Halas reflects on the founding of the NFL and his Chicago Bears. Anecdotes include his short stint with the NY Yankees, when he faced Walter Johnson and had a run-in with Ty Cobb. Red Grange and George Allen provide added insight.

Long ago, i read a story where the Bears were playing the Packers. Before the game, Halas marched into the Packers locker room-by himself, walked up to Vince Lombardi, looked him right in the face, and said: "Coach, I hope you have your players ready today, because we're gonna kick your ass." Then, he walked out in silence. Can anyone corroborate this story??? Either way, I fuckin' love it.

There’s interviews with Vince Lombardi telling you the exact incident. I have seen the comments Vince makes in several nfl films on KZfaq. I think one was about the Bears 1963 season

why the hell is the super bowl trophy not named after him. Lombardi was a coach. A damned good coach. But Halas was the NFL and a damned good coach.
@jamridd143 жыл бұрын
Probably because when the super bowl was first created, the Bears wasn’t very good. The last championship the bears won before SB 20 was in 63. When super bowl 1 came, that was 1967 and George Halas last year as head coach of the bears. The bears wasn’t that good the first few Super Bowls. After the bears won in 1963, they went 9-5 in 1965, probably their best record since the 63 championship but missed the playoffs, and the bears haven’t sniffed the playoffs again until 1977. The Packers had won the last few NFL championships and they won the first few Super Bowls under Vince Lombardi so i can understand why the Super Bowl trophy was named after him. Plus Lombardi died in 1970, Halas died in 83. So i guess it made more sense to name the Super Bowl trophy after Lombardi because he won more than anyone at the point. But the NFC championship trophy is named after George Halas

@@unclebobunclebob I agree with you bro. When i was coming up, i used to ask people the same thing. I thought the super bowl trophy should be the Halas trophy, and the Lombardi should be the NFC championship trophy. Halas bears still had the most championships in the league at that point

I’m pretty sure the trophy didn’t have a name and so whoever won the first super bowl got to name it, because the packers won it it’s called the Lombardi trophy

Fran Tarkington in his book from the 1970s said that when the Vikings beat the Bears in their very first game 37-13 that George Halas called the Vikings a bunch of pussies.

Didn't know he had an Eastland ticket. Yikes Different world 100 years ago, baseball & football teams established by Industrial Age giants for promotion & entertainment of workers/families in pre-TV era, written off like my Mom's Rockford employer wrote off her softball team. How or even why they kept going while losing money through WW 2 is beyond me, unless they knew TV technology was coming. Have also heard the GI Bill introduced football millions of returning veterans.
