Since Deafheaven's crown jewel record Sunbather released in 2013, and projects like Alcest and Harakiri for the Sky took over the mainstream metal light, Blackgaze has been a polarizing and downright controversial term. Where does the history of this expansive take on black metal lie, and what led to its decline? What is the major differences between blackgaze and atmospheric black metal? In this genre rough guide, I talk about just that!

Culturally and musically, blackgaze is a fascinating point in metal and black metal that showcased a rapid shift in the dynamics of black metal, how far it could go and why experimentation can both propel something to the forefront of metal, but also why a decline can oftentimes result just as soon as the hype appears. What're your thoughts of blackgaze?! Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 Other genre/topic rough guides! blackgaze to me fits in perfectly with some DSBM on a playlist, so that's mainly when I listen to it. Sylvaine is another great project, that has definitely been more gaze than black these days, but I still love their music. i need more Alcest and Deafheaven CDs

Thank you for talking about music like this, just a small criticism: please do some more research when talking about these bands. Alcest existed almost a decade prior to Deafheaven, with the blackgaz-y- sound starting around 2005. Of course, they got more popular outside of the French and European scene in the early 2010s, but directly comparing them to Deafheaven, who just got started in 2010 is a bit ignorant. Deafheaven's vocalist George Clarke himself cites the work of Alcest as "the blueprint" for the band's musical direction.Alcest were initially not met with so much outrage from tru kult gatekeepers because Neige of Alcest had been in other BM bands considered "authentic". I love both bands, but they have a really different approach, Deafheaven did their own spin on the blueprint.

Ofc ! I was aware but didn't want the video to me overly long and mostly mentioned them lumped due to being the two bands that most people knew at the time! If anything, I could've spoken more of Wolves in the Throne Room LMAO I always want to make these like an hour long but have to pace myself 😭 tysm for the support and cheers!

Ahh, I should have read your comment before I did my own stating pretty much exactly the same thing. I got into Alcest not long before their debut, 'Souvenirs...', dropped, and I remember Neige explicitly stating that their music was a hybrid of black metal and shoegaze. I also remember Deafheaven stating that they were directly influenced by Alcest. From my memory, the second blackgaze band, or at least the second one to gain any traction, was Heretoir.

Blackgaze was killed by blackgaze artists. Alcest and Sylvaine got big, then tried to be more gaze than black, but us fans didn't follow along. I'll never forget seeing Alcest play in a dingy little bar in Toronto years ago, though. That was a great night.

Can agree with it. I'd lump deafheaven in as well, considering they left a lot of their black metal in the past

I have never heard of this genre or well sub before.. thanks for listing a few bands included in this so I can take a gander. I actually listened to Hulder's new album last week... it was okay.

Hmm... Alcest didn't take what Deafheaven did and put their own spin on it; Alcest were *the first* blackgaze band who were making this music long before Deafheaven's debut. I was following Alcest from 2007, and by the time 'Sunbather' had dropped, Alcest had already released 3 full-length albums along with a demo, including a re-recorded version, as well as EPs, etc. Neige himself said back in those early days that Alcest was a fusion of black metal and shoegaze, and I believe I first heard the portmanteau of 'blackgaze' used after their second album, 'Écailles de lune', dropped in 2010 (though Google Trends shows that the term was first searched for in late 2011). The first band that I know to take direct influence from Alcest in those early years was Heretoir. They were the second blackgaze band to get big, and potentially the second ever band to incorporate that sound, from what I can remember... It's a shame that people think blackgaze was created with 'Sunbather' when Alcest, the OGs, were making this style years before. I'm pretty sure you'll find interviews from the 'Sunbather' days where Deafheaven say that they were influenced by Alcest, not the other way around. Anyway, regardless of this, I enjoy your content! EDIT: BTW, you mentioned Alcest not releasing music as good as their earlier stuff. You should check out their new album that dropped a few weeks back, 'Les chants de l'aurore'. It's amazing... One of their best, IMO. A return to their earlier ethereal and uplifting (yet bittersweet) sound. :)

PBM is still very special to me to this day. Labels I follow, musicians with multiple projects. The expansiveness of certain bands sounds. Sáasil (ephemeral). PBM supergroup. Incredible record. Ser (In the fade of memories). Agriculture (Agriculture) (hyper aggressive shit) Sorrow Plagues (Homecoming). This one in particular I'm sad has next to no one paying attention. The project long since disbanded, taking PBM and shred guitar and putting them together. Incredible album. Oculi Melancholiarum (Alud) Nox Victoria's work is amazing. Germ (Grief) abit more on the DSBM side? But it's odd and experimental enough to be under the PBM label Déhà (can't decide) one man self named project from Belgium. He does more than just PBM but it's his main shtick. Was obsessed with his music for over a year.

First off thank you for introducing me to black gaze and specifically Sunbather. That album is just *chefs kiss* I’ve always had a love hate relationship with the amount of sub genres in metal. On one hand it makes it’s real easy to find the right band to scratch that particular itch. On the other it creates so much infighting about which sub genre, of a sub genre, of a sub genre, of a sub genre is better

My friend recently pointed out to me that in RnB, pop and other music genres most of the time there are gonna be a few different genres in a single album. Meanwhile in metal most of the time an album has to have a certain specific 'sound'. If the artist wants to write different music it's gonna have to be in a different album (e.g. Strapping Young Lads vs Ocean Machine). And then when a new band/album sounds 'too' different an entirely new subgenre splinters off. She thought it was really limiting, I'm undecided. Because on one hand yeah there's less diversity in a single album/band. On the other hand new subgenre a buncha other bands get on a trend and we end up with a variety of different bands following that sound down the rabbithole, sometimes polishing/perfecting it further. Anyway yeah the subgenre thing in metal is kinda wild lol. There are way too many. But I guess it can also be helpful

I don't think actually blackgaze was in the mainstream, I don't think any black metal bands can top today the most mainstream ones (Dimmu Borgir , Cradle Of Filth , Behemoth, Watain )

Wth is up with your hair? You can’t have many people that love you if no one stopped you from going out like that. Don’t take this as hate, this is something your loved ones should’ve let you know.

Unfortunately had a friend that had given me a haircut and fucked it up, trust me not fond of it. In a perfect world it'd be much longer and styled differently but a lot of it comes down to just making my content and dealing with it. I rarely enjoy my appearance on the channel due to looking very different off camera so I suppose I worry less about that sort of thing because I know even if I look good in the eyes of the viewers it'll not mean much considering it wouldn't be how I personally would like to look. Long answer for a short question but yeah, mostly a friend being more confident than they should've been about giving haircuts lmao
