When I listened to "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra, it instantly went on my "happy playlist". I am so taken back by the upbeat energy and message that ELO presents, I had to get them back on my list again. What am I in for with this one?
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Electric Light Orchestra performing "Turn To Stone" for the first time.

There's a phrase I came up with a while back and have been spreading around various reaction channels: Michael Jackson may be the King of Pop, but Jeff Lynne is the Einstein - the greatest genius pop music has ever seen. If you like it, feel free to use it. I feel he's important enough to deserve some evangelists, given how apparently under-appreciated he his (as someone else here has pointed out, only recently inducted into the songwriters hall of fame - on the 5th ballot?!?) Even aside from his amazing and prolific songwriting, great for all the reasons you listed, his production work with ELO and others was astoundingly innovative, foreshadowing many aspects of modern music that are taken for granted.

There's a 2001 live performance of "Turn to Stone" and when Lynne gets to the speed chorus he nails it, the camera zooms right on on his face afterwards, and he's got the *biggest* grin like "yeah I still got it."

I believe that Jeff Lynne described that album as a bad dream that a banker type of guy had. I like that way of looking at it. I also like to think of it as a chance to indulge in the idea of going back in time to find lost love. Then you realize that it will be okay. That is what the song Hold On Tight is about. Overall, Time is one of ELO's best albums. The best version is the full uncut album. That is the version I like best.

George Carlin did a comedy routine about that. "You ever seen a dog just standing there? He don’t know what he’s waiting for, but if it happens, he’ll be ready. Just a waiting and a waiting, waiting for you to come home. They don’t understand time. A dog doesn’t know the difference between an hour and a half or next week. He thinks you’re going to be gone forever. That’s the only time period dogs really understand, forever."

and Jeff wrote it in 3.5 weeks. Not all about him tho. Kelly Groucut (bass) was responsible for the harmony, Richard Tandy's list of keyboard kit took up a good part of the back cover if I recall reading it aged 15. Bev was a very under-rated drummer who went on to play with Sabbath and when Jeff revived ELO in later years he needed best part of an orchestra to do what Mik and the other two did. All this talent plus Jeff's production which was why he was asked to join Wilbury's.

ELO's "wall of sound" would come on the radio during the 70s, you knew exactly who it was, it would make you stop what you're doing and put you in a good mood. Probably the single best thing many groups in the mid/late 70s did that is missing in today's new music. And to your question, "Shine a Little Love" is right there with Turn to Stone.

Elizabeth ~ I really enjoyed watching you react to ELO's 'Turn to Stone"! They are SO multi-dimensional that you HAVE TO listen to them over and over, just to absorb every little morsel of what's flying past you so quickly. Your musical knowledge and assessments are refreshing....I worked in the rock music industry for 30+ years, and ELO has - imo - never really been given all the credit due them. It is exciting to watch someone with musical knowledge discover something that excites them. Jeff Lynne is an incredible musician, with a wide array of people that he has played with, written for or produced.....the Travelling Wilburys - his band with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty - being the one that comes to mind after ELO. The deeper you dig, the brighter his 'qualifications' sparkle. He is a consummate perfectionist, and as can be seen, the quality of his productions leave little to be desired NOR required. ELO has played Wembley on several occasions, but perhaps 2017 was the finest of all (imo). There is a DVD of it, and youtube has offered selections from that show individually, but not the complete show. I'll post some of my go-to's for my 'happy music' moods, and hope that you'll see them (and that youtube lets me post them). I wish I could watch you watch these selections for the first time, just to witness your excitement and giddiness, which I know will be inevitable. The stage production is quite elaborate, but the quality of the music & the musicians keeps it from being the main focal point. One of the background singers is Melanie McDonald-Lewis, a woman you may already be familiar with. She adds SO much extra 'dimension' to their sound. And her husband is the lead guitarist (electric) who looks so happy! The lead violinist is Rosie Langley.....a virtuoso with seemingly no limitations, and her sister Amy is one of the lead cellists. I feel like I'm going to spoil all the excitement for you if I keep 'splainin everything, but a wiki search can fill in all the gaps. Enjoy ! Maybe I'll get to see your reactions to these songs. If not, maybe you can reply to my comment here . . . . . She shared that the feeling of being paralyzed by grief while the world rushes by - a whirlwind of activity you can't latch onto. She was longing for his return and kept feeling his presence in empty rooms (chilling to me). Once I listened from that perspective, I can't forget her torment whenever I hear this song.

