Sewing A 1990s Vintage Dress. In this vintage sewing video I sew a 1990s dress using a vintage reproduction sewing pattern. Mcalls sewing pattern M8501. This dress is giving all the summer vibes of 1990's mom aesthetic. This is a sewing pattern for beginners that is marketed as something you can sew in one day! A 3 hour sewing project!

I don't value 90s fashion very high, but I'm from Poland and in the 90s we were just regaining our independence after the iron curtain fell. There was a lot of very corolful mismatching clothses, stiff, high waised jeans, very questionable choices :D Having said that, I really love your dress and I wish this is how I remembered people dressing in the 90s :) It's very classy, but looks very comfy and carefree at the same time. I also like the long form of the video. I really appreciate you being so candid and sharing all of the ups and downs of the sewing process, make up on and off, uplifted and frustrated. This is probably not endorsed by KZfaq's algorithm, but this is what makes your videao real and really relatable. All the best to you! Hope the second dress goes smoother ;)

You know, when I was in college and my work-study job was sewing in the theater's costume shop, we did the vast majority of our sewing on old black Singers. Those ancient machines could only do straight stitches ... but if there was a problem, we could take them apart and fix them ourselves, and they rarely had problems. We had newer machines if we needed more complicated things--sewing on knits, zig-zag, buttonholes, whatever. But the newer machines were more prone to breaking down, and we couldn't fix them ourselves. They don't make sewing machines like they used to!

22:06 👍brave girl. The next pattern is just exciting!! In the 90s, I wore a lot of elastic waistband pants and long vests. I had nothing tucked in -- as opposed to the 80s where I had everything tucked in. I had a few long velvet dresses, but I had even more bib overalls --that I made. I like watching sewing skills level up. One day, you're new and struggling, and suddenly, like literally the next day, not only can you do things, but you're now Frankensteining a pattern. That is quickly followed by you making major alterations, and now you can draft your own. It's crazy. It happened to me, I've seen it happen to others. It's almost like levelling up in a video game. I can't wait for the next pattern!!! It is pretty. I've never seen that one before. I still wonder what they base the sewing time on.

So sorry for your loss:( sewing is definitely my refuge when life feels out of control (one stitch at a time❤️‍🩹 love that-big hugs to you) It looks like you’re sewing with a rayon challis? I LOVE wearing rayon and sew with it often and every time I work with it I curse myself! It can be really frustrating and things like necklines can really stretch out as it’s handled. Here’s my best tips: it does get easier with practice, but one tip I used once for cutting it was to lay tissue paper down underneath, then lay the fabric on it, then pin pattern though all layers and cut through it all together. You can even keep the tissue pinned on as you sew it and tear it away after. Also iron on stay tape and stay stitching in the seam allowance of the neck before you do anything else with the bodice pieces! Honestly way to challenge yourself-it is NOT easy to work with! I bet the next one will be so cute-can’t wait to see it! As for vintage I begrudgingly admit that 90’s is vintage. 😂

As I watch this video, I am working to finish a difficult project that I have spent almost two weeks working on. Like yours, the fabric was incredibly difficult, I had fit issues, and I accidently burnt a hole in the hem (that I stitched three times). I almost threw it away, but I didn't want to quit. I have learned that sewing is definitely a process, and I completed two other projects because I was frustrated. I commend you for seeing it through, despite the struggles. You got this.

Hi Drew, yep, make me feel old girl. I enjoyed the video and I agree, I don't think the dress could be made in 3 hours. That estimation of time cannot have included cutting the fabric etc, it must have been an estimation of just the sewing time - remember how noone could make the walkaway dress between breakfast and lunchtime? However, there was one point where I found myself getting frustrated with you as you were sitting infront of the sewing machine, timeclock running, and chatting! Oh boy, I was so frustrated and kept telling you to keep sewing. Anyway, the dress looks amazing on you and I can't wait to see it remade in a size that fits you. I like the dress so much that I think I may make one for myself. Thanks for a great video.

Well done for persevering and finishing your dress. As I recollect dresses were baggy and we used to wear a crop top or sloppy jumper if the shoulders were loose. I'm trying to remember the shoe styles from the 90s but my memory is a blank which probably means the styles are best left in the past. I do like your YSL heels and what a lovely smile of acheivement at the end. Hope you and your family had an enjoyable 4th July.

Hi Drew - I enjoy watching you strive and learn! Maybe next time instead of counting the time down, count it UP using the stopwatch feature. Then you can just ignore the timer (unless you need to put the pause on it), and focus on the sewing. I’m quite sure that the first time it two that you make something it will take longer than after you get comfortable with it, plus the filming adds time of course. I really wouldn’t sweat the timing too much - especially on your first run through it. I agree with you.. I’d rather take my time and enjoy the process.

First: I guess I’m vintage! lol As for the 3 hour sewing, I think the pattern makers mean that it’s 3 hours to sew, not to cut and prep. That’s my excuse, anyway. 😂 You may want to invest in a rotary cutter and a cutting board. I use mine for viscose crepe or a challis, or a sateen. I find that it makes cutting curves more accurate, especially for collars and such. It depends on your comfort level, though

Wow! I love prints and color, but my reaction to the fabric was 😐... If I remember the 90s I wore layered tshirt type dresses to go dancing... There were blazers with shoulder pads.. high waisted western jeans. I really love the end result! Even the fabric! That fabric looked difficult to fiddle with. I've been avoiding stretchy/drapy fabric and using cotton, but the cottons are so stiff . 😒 Might have to hunt down the pattern when it's on sale. Always check the finished sizing... And it's still a gamble to figure which size to use. That's why I go through the extra effort of putting my pattern pieces onto different paper in order to keep the original in tact if I need other sizes. I have old patterns from my slender days that I can't use because I cut out the size I need from the original. 🤷🏼. That looks like it's going to be comfy in the summer heat. Keep cool sis! 😘💞💝

The dress is very pretty but I think the cutting would be easier if you used a rotary cutter and a mat along with starching the fabric. The rotary cutter and pattern weights and starch all help to not cause the fabric to shift as much. I think if you try it you will definitely see it’s much easier.

Hi Drew. I love the fabric pattern but the wrap over style I didn't like first time around so I won't like it this time around. I forgot to tell you the time but I was only an hour off.

I actually really like this style I kept that dress on all day and it was so comfy especially after wearing 1950s wiggle dress and girdle the day before!

I’m thinking that should fall in that category being it’s about 34 yrs old…antique is suppose to be 100yrs old…lol

Yeah it's strange that they are reproducing 90's patterns when they are still everywhere, and resalers can't move them. My local thrifts are full of them. They just sit. This dress is cute though.

Looks great! The 2nd one you made looks even better because of the fit. Do you think the fabric choices made a difference? Sorry if you answered this already but what was the first fabric? The 2bd one looks like a cotton??
@SewSewDrew
@SewSewDrew Ай бұрын
I went down from a size 18 to a 14 that made a huge difference. The fabric is indeed some 1 dollar a yard cotton which was easier to sew but doesn’t look as elegant as the first. 😊

I don't think it's big on you at all. Some tops, blouses, or even the top of dress to be a little loose. Make it again in a color that pops, maybe a bright pink or purple, or summery print. Otherwise, you look great.

@@SewSewDrew Thanks for not being "judgemental". Well, I am kinda creepy, that is a fact. I remember my aunt and grandma doing Crochet, my Mom when I was young, doing sewing like you. I just think it is so GREAT not to waste things, and we can use that now. That's aside from the fact you are *VERY* beautiful
