The Super Mario series is the greatest franchise in gaming. With games like New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party, and even Mario Strikers, there is something for everyone. My favorite Mario games are the 3D platformers. Super Mario Odyssey being my favorite in the series. Everyone remembers Super Mario 64, Sunshine, the Galaxy games, and even 3D World. Super Mario 3D Land however, is often overlooked. Perhaps because it's on the Nintendo 3DS. In this retrospective, we'll be taking a look at the first handheld 3D Mario!

Indeed. I really don’t understand the slander this game gets. It’s a fun time. The worst 3D Mario is indeed one of the best Mario Games.

Hot take: I enjoyed this game more then 64. I finished 64 a few months ago and it’s honestly pretty overrated. Sure 3D land may be generic, but the game is very playable and fun. And if you think the game is so “easy” try to beat the game without the tanooki suit. This game holds such a special place in my heart, it was one of my first Mario games. 3D land deserves more attention, it’s such an underrated game!

The best part about 3D Land is the 8 whole worlds of remixed levels after you beat the game.

3D Land was my very first 3DS game and I love it with all my heart. I love the inclusion of the Mario Drawing Song. It's like a love letter to Flipnote Studio and brings back those fond memories. The fact that it has any kind of negative reputation astounds me.

Super Mario 3D Land is easily the best 3DS game I've ever played, and the amount of hours my child self put into it (and the few my adult self put into it) are proof of my love of this title.

Bowser was doing some raking and decided to dump His leaves into the Mushroom Kingdom, thus starting Super Mario 3D Land. Oh wait this is a Mario game in the 2010s. Nope Nevermind, Bowser take Peach, Mario save Peach then Mario get cake from Peach.

I remember starting crying as a kid because I realized that I reached world 8 in 2 days, but when the New 8 world showed up, I was freakin happy

This game holds the most special place deep in my heart. This was my first ever video game that i got with my 3ds. I was 7 when i played through it and to this day i still pick it up every few months. Its undoubtedly fun however old you are and brings out my inner child whenever i boot it up. Thank you for being my first game 3d land. Thank you for being my childhood

I see 3D Land as a prototype for what was seen in 3D World: Taking the concept of 2-D platforming and giving it a 3-D spin. As such, 3-D Land is more of a “proof of concept” type of game that falls in the same area of games you mentioned before, being Wii Sports and Nintendo Land: Early system launch titles meant to sell others in the concept of the system.

I'm not sure if you used a capture card or a certain fruit to get clean 3DS footage but that 3DS border was definitely a nice touch and I appreciate the high production value!

As far as Mario 3D Land is concerned, I wouldn't necessarily call it a "bad" game by any means.

Definitely had fun beating it 100% twice. Honestly the only thing I didn't really like is having to beat every level as both Mario and Luigi but, beating Special 8-👑 definitely felt like an accomplishment after everything was said and done.

I'm glad you called out the inexcusable lack of effort Nintendo took with the boss encounters, but I was surprised to hear the music get a free pass when so many tracks are reused from Galaxy (but I agree the main theme is catchy at least).

I love how when you beat the game, the literally another game to play, the special worlds that a bit more challenging. But I guess this makes up for there only being like 5 levels per world now that I think about it.

3D Land was my first 3D Mario i've ever played. It holds a special place in my heart because i had a lot of fun with it as a child. Same with New Super Mario Bros Wii