@Gerry McGuire Recently a good friend and coworker of mine lost his wife in a car accident, they just started their family with twin boys less than 2 years old at the time of her tragic death. Immediately upon watching this I was filled with tears thinking of him. When I listened to this song in the late 70's I never payed attention to the lyrics and thought of it as a fun song, those days are over now.

The pace and rhythm of this song is like a gallop - like someone up on a horse riding hard from town to town in search of their loved one, yearning for them and can't wait to see them again. The chorus is like slowing down to take a closer look, to search the crowds. Edit: On that note, you asked about our "favorite song" on the album. For me, it's "Wild West Hero"... so downright funky, but it's also about living our dreams, finding happiness and meaning in our life. It's really inspiring and has some very amazing vocals - an amazing mix and range - including an a capella portion.

While it is not as consistently great as New World Record (IMHO), there are so many great tracks on this album. I'm most partial to the five songs that start with Stepping Out, followed by their "Concerto for a Rainy Day" which includes Standing in the Rain, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning, and Mr. Blue Sky. So emotionally satisfying. Still gives me chills 46 years after first hearing it.

I agree that "A New World Record" is ELO's most consistently great album, and agree on "Concerto for a Rainy Day" as a highlight of "Out of the Blue". For an "upbeat" sounding song from "Out of the Blue," the single "Sweet Talkin' Woman" is a good one, though as with "Turn to Stone" the lyrics are also not that upbeat.

100% My suggestion for one more song to cover would be Standing in the Rain, although, to be honest, this album is close to perfection (in my opinion) so she could choose anything and it would be a great choice - however, Standing in the Rain is a perfect contrast to Mr. Blue Sky, seems like a great way to wrap up coverage of the album.

From this album definitely the whole "Concerto for a rainy day" even if you have listened to the biggest hit Mr Blue Sky already. It's a full set of intertwining four songs. Jeff hasn't been the most cheerful composer of upbeat songs (apart from a handful of 50's style rock'n'roll tracks like Do Ya, Beethoven, Don't bring me down) but instead a fantastic writer and singer of sad, melancholic songs of loneliness and longing. I recommend a couple of earlier masterpieces as well if you enjoy the sad parts as well: Eldorado + Finale (1974), Dreaming of 4000 (1973) and 10358 Overture (1971 and the first ever song done by ELO, they still perform this song live!).

Jeff Lynne is a fan of the concept album. Meaning that the album as a whole builds on a theme and tells a story. Several of his albums do this with Secret Messages being about a man transported to the future. Eldorado is an album based on legends and fantasy around a dream of the City of Eldorado. It goes on. Also many songs transition from one song to the next so they connect together really well.

"Sweet Talkin' Woman" was another single, but I really liked the interplay and cadence of Jeff's vocals with the multitracked chorus (which I think is also him) on "Sweet is the Night." The whole Concerto for a Rainy Day side is tip-top (they kicked off the sets of their last tours with "Standin' in the Rain"), but my sentimental childhood favorite is "Jungle." So fun, and a lovely sentiment -- "Wonderous is our great blue ship that sails around the mighty sun and joy to everyone that rides along."

Well, in order to facilitate you listening to the rest of this great album as fast as possible, if you want one more ‘Out of the Blue’ song recommendation, I’d go with Jungle! It’s another very upbeat number, and my personal absolute favourite ELO song ever. I’m biased though - I can remember bouncing around the kitchen to it when I was very small as my Dad was doing the dishes 😂 For ELO’s wider catalogue, I’ll throw out some potential curveballs - ‘Eldorado’ has possibly the most dramatic vocal performance Jeff Lynne has ever done, I’ve seen people recommend ‘Rockaria’ and I can second that - it’s a fun and unique track that could technically be called a rock opera and anything off Time would be a treat but I’d put in for ‘The Bouncer’, a bonus track that finishes with some bombast and swing! But irregardless of what you choose, ELO reactions are always a treat and with Out of the Blue you can’t go wrong, a double-album of golden tracks - thanks for the analysis of its stunning opener and I can’t wait for the next one!
