Tim I paused at 4.00 because you carefully explained why more professional mariners do not post. I am extremely grateful for you and more grateful for your employer who allows you to present a line of work I have always been fascinated by. I grew up around a location where numerous tugboats worked and climbing aboard to experience what they do just does not exist on KZfaq. Thank you and your employer for filling an interest gap. Happy New Year.

His employer? I assumed he owned the boat…?
@henrymp6295

@@GrifFungin No sir, he works for a company that tolerates his postings. The gist of the message Tim is asking is for viewers to respect the anonymity of his employer so he can continue to offer his productions. If I owned a towboat company, Tim would be a first choice to captain any boats in the fleet. If I had a need of a towboat, Tim's employer would be my first choice because of the tolerance. You can search KZfaq and will not find these types of videos anywhere but here. Several creators have tried, but Tim posts on a regular basis. If you want to see another pro who has latitude with their employer, check out TheCrewChef, who is the executive chef on a charter yacht. Warning, you will be in the galley and not on the helm.😀 However, she is a cutie. 👍 (Sorry Tim).

Tim you probably will never see this but I want to write this anyway. I have NO experience as a commercial mariner....I DID get my "6-pack" license in 1984 and owned boats for 35 years. I love your channel. I grew up on the Elizabeth,NJ and Carteret,NJ waterfronts . I worked on the docks and worked with gasoline barges. I just want to thank you for a great channel. It was either 45 or 46 years ago, as an Apprentice Mate, I left that dock (or one nearby), my first winter of a career at sea. I had one of the coldest night cargo watches ever and I still remember the sound of the ice cakes going by in the river to this day. Now a (retired) Master Mariner and pilot, this took me back to memories of days long gone. Thanks for the memories and Happy New Year.

Cavitation is a fascinating subject with serious physics behind it. I am a hydraulics engineer, and have seen valves and piping eroded away from the inside from the energy created by the tiny bubbles collapsing. There is another interesting phenomenon called “sono-luminescence” where when the bubbles collapse, they give off a purplish glow. Have some colleagues who ran an experiment showing this with a hydraulic circuit in a Lexan body and the glow is visible. I think they put the video on KZfaq somewhere. They brag about creating their hydraulic lightbulb. Really enjoy everything you share with us. Happy Holidays

Frequent watcher, first time commenter here. Tim, I just wanted to take a second to say how much I appreciate you and your work on this channel. I have a small (to you) 35 foot twin engine vessel I keep on Lake Michigan. I have found the way you talk through your thought processes as you are underway, give helpful tips on VHF etiquette, explain how little guys can stay out of the big guys way SO INCREDIBLY useful. Not to mention all of the tips you give on handling in tight quarters (without having to scream at any of your crew--which my wife has come to appreciate) as, really, although the stakes are bigger for you--the forces on the boat remain largely the same. Thank you for doing what you do. Keep it up and maybe we'll catch up to you out there somewhere. :)

Happy New Year Captain Tim & Crew. Probably the best description of cavitation, steam entropy & enthalpy I have ever heard. Something that is made to sound very complicated by engineers, you broke it down to the real nuts and bolts of the science! As usual you make it enjoyable for us all.........Regards Tim, from a retired refinery employee from Port Reading..............

Thanks for the video! Brought back some good memories from the west coast, South Bay of San Diego and the Portages chatter on the tug radio. It was a great life for a young man working on the water back in the 70’s. Here’s happiness to in the new year!

Appreciate that you share your profession and explaining your reasoning behind things. We're always asked to put ourselves in other's shoes to have empathy, but that's neigh impossible without transparency and a fuller understanding of the conditions they're operating under. You're a prime example of what we need more of!

I worked as a musician aboard an RCCL ship Jewel of the Seas in 2005. When we docked at Georgetown, Bermuda, the captain had to navigate between two jetties and then turn around. Anyway, in the turnaround process the cap turned that boat 962 feet long between those jetties with no more than 50 feet clearance fore and aft. That was massively impressive. Guys holding laser rangefinders on the bow & stern. Ship had azipods, not regular propeller(s), and of course bow thrusters. I always wondered if the nav system had some kind of turn-in-place routine they could call up to spin the boat on a dime. They did this a lot, but never more dramatic than Bermuda. They never wanted to back out of a port on departure.
