A Restaurant Apocalypse Is Starting To Sweep Across America & That Is Bad News For The U.S. Economy

You just have to look around and see what's happening to the restaurants in your area to understand that the U.S. economy is headed in the wrong direction. When the economy is booming, restaurants are full and chains open more locations to expand their business. But when the economy is struggling, restaurants get increasingly emptier, and underperforming locations go belly up. Sadly, it seems that a "restaurant apocalypse" has started to sweep across the country this year.
Faced with higher living expenses, most households have very little discretionary income to spend as a result of inflated prices, and that's particularly true for our young adults.
Americans love to eat out, but these days about 60% are living paycheck to paycheck, and report experiencing financial distress. Without the extra dollars to spend at the end of each month, people are consuming less, and many sectors are hurting. The restaurant industry is being disproportionately hard hit by this trend.
According to data from Placer.ai, visits to sit-down restaurants were down nearly five percent in the past year. People just can't afford to dinner out as much as they once did.
Consequently, we're witnessing a wave of restaurants closings that is growing larger all over the nation. Even in the Big Apple, many famous restaurants are being shut down.
Despite being known for its great fining spots, New York City has been facing a major decline in foot traffic in recent years. From December 2023 to January 2024 alone, more than 40 big restaurants and bars were shut down, with some owners saying business simply never picked up after COVID lockdowns in 2020.

High prices for everything have severely affected my plan. I'm concerned if people who went through the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am having now. The stock market is worrying me as my income has decreased, and I fear I won't have enough savings for retirement since I can't contribute as much as before.

It's recommended to save at least 20% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 20% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of investing in the stock market and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. I researched and found a licensed advisor who diligently helped grow my reserves despite inflation. Consequently, my reserves increased from $275k to around $750k.

I did a couple years back and lost 40 lbs (only meant to lose 30 but got in the habit of eating far less), and greatly improved my metabolism. For 40+ years I ate fast food because it was both cheap and convenient and I was busy. But it's no longer cheap (or even reasonable) for most fast food, and being retired really changes the "busy" picture.

If our government worked for the people the tuition wouldn’t ever have become so high and people could save for business ventures and other things like college. I grew up with family dinners. Nobody went to a restaurant, it was too expensive in the 60's for us. Chinese food was kinda affordable for once in a while for some people. Then came fast food joints. It changed everybody's life. The science of making it taste good, better than all those untrained cooks raising a family. So everyone quit mom's food forever. Chef's and kids cooking at fast food took over. People went because with no family at the table it was too lonely and too much kitchen work to eat at home. The junk food industry increased people's appetites. Food obscession was everywhere and everyone got fat avoiding the kitchen at home. Kids loved it and hated home cooked meals. Flavor and ingredients designed for addiction, took over appetites. Now everyone is fat all because they opened up a junk food industry that was part of destroying families.

McDonald's is a reality company. They make their money from rent paid to them from owner operators which makes up tof 80% of stores. Store owners pay them 20 % of income on rent, around 20-25% to staff then there is food cost, utilities, insurance, etc. Really one store doesn't make that big of a profit. So yes when wages go up the profit goes down. Think of it like this. Say you make about 2000 A month and after you pay out everything you are banking only 10% of what you make.

Eating at a chain the money is local and then there are stockholders and upper managment that have to get paid also. There are just too many needing to get paid from the price of meals without raising prices to the point it isn't worth it anymore.

As an outsider I have got reports from many Americans for almost a year who have told me about this storm of restaurants bankruptcy that is sweeping across the country. Not only the restaurants are closing down but the supermarkets are getting emptier and companies are shortening working weeks just to keep their heads above water by reducing expenses. This scenario has been expected as the usa government has no structural plan to stimulate the economy, but doing the opposite by increasing import tariffs which will trigger inflation again.

@@les0101s hahaha, according to a documentary the “obesity” is caused by a virus in hamburgers and “fast food”. These viruses do not die when the meat is fried on hot plates. But, your observation is correct that Americans tend to be obese. However, this “American disease” is not caused by too much eating but by viruses. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Exactly 💯👍 We've been falling into the slippery slope from the time of the 2008 decline. And prior to this, the market crashed in 1998. Many folks in that time had to refinance and or live on their credit cards to make payments while quickly seeking another job position. Once you lose a job and out of work for over six months, it is damn near impossible to return to being on top of your bills. The American empire is witnessing its end.

