As a former pantser (now I call myself a story quilter), I've never paid a lot of attention to plotting tools, but there are some beats I have internalized, that I really like to lean into as I revise and tighten a manuscript. Once I have a book to play around with, plotting tools can be very handy for analyzing and assessing where the holes are, or if I've put a scene in the wrong place. My new favourite is the plot embryo, and it turns out, all my old favourite elements map onto it perfectly.
In this video, I mention Rachael Stephen's video, based on Dan Harmon's plot embryo concept, and her video is here: • my favourite novel plo...

I really appreciate that you applied a romance plot to the plot embryo! Thank you!

Very helpful, thank you!! I’m new to the romance genre and I feel like I’m really getting a better feel for the story now

I've been using this method recently too. Love that it allows me to put all the internalised story structure in my head down on paper in a visual way that doesn't involve more than my usual stepping stone approach to plotting, cause really I'm still a total pantser at heart.

I think this is the key for me, that it's not anything more than I would otherwise do, it's just organized in a different fashion--and one that works for my brain.

omg I love this so much! It fits in perfectly with how I (a pantser who really wants to plot more) think of story but just can't articulate it in my head. Thank you, Zoe!

We are twins in this regard!!! The other thing I like about it is that it takes zero time at all to sketch out when I'm stuck and want to remind myself about possible next moves. That's a legit pantser writing technique right there!

I love this because I write in chunks using Scrivener! Lining up my "chunks" is hard but this will simplify the process!

I’m so obsessed with plot even though I struggle to use it. Super interesting approach

I am mostly a pantser. I make key plot points I want to hit, but fill the in-between parts with unplanned scenes etc. But aside from one of my past books, I have to write in order. Sometimes it can be a little slower and sometimes the characters take me in their own direction and I have to rewrite the plot points. Sometimes I don't even know what the ending will be aside from being HEA (sometimes HFN)!

I REALLY enjoyed this video. I'm a pantser that loves the 'idea' of plotting, but I'm really more interested in character development. The concept of growing full circle from ignorant bliss to enlightenment is brilliant. I'll definitely be checking out more on this concept. Thanks!

I worked on a story circle for a new book today! It remains my new favourite tool. Happy researching!

Yeah, scenes ... but not always fully fleshed out, sometimes it's just a few lines of dialogue.

NOTE: This has ZERO to do with the popular Story Circle of Dan Harmon, but rather describes her own plotting method mapped onto a, well, circle :)
