F.E.A.R. is 2005's classic shooty-spooky extravaganza made by prolific developer Monolith. It's about a not-MTF going to not-seattle to deal with a not-SCP containment breach. You play as the unnamed Point Man, a member of F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon). F.E.A.R. is a special division of Delta Force made for dealing with the supernatural, which in this case is a rogue psychic named Paxton Fettel and his army of replica soldiers. Along the way you'll be haunted by Alma, a mysterious little girl who seems to be linked to all of this.
F.E.A.R. has an off history since it jumped back and fourth between developers between games thanks to a buyout and the intellectual property being broken up for a bit. The quality of the games and expansions can very greatly between releases thanks to this and there are two entirely different timelines thanks to this. Viviendi tried their best but F.E.A.R. is Monolith's creation.

It's a shame that all these years later FPS games haven't evolved beyond F.E.A.R.,even many technical aspects such as lighting, AI, voice callouts and environmental effects. Back in 2005 one would've expected 2020 games to be practically alien technology yet we're still stuck with the old, just with nicer coats of paint, higher resolution textures and better shaders.

I mean, many technically have, but the issue is that part of what made FEAR's ai great was the level and audio design. While Fear's levels are a bit bland and empty looking, it helped make sure that anything that could mess up the ai's pathfinding was either nonexistent or very unlikely to cause problems. The same can not be said for a lot of modern games today.

@@Hriskataaa It WAS originally going to be named just Project Origins because the original developers lost the rights to the FEAR name. Funny enough a lot of people (including myself) think Extraction Point is the better Expansion Pack than Perseus Mandate. I'll be the first to say that Extraction Point wasn't perfect, but to me it felt a bit more polished than Perseus Mandate on at least a few areas. Although the introduction of a 4th Faction into the mix the Nightcrawlers was kinda interesting, specially in how eerily calm they are when all the supernatural bullshit happens when compared to Delta Force, the ATC Security team and even The Replicas themselves are freaking out and dying to it the Nightcrawlers never really raise their voice to anything bigger than just calm radio chatter. and I did have some fun with the lightning gun and the new assault rifle, parts of Perseus Mandate felt like they went on for too long, especially the mine section. but when all is said and done if you prefere Perseus Mandate that's fine, I'm not gonna say like "you have no taste" or stuff like that since I also had my fun with it so I can see where you are coming from. although there are somethings I want to clarify. F.E.A.R. isn't part of Delta Force it is it's own division in the US Army with Delta acting as backup for them, the Team in the 2nd Game, callsign Dark Signal if I remember correctly, are a part of Delta Force not F.E.A.R.

He is free to have his preferences BUT as soon as he starts just talking out of his ass he kinda stops having having that credibility as a reviewer(on the topic of F.E.A.R expansions)and devolves into 12-year-old ranting. FEAR 1 and its expansions get at least one playthrough a year from me. I mostly agree about the shotgun; it turns my dick into a rhinocerous horn when it fires, but I hate the sense of anticlimax when it gibs an enemy. I'd rather have bitchin' ragdolls every time. On another note, I've developed a minor headcanon that Point Man's "reflexes" are actually a manifestation of a very short-range precognitive ability. Makes more sense to me than just "Oh your mom was Satan so I guess you can think fast real good"

I disagree with you when it comes to F.E.A.R Extraction Point. As for level design it is more varied than the main game, it makes significant improvements to AI(more on that later),ramps up the horror and opressive atmosphere and it does not fuck with the story(presenting a smaller and more hopeless escape story). As for Perseus mandate: it was fun because it still had F.E.A.R gameplay, it was ugly as fuck, tried to tell an ambitious but poorly executed story and is overall fine. AI: you kind of neglected what really makes the AI special when compared to anything else on the market. Fear: the AI's goal is to eliminate the threat and not just the player. This means that when the individual is threatened by a grenade or gunfire his primary objective becomes survival(Extraction point improves this). I also see it as wierd that you rant about vivendi "not getting it" when monolith completely abandoned everything that made F.E.A.R good when it came to F.E.A.R 2. The enemies were retarded,ALL the guns were weak, the lighting was no longer anything special and the horror was basically gone. Conclusion: As it stands I consider F.E.A.R Extraction Point the pinnacle(gameplay wise) of first person shooters. Change my mind.

