When starting with midtones, it's basically 'painting in the light' after. It's what traditional painting teaches and is easier to understand for some, like myself.

Sinix, can you make a video about painting away lineart? There's not many videos about it on youtube, and it's the part I'm struggling the most when it comes to painting.
@UltraInstinctYiik
@UltraInstinctYiik 7 жыл бұрын
What i do for painting into lineart is merge all the layers on a piece (base, shadow, lineart, etc...), then naturally incorporate the lines into the painting as thin shadows, or if the background permits it, remove the lineart by replacing it with more of whatever color(s) is near it. Bad description, i know, but think of the lines as the end of the curved surface that you're looking at and imagine how the light might affect how that surface looks while it is perpendicular to you.

what I do is do the lineart then put in the colors in a layer under it, then color the lineart to a color similar to the layer/s below, copy the lineart (just in case you mess it up) then merge it with the color and paint away!

Good tutorial. If you want realism, add light and shadow, but then learn and add ambient occlusion, bloom effect, bounce lighting, atmosphere, translucency, etc. Actually, even if you don't do realism, it's incredibly useful to know these, because you can mix and match these effects with any style to transform ordinary into extraordinary!

If I can overstep and reply to this. It is the general darkness around the edge of forms when they meet a surface. Or bloom effect is a way to expose an image to a glowy sort of effect. So the highest highlights gets blown out first and then the rest.

So wonderful and lovely to see different techniques broken down...I feel like it's not as intimidating as I once thought it was before, both cell shading and your midtone approach. After seeing so many of your videos, I've become so inspired again and want to really engage and be serious about improvement. Thanks for everything!

That was one of the most useful drawing instructional things in any medium. I have so much trouble adding color and, despite noticing different light sources adding different tones, I just screw up trying to get it down. Probably because I didn't treat them both as light sources but definitely because I'm usually working from a light tone down rather than a midtone out. Love your stuff dude.

It's so easy to focus on shadows; like when studying an egg or one of those white basic shapes or statue busts for artist to reference. Maybe because the shadow stands out so much on white objects such as those, it may cause one to focus on those shadow areas. Then translate that to the white canvas. Also, as you mentioned, the cel-shaded look may be something many of us are use to seeing because of tv/internet. I'm gonna try this shift in focus on some of my current work. Thanks for the video!

If you follow Sycra you would know that he knows that alot of folk dont like TSPP he addressed it and simply said dont watch it if you dont like it so I dont watch it. He's allowed to be introspective and do a series on his art issues or wtv its supposed to be about but it does feel like a case of bait and switch. Imagine if you subbed to Sinix for art tutorials and suddenly he starts reviewing weird products from Amazon. Id say it'd be somewhat accurate to say that the channel went downhill if something like that happens. Pretty much the same thing if you subscribe for art tutorials and speedpaints and then get nothing but 2hour plus babblings

I'll watch the TSPP when I get time because it may have useful info but even the livestreams had some paintings going on, sometimes Bobmeatbag drew and Sycra talked for hours which I still found lots better than the current format of TSPP. I really miss seeing Sycra's style though.

Only partway through but I love this, I learn so much from people doing something and then explaining what I'm seeing. Here, instead of just saying "try painting without shadows, it works", you demonstrated how to use a correct skin midtone and then how using two light sources works effectively. Even before you added the tiny shadow detail it worked. Do you have a patreon? (On mobile so apologies if it's obvious in description; never mind, just got to the end of the video, will support!), you're a great teacher and I learn a lot from you; I'd like to support that and allow you to be able to go more in depth in other topics. For example, you've a great mastery of edge work, and already spoke twice about how you blend. But, I still struggle with finding and properly using hard edges, I blend too much and if I just use hard edges or try to bring hard edges back in, it looks unfinished and unblended

There as always been this discussion in the history of art if I remember correctly. The byzantines worked their mosaics using lighting instead of shading and that tecnique went on for a long time in Italy. Not sure if Giotto used it or not. Hey this might be really dumb but I have a question about the secondary light, I've never really seen it used so like, is secondary light present in most situations that I'm drawing? Is secondary light always some kind of different color? Or can it be the same color as your primary light? Is there anyway to make the midtone look less like a shadow? It looked a lot less shadowy when sinix rendered it out
@evebroadbent7125
@evebroadbent7125 7 жыл бұрын
Mad if you're not seeing a harsh shadow then there's more than one light source. And secondary light source can be any colour, so it is not always a different colour.
@tee6724
@tee6724 7 жыл бұрын
It's not dumb at all! Secondary light is any color. Imagine that you're in a room with the light on, but the sunlight is also coming in through the window - you now have two light sources, approximately the same color. Try this exercise: Look at photos (selfies, photos with friends, photos of people in a strip club - doesn't matter) and determine the light source. First step is to list your light sources, once you've found them. Oftentimes, you'll find more than one. Even if there is only one strong dominating light source (unlikely unless if it is purposefully shot in an environment with one sole light source), you'll find that there is still "reflected light" on the subject. Second step of the exercise: you want to circle/make note of where you're seeing the reflected light and how it interacts with the subject. You'll understand lighting much better this way and see how these details can so easily be classified as "light and shadow". One simple place to see reflected light is on the under side of people's noses. You'll usually see the "reflected light" off of their t-shirt and sometimes have a very soft reflection of green or whatever color it is. :)
@FantasticSpam
@FantasticSpam 7 жыл бұрын
Tee Kay put it perfectly, light ends up bouncing around and ends up hitting objects from many angles, explaining the ambient lighting and mid tones in the video. Depending the strength of the source it might be more direct and become primary and secondary light sources. The color can vary from the source itself or what the light is bouncing off of. A good book on this to pick up if you ever get the chance is Color and Light by James Gourney. It goes over all of this and how to apply it to painting really thoroughly.
@LillenArt2
@LillenArt2 7 жыл бұрын
Light reflects and bounces around. If someone wears a red shirt, even light from the sky can sometimes reflect that color to other places. This is why painters outside often have to be careful of the clothes they are wearing because it can affect what they are seeing.
@rick2962
@rick2962 7 жыл бұрын
It just looks like a shadow in comparison since there is 2 strong lights, also, since almos every part of the body is iluminated, there will be almost no shadows, and the ones that do, are not that strong, think of it like this: the midtone or local tone is afected mostly by the primary light, and the shadow part is afected by the bounced or reflected light, so if there is a lot of light, there will be a lot of reflected light, and that light will be making the shadow lighter than it would be otherwise

Hmm I know this is meant to be a digital technique but I'm wondering how I can apply this to skin tones in watercolors.... without of course going back over with gouache xD maybe having strong saturated areas in yellows and light blues and then going over it with the skin tone, blending certain areas for softer edges. Usually my painting process is very much focused on developing the shadows compared to the light skin tone
@Juhani139
@Juhani139 4 жыл бұрын
That's what makes watercolour so challenging. I've been doing digital for 15± years, took up watercolours 2 years ago. So yeah, I'd say with (pure) watercolour if you want this kind of effect you'd have to plan ahead. Maybe use a scrap piece of paper and mix your skin tones to see if the colours and values you had in mind works with the watercolour biases you are using. As you said, glazing may be an option. In watercolour we usually work from light to dark. In Sinix's video he naturally works from dark to light. I can't see how that would be possible without initial planning and masking (in pure watercolour). But if you're cool with adding gouache or acrylic, that might be able to accommocate this style better.
