And don't forget that the more models you field, the more you benefit from "platoon effect", which is when you see the models as a team that's all uniformly painted instead of a single, sad, quickly painted mini.

You're right about the different facings' colours, f.e. New Yorkers had buff ones. The hunting shirts were very popular in the continental army, whole units, expecially riflemen, were equipped with them, the last mini is surely from one of these, given the lack of a bayonet. These minis, as usual, are really well painted, it's incredible how the infantryman remember an early french revolutionary soldier.

It's crazy how old some Perry miniatures sculpts are and yet, for my money, they haven't been bested. Maybe it's just because I like the true scale more than heroic, but they also just have such lovely details, poses, and faces.

As someone who used to study this stuff professionally, uniformity of Continental troops really depended on the year, the unit, and the theatre. Some troops were very well equipped and others weren't--some southern colonies, for example, could not adequately outfit their troops during the fall and winter months, whereas mid-Atlantic and New England colonies had more success with uniformity. Pennsylvania Line soldiers also were typically (not always) well uniformed (though you get the odd new recruits or British deserters who were pressed into service without proper continentals--the coats with the different facings). After the 1779 reforms, you do tend to see greater uniformity as well as supplies from France started to trickle in more steadily. Prior to this, quite a few bolts of fabric were taken off in a raid by Loyalist troops during the winter of 1777-1778 outside Philadelphia (some of this cloth was meant to refit soldiers at Valley Forge). Of course militia, Associators, and Flying Camps were different beasts entirely. With the exception of Flying Camps, uniformity amongst these units was rare and also widely depended upon the colony and location at the time. Deserter reports offer some clues but these aren't always reliable on the whole (however sometimes you get four or five deserters from the same unit in the same listing at the same time that give clues to the kit of the regiment as a whole). Thanks for coming to my TED talk. Anyway, fun video as always!

I'm still very much a newcomer to the era, let's say. Spent a few days making sure that at least nothing's egregiously wrong! 😅 The Perry Miniatures boxes always come with the most specific painting guides, but the sheet in the Continental infantry one is pretty crazy, there's seven pages of colour examples. Makes a nice change of pace! If you've got any suggestions for good sources to turn to for someone dipping their toe into the water, I'd be dead curious.

#2's uniform looks surprisingly camouflaged. Those Perry minis are wonderfully naturalistic. Silver Bayonet during the War of Independence could make for a nice variant setting.

With some colours it can really work, but at 15mm they're usually quite strong. A little of the medium might help to have more of the primer showing through?

Hi @Sonic. After watching one of your videos a few months ago, I went out as a beginner and bought a lot of contrast colors. Then I started coloring my Napoleonic figures using the exact method you showed here and in the other "Painting with Contrast Colors" videos. Well...didn't go so well... 😀 Unfortunately, I often fail when drybrushing with white over the "Aly's" (I copied the recipe exactly) or preshading Seraphin. I usually use too much paint or I press too hard. This smudges the details. Was wondering if I was too stupid for this. I also never got the contrast colors right, mostly too dark (because I used too much paint or painted over the same spot more often) or too unevenly. Apart from my inability, it is probably also because I work with 1:72 figures, which are significantly smaller than the 28mm figures and the details are often not as pronounced, depending on the manufacturer of the figures. Well, I keep practicing. Maybe it's because of the size of the figures or I'm more of the painter who gets along better with the classic method and "classic" colors of Vallejo. Let's see, I keep practicing. I just wanted to share my experiences. Anyways, thank you very much for your content. 😀
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio Жыл бұрын
1/72 figures can be a little tricky since - at least in my experience - they tend to be sculpted and cast in a slightly different style to their larger and smaller cousins. Detail isn't ordinarily as pronounced, which ordinarily means the Contrast-style effect doesn't work as prominently. They still make good base coats, though; you might try working from a white primer without the pre-shade I've used on the larger figures, and then highlight the Contrast stuff traditionally.

I quite like them. Sonic, out of curiosity: you often discuss how models painted like these would "look on the table", and I have to wonder... which games with massed armies do you play? I imagine not for every game and period, because you simply wouldn't have the time to paint armies for all of them! So which ones do you play? :)
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 2 жыл бұрын
I wish I had the *space* for more, that's the tricky part! But as far as stuff I've got painted to 'army' size - without tying to game system - I've got Crimson Fists, Iron Hands, a pretty decent chunk of Imperial Guard, then at least understrength company sized forces for WWII gaming of US Army, British Airborne, German Heer and 2NZ Division. Otherwise I've got a *bunch* of small skirmish groups, gangs and such for different games and settings, but armies? It's really just those.

There's not much to choose between Seraphim Sepia or Agrax Earthshade, honestly. It's up to how warm you want them to look. Myself, I'd probably use the Agrax, but it's much of a much once you get all the colour on.