I never felt that the (first) game was outwardly scary enough for something literally called "FEAR" -- oh, sure, there's the spooky Sadako-lite segments, but the office buildings and clone army seem kinda dry. Imagine if Dead Space was marketed as horror, but instead of Necromorphs on the Ishimura you spend 90% of the game fighting The Covenant on the station from Prey 2017. Oh, I'm sure the game is fun -- I just remember this being a little off-putting.

It's interesting you don't like Extraction Point as much as Perseus Mandate. Most FEAR reviews I've come across say the opposite, and having played them I feel the same. To me, once you revisit FEAR or move onto it's expansions, the horror loses it's edge and the game becomes a John Woo film simulation (which is a good thing). I always felt the levels of Extraction Point felt more like the core game's in terms of layout, which helps keep the combat high-octane, while in Mandate you're fighting in a lot more open areas where the AI ironically has less room to shine and just gets really tanky to compensate.

In some of my favorite FPS games, a shotgun would act more like a medium-range rifle than they would a force cannon. Certain shotguns can be the latter, but I don't like when some games say they HAVE to be short range only, hence why I am proud of the Doom shotguns and the Combat Evolved shotgun. And that's what I love about the shotgun in the first FEAR; even if you're a few yards away, you can still decimate the Replica Soldiers into gore. They can call it a VK-12, but it's really a SPAS 12 in all but name. And maybe the SPAS 12 isn't this awesomely cruel.

My biggest mistake playing the first F.E.A.R. was trying to play it like a horror game with cover-shooter sensibilities; it is at its best if you play it on max difficulty so the Replicas' aggression and tactics force you to be creative with your gunplay, whether it's shooting your own grenades to make sure they don't dodge-roll, slide-tackling dudes so you stay under cover while doing damage, or constantly remaining on the move so they don't flank you because they *will.* Play it like a fast-paced shooter, but smart.

Fear 3 is a shame. The costco and the appartments had me clued to the screen, clinching my butt in fear. But as you said, those parts are 10% of the game and the rest is boring/frustrating because many parts are simply not made for a single player and downright unfair. But those 2 great levels showed that they had the skill/potential to make a proper fear game.

FEAR is one of the few games where the light having no battery life makes sense. my real life rifle light only gets like 15 minutes of full power per charge heh. bit longer on low power.

I know Fear 3 kinda sucked, but I still had an absolute blast having a goofy playthrough with my BF. using the slow mo at the right time when they were in a pinch just to give them the slow motion even though I wasn't really in a good spot to make use of it. The co-op was surprisingly effective at generating a ton of fun for me. And many inside jokes were made that day. Good times.

It only took me about 30 minutes into the game to find out that Alma is not good for the health of those replica super soldiers. Notice that whenever she appears, there isn't a replica in sight.

Extraction point was actually pretty good. The scary bits were scarier, the shoty bits were shootier. Main problem was the lack of story development. IMO FEAR doesn't really get bad till FEAR 2

Awesome video. I loved the first and second games, it's really unfortunate that production and development of this series was rocky and turbulent, particularly because this series kept getting passed on to different creative teams so it hurt the overall product. Day 1's F3AR was the final nail in its coffin, and it's been dead ever since. I keep hoping, even after all these years, that they'll give FEAR 1 the Resident Evil 2 treatment, with an amazing remaster, but that is just a total fantasy. RIP FEAR franchise, except for F3AR (there are just no excuses).

Shotguns irl are effective at, like, 25 meters. Meanwhile, they can't hit something more than 5-meter away in video games (for balancing reasons, of course, but it's bizarre, still)
