Holy shit I was born while this game aired live. Born in Oakland though.

I wasn't born at that time, but it amazes me how popular baseball was back in the day, I mean they literally had multiple networks broadcasting games every week, nowadays the best game of the week is broadcast on cable networks like ESPN. As a huge baseball fan, it would be amazing being around in those times.

NBC's Game of the week was always a treat watching after you've done all your homework. 😄 ABC's Monday Night Baseball were like the guests your parents invited over for dinner but you had to go to bed because school was tomorrow.

@@SuperLandho I grew up in Oakland. NBC's coverage began in the mornings while we finished breakfast and did our weekend chores. Then, a locally broadcast game which would start around 1pm if the A's or Giants were at home (and we didn't attend in person) or mid-to-late afternoon if it was an away game in Texas, the Midwest or East Coast. Any ABC Monday Night Baseball or Football was an early to mid-afternoon start and was over by around 8 or 9 at the very latest. During the summers we always watched these games and sometimes taped them on the VCR. Years later I moved to Atlanta and was pissed that the West Coast games, if they were shown at all, were on too late for me to watch and still get enough sleep to go to work the next morning.

It was also the debut of Tony LaRussa as manager of the Oakland A's just weeks after being fired as manager of the Chicago White Sox. LaRussa's A's defeated the Red Sox when they played of the American League pennant in 4 game sweeps in 1988 and 1990.

A lot of muscle in the middle of that Red Sox lineup.

This was the changing of the guard for the Oakland A's. Bruce Boche Dave Kingman Dwayne Murphy. Then debuted Jose Canseco, Mark McGuire

Yup! Dave Stewart. Eck would come the next year

Also it was LaRussa's first game as a manager for Oakland. Also they played some pretty good baseball for the rest of the reason they went 45-34 from this game forward.

Watching this as a 10 year old, mind was blown that Clemens got his ass kicked by the A's. For years I was always intrigued by this game and the importance of it for the A's franchise and it was really hard to find online. Thank you for posting this

I was in Vegas that night for a bowling tournament at the old Showboat. As an A’s fan, the two reasons I remember it so well were, it was Tony LaRussa’s debut as their manager and because it was the first time I ever saw a baseball game where the favorite priced at over $3.00.

Oakland had a much better and deeper lineup than the Red Sox during most of those years.
