In this video I will show you a secret mechanics don't want you to know. On a newer vehicles, like Toyota, Lexus, Subaru, Honda check engine light will cause more lights to come on the dash, like ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, EYESIGHT, HILL ASSIST, PSC, EMISSIONS SYSTEM PROBLEM, TRANSMISSION SYSTEM PROBLEM AND SO ON. This in most cases caused by one fault in the system. I reccomend always checking out check engine light first before diagnosing and spending money on diagnosing other systems. I had DTC P0171 causing all other lights on the Subaru. I used smoke machine to quickly find vacuum leak.

If you study the communication procedures that the vehicles system computers use to talk to each other, it's easy to see why multiple lights go on. They train us in this, SO that we Don't overcharge customers, and only charge to fix the actual problems. Not every mechanic wants to rip you off. Most of us believe in an honest way of making a living.

You are right about an engine code can cause any other light. But been professional also mean to run a full scan on all modules avoiding any come back and not overcharging a customer..

You should definitely change your wordage to most mechanics. Because there is some mechanics out there that will tell the truth and I am one of them

What is the significance of the "i" indicator above the gear lever indicator on the dashboard? I've seen it both in red and yellow. Sometime I see it associated with maybe a low fuel caution light or a seat belt warning light. But again, why would we need that "i" in either red or yellow?

Thank you George! This helped me clear all the indicator lights! My wife wanted to take it to the dealer. I think you just saved us a lot of money. My code was different from yours but clearing the code, cleared all the lights.

I'm sure some mechanics don't want me knowing a lot of things,I'd probably with super glue the inlet duct together or use use polyurethane cement to glue it together. Last week,a P0171 code was triggered by a split O ring on the fuel filler cap,even though my Holden Commodore runs basically the Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine from the Camaro,the P0442 code is irrelevant in Australia since Holden didn't fit a fuel tank pressure sensor !

Theres also some great plastic epoxies that will work great. I would rough up the mating surfaces so the epoxy gets a solid bond.

Good find on the vacuum leak. 👍 The mechanics probably call you because going into one module and not scanning all modules does not tell you the health of the network which may cause the other lights to come on. I don’t know what the drive cycle is for that vehicle but the trip counts have got to be more than one ignition cycle, but I could be wrong.

I saw your video about using a jumper wire in the DLC socket for 30 mins to make Toyota immobilizer accept new PCM...would that trick work with an 05 Acura TSX?! It uses iso9141-2 protocol BTW. My PCM got so corroded that some IC pins disintegrated! The EEPROM appears damaged as well so I won't be able to go that route. That video wasn't accepting comments so that's why im asking here.

It's always disappointing to know that something like a check engine light can run you hundreds of bucks in unnecessary troubleshooting. If it ends up having multiple codes then by all means check out the culprits. I remember in tech school learning about CV joint boot replacement. A simple split boot fix was all that was needed yet we were told that we could charge the customer for removing the axle as if we were putting a one piece boot on it.

So the secret is that by clearing the stored codes using a scan tool, after one ignition cycle, you will have cleared the stored codes. Hmm.

i took my car to a shop with p0171 light turned off while he was doing the test i have no vacuum leaks and he said all the numbers look normal. my check engine light comes on for a couple days the off then back on then off
