You can tell carpenter ants by the nest. If you see a bunch of empty beer cans and half smoked roaches outside the nest then you got carpenter ants.

Technically, it is a hard wood, but it is a fast growing deciduous so it is not a a strong wood and not long lived like you said. They are a primary successional species.
