and shouldn’t be an issue with robs car. That being said he really should focus more on front aero. Titanium sparks white because it burns extremely fast and extremely hot. As titanium breaks down into particulates it becomes more combustible with the right mix of oxygen and can burn up to 3300°C. I do titanium 3D printing and have to take a lot of preventative fire measures depending on what I’m doing with the stuff. We use it as a blasting media and it has caused a flash fire in our cabinets before. Alloy printing is a lot of fun!

I think the front splitter down force explanation was awesome... simple but that was a good perspective of what is actually happening
@SargentSam
@SargentSam 6 күн бұрын
It was more or less completely wrong though. Diffusers do not generate downforce, and they certainly do not decrease the density of the air. Diffusers actually increase the pressure of the air by slowing it down, which makes the splitter or under tray it's attached to more effective (the splitter/tray is generating downforce because air under it is faster, therefore lower pressure). A diffuser on its own will do basically nothing.

Putting the wing that far back is going to cause it to have a huge lever arm and produce a torque about rear wheel, lifting the entire front end up. Already the car will be rear bias since pikes peak is up hill. This car will understeer like a mac truck and make those ohlins worthless. Unless you can get such high front downforce you can balance the moment, then ballance the rear force. Drag on the wing will also contribute to the moment via mounting height albeit less so. If u leave the wing there i would trim it to absolute minimum. Don't trust me though just do the math.

@@mikaeltorres2746 ya sort of got an idea with the shock pot data. Could have done the math pre wing mounting though to make sure balance would be good. If the wing mount was more forward the force could go right into the tires.

If you need to mig a gap and the material is thin, use a copper plate/flat/ bar at the back to stop fall away.. it will help you get a smooth finish on one side and nice bead on the other, 5-6mm gap is the limit, smaller will work a treat. Also counter sink the screws (Aircraft skin style) so the road and curbs don’t shear off the heads compromising the plates adherence to the underside of the car.

Here I was expecting to see more carbon skinning the bottom - instead they built a full length skid plate LOL

for the underbody panels look into ACM panels. (aluminum skinned hollow core) It's what lightweight aluminum trailer skins are made from. Send Cut Send will also cut and supply it to you (not sure in large enough pieces though...) For areas that are going to "hit", you should look into Tegris (laminated woven PP - Milliken material)

Counter sinking the screws on the flat floor would help reduce drag and use silicone or sika to fill in the holes or edges and sand it flat n smooth helps as well

Next time, the front diffuser overlaps the plate behind it. That will prevent incoming air from catching the flat bottom and opening it up, which it will at speed. General rule, plates in front cover the edge of the plates behind.

Hey, Rob... You should talk to Keeps about a sponsorship deal where you grow your hair out long and they pay you X amount per inch per month. FYI, having had long hair and short hair, long hair is a lot less hassle. You just tie it back and go to work. No hair shmoo, no blow drier.

Upside to the thick flat bottom is you have major protection for the chassis and all the sensitive stuff in case of gravel spinouts and other accidents.

When you're not crunching time, you could take the thick aluminium panels, a router, a carbide router bit (flat bottom cutter) and cut triangle pockets, leaving only a thin metal between the reinforcements. That would lighten it up without losing too much structure, thus requiring more material for ribs. All you need is a plywood pattern with an oversized dorito hole for the router to pick up on and cut on a flat surface.

Yo, check out alumalite for your flat bottom. It's basically aluminum cardboard made with two thin sheets of aluminum with corrugation between the layers. It's super light and very stuff for that weight, plus pretty cheap for what it is. It's widely used for sign making, so in theory large sheets are easy to get from local sign shops. I've heard of lots of people using it for flat bottoms in the grassroots motorsports circles. Definitely worth checking out!

You can also add a small duckbill spoiler to the rear edge of the trunk lid(rear aero setup like the rear of a Daytona Prototype) that will drive the diffuser even harder than that high mount wing will and possibly(probably?) allow you to run even less rear wing angle for less drag for a given amount of total rear downforce. Definitely not 'necessary' of course, but it's also an easy addition in the future if you wanted, solid low hanging fruit for some aero optimization(assuming time attack rules allow for a rear wing and spoiler). Can't wait to see this thing running up the mountain!

Hear me out... electronic pressure gauge on the brake line close to the pedal > pressure gauge sends signal to an actuator > actuator opens or closes the angle of the wing based on brake pressure.

Ran a 11 minute lap. In 95 two guys in Rx7's ran a 10:15 & 10:18 up the peak so he finished but wasn't that fast compared to 30 year's ago Rx7's. His is awesome but id like to see it more after fine tuning.
