so why did the keep shrink to a small tower between 1543 and 1562 ?

There was a minor fire safety incident with the gun powder stored at the keep :D After that, the tower was rebuilt with significant royal financial aid in a simpler form, more fitting to withstand cannon fire.

@@danielguzmics268 Thanks for the clarification! Minor incident sounds like it completely blew up. It is very interesting to see the evolution of the castle compound like you show it. I would love to know how exactly this was done. I suppose a lot of old maps came to use.. must have been plenty of work to do all the research, too.

@@sturm3d In 1562, the gunpowder stored in the old tower of the castle exploded as a result of a lightning strike. A huge explosion destroyed the medieval residential tower and part of the inner castle. Afterwards the tower and the castle walls were rebuilt according to the requirements of fight with firearms into a large bastion. The reconstruction work was a very sophisticated procedure, digital scans, all kinds of surveys and historical data including archaeological research data were used to create the theoretical reconstruction models.