@@Lady_A.R.Browne yeah because 08 wasn't really the crash, it was an announcement that there was a problem. 98 yeah, I can say that by the time 98 rolled around it was obvious that the stooge so called middle class over spent and was using the house as a credit card. They had already refinanced 4 times as a means of blowing money. The credit panic of 2000 was basically an admission that it's game over. I remember late night TV back in 99-2006 they was selling lists of foreclosed homes. Yeah 08 was just an announcement because, they couldn't cover up the fact it had crashed out long time ago, we could argue 98 or 2000 it's pretty much pick a number, but most should definitely see it was crashed out in 04 at the latest. It's amazing how they the system keeps people in the dark. Of course they willingly stay stupid because most don't wanna make waves, they've got to be superficial carbon copies of all their superficial know nothing dumbass fake friends. It's not the middle class of the 50's thru the 79's via our grand parents era (if you're Gen x or millennial) What made our grand parents and great grandparents middle class was simply they was savers not spenders. They didn't buy into the bullshit of spending to save. Aka rewards programs aka points programs. The stamp programs at grocery stores was common but what I mean, is simply they'd be the first to tell you that in order to get the free speedway hot dog and drink you had to spend x amount meaning it's not really free but rather a postponed paid in advance purchase. So it's pretty much. NO THANK YOU, I'LL BUY HOT DOGS AT THE GROCERY STORE. of course I've always been this wa but of course I'm just negative or so I'm told. Bottom line is simply, get to the 89's the elder boomers started earn a more serious wage, and BING right to the skull it went. Retailers sold them on the bullshit lie of convenience. They went with the STFU and blindly pay the price and ignore the fact the item isn't worth 50% of what you're being charged. Bend the fuck over it's convenient! Then they wonder where all that inflation that wasn't caused by the government via the house of Representatives came from!!! They brought up some Gen-Xers most 70's kids and of course millennials via 80's onwards. Then they wonder why did the Gen xers get foreclosed on right alongside those irresponsible boomers who it turns out cannot handle money for shit. But then oh 07 but definitely by 2010 the propaganda blasting out said the whole world is the millennials fault. HOW, I WAS 23 IN 08, THE OLDEST MILLENNIAL IN 08 WAS 27 THE YOUNGEST WAS 12! THE FUCKIN MAJORITY WAS BETWEEN JR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL AND HAD ZERO SKIN IN THE GAME! LIKE TODAY PEOPLE WANNA DICKWAG ABOUT THE GEN Z. CLAIMING THEY VOTED THIS OR THAT WAY. IT'S BULLSHIT SIMPLY BECAUSE THE MAJORITY ARE STILL IN SCHOOL. POINT IS SIMPLY YOU KNOW TGE WORKD IS FUCKED UP WHEN GENERATION NAMES BECOME A BUZZ TERM GRUMPY OLD USE TO BITCH ABOUT PEOPLE. YOU KNOW THE DIVIDE IS REAL, THE SYSTEM HAS PEOPLE MANIPULATED AND BRAINWASHED ESPECIALLY WHEN IT PLACES THOSE SAID ELDERS ON A PEDESTAL IF NOT A HIGH HORSE. YEAH I SAY TO THEM, FUCK YOU (NOT YOU SPECIFICALLY) IT IS YOUR MAKING, YOUR PROBLEM NOT OURS, WE DIDN'T TELL YOU PEOPLE TO FUCK AND THROW US HERE, SO KEEP YOUR SHITTY JOBS WITH SHIT PAY. KEEP YOUR OVERPRICED SQUARE BOXES AND OVERPRICED DUMPY ASS APARTMENTS. WE'D RATHER BE HOMELESS AND DO NOTHING THAN FEED THE MACHINE. 39 HERE BORN AND RAISED IN THE COUNTRYSIDE I DON'T NEED YOUR FAKE JOBS AND BULLSHIT MONEY. We don't eat out at all anymore. When it was affordable it was still a luxury and we seldom ate out but now that things are too expensive, we just quit restaurants altogether. Pizza was a sore point for me, I love pizza more than anyone I know and the cheapest local pizzeria sells a large 2 topping pizza for $28.25 after taxes so I would seldom order a pizza even though I'd love to eat pizza all the time. That hurt. What solved the problem was a pizza stone. My missus went out and bought one for about $30 and it makes a pizza as good or better than commercial for about 5 bucks. The missus makes the dough and I do the assembly work and now I can afford to have delicious commercial quality pizza anytime I want and I just love it. I also love that I can put on too much pepperoni and cheese and mushrooms and not get charged a lot extra for it. If you love pizza, I'd absolutely recommend a pizza stone, they are freakin' awesome and will save you tons of money.
