An attempt to recreate the buckler boss currently in the Nathalie P. and Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium at Jamestown, Virginia. As one of the thousands of artifacts discovered in the course of the Jamestown Rediscovery archaeological project, this piece is significant in its connection both to early American Colonial history and the history of Renaissance European armour. More information on this piece can be found at www.historicjamestowne.org/ and at my website: www.crescentmoonarmoury.net.

@Sheep_ewe: Most colonial European armour in the Americas was from the late 16th/early 17th centuries and features open faces helmets (morions & cabasets). However there have been close helms and armets discovered in and around the Virginia site of Jamestown. This is an excellent book that gives good details of the arms and armour being used in the early English colonies: books.google.com/books/about/Virginia_Colonial_Militia_1651_1776.html?id=3iriXCOOzbIC

Interesting, i am just curious, but what was the exact function of the original cows pat on that buckler? Was it only decorative or had it also a tecnical, functional role?

I'm thinking, from personal buckler use, that it would be a very effective offensive augmentation to the buckler. It would not pierce like a blade, but would cause significant blunt force trauma and could pierce and kill with a blow to an un-armoured head.

Parker Brown Sorry for my English... Aha, very interesting, that explains the strange design of the "bowl" and the rounded tip, guess thats becas it not get stuck in things so easily i guess. I dont hawe expertis use on bucklers but i hawe made a few so i think i understand the basic princip of use. As i remembe the armour types found in US was often later types with open or semiclosed helmets made/inspired by the Spanish armoury wich i guess explains this design in close combat. (guess that´s becase of the use of early firearms during that period wich demands better sight than a full closed helmet i guess (at least from what i hawe seen from earth finds here outside US i guess had the same origin.).
