The first authoritative assessment of Mario Buatta by a protégée of the decorator. Never-before-seen archival material is culled to present the design master as someone who remains impactful in today’s world of maximalist interiors.
This book presents the design tricks and decorative life of Mario Buatta (1935-2018), one of America’s most famous interior decorators. Drawing upon Buatta’s vast archives and revealing the foundations of his work, which include hundreds of presentation boards, more than eighty scrapbooks chronicling his career, and correspondence with clients and such design notables as John Fowler and Sister Parish, Anatomy of a Decorator illuminates the designer’s work with a focus on influences, process, and evolution. His very last projects, not included in Rizzoli’s comprehensive book on the decorator in 2013, are evaluated and provide readers a masterclass in decorating à la Buatta. Ribbons, needlepoint, fine English and American antiques, floral chintzes, blue-and-white porcelains, lacquerware, botanicals, vibrant color combinations, and whimsy abound.
Chapters include a close look at the important figures who guided his trajectory, including Nancy Lancaster, Rose Cumming, Keith Irvine, and Albert Hadley; an assessment of how the designer catapulted from Staten Island without a college degree to become a household name; and a breakdown of Buatta’s design vocabulary and how-tos. This book is an essential addition to the libraries of design aficionados.

Mario Buatta is my very favorite decorator. When my son asked what I wanted for a Christmas present, without hesitation I asked for Mario's book. I am in love with every page. I have used so many of his ideas. It is near impossible to find the bows anymore. Thank you for this presentation.

Thank you for sharing the books you do, your presentations very often compel me to purchase them. This particular book is one I had preordered because like you, Mario Buatta was the main decorator who got me interested in interior design. Several decades ago I was in line at a super market here in Southern California and picked up a magazine to flip through as I waited my turn at the checkout stand. I was immediately drawn to the pages devoted to Mr Buatta's apartment. The colors, the fabrics and the sense of whimsy were paramount in my appreciation for what I was seeing. A few years later I had the opportunity to have lunch with him at a Bullock's here in Southern California. At the time he wasn't well known in this area and only about six people showed up so we were all so lucky to get to enjoy one on one conversations with him. He was very charming, kind and witty ... he began speaking with an English accent and we all fell for it but he soon allowed us to know he was only kidding. Due to the traditional English country house style look never really going out of style, I have enjoyed his interpretation of this look in all three houses I've lived in as an adult. In my seventies now and never tiring of the happy feel his ideas have brought. Nancy Lancaster, John Fowler and Sister Parish are also favorites but none of them compare to the appreciation I have for Mr. Buatta. I'm so thankful to Emily Evans Eerdmans for putting out this book and for you bringing it the attention of more people. Thank you again for covering this and other decorator/gardening books, you do a really great job.

I am indeed jealous of your very personal lunch that you were able to have the Mr. Buatta. That is quite a memory to share. I have heard that he was a kind man, but expected a lot from his assistants. Emily Evans Eerdmans not only rose to the occasion but excelled at this positions, when many others did not. I do appreciate her work and her personal memories of him. I actually cried at one point while reading this book. I very much appreciate your comment. Thank you!

@@thetartantopiary My copy arrived about a week ago and I've been holding off reading it, hoping to be able to sit down and thoroughly enjoy it without any distractions. On reading your reply stating that you were moved to tears at one point I am prompted to tie up the ends to a project I am working on even sooner so I can crack it open. I purchased some white chocolate to have with my tea just for the occasion. Again, thank you so much for bringing these books to life each week, I always look forward to them.

Good morning Mary, this was so enjoyable, thank you. Mr Buatta's lush intertiors draw one in, to examine every detail, and when you think you have done that, you can start over and see what you missed. Yes, English country, but without the shabbiness that comes from true country life collected over generations, and with the New World's bright, clean perfection. Gorgeous to watch, once again. Blessings to you and your family Mary.

That is a beautiful book review this week, I love chintz myself and English classic design being a British transplant since 1975, brought my country traditional style with me for all these years. This designer seemed a very complex character with a sense of humor. I must say I would have liked to have had him decorate my home. What a lovely garden walk today, the facade of the building with the brick and the walled garden with the cherub statuary remind me of my catholic boarding school days 20 miles outside of Brussels so many years ago. Sweet poem to go with the walk. Have a wonderful week until the next video. Blessings for the start of fall.
